Favourite Christmas Films?

What's yours? Feeling ill and sorry for myself today so need cheering up Grin I could watch Christmas Films all day - and every year can't wait until Movies 24 on Sky becomes...Christmas 24!

Mine is: Santa Claus (1985) - it's just amazing and my favourite Christmas movie ever.

Also a fan of Miracle on 34th St, and The Snowman (although not sure it counts as a "film").

Apparently Polar Express is good but I haven't watched it!

YY to loads of these, except Love Actually, which is one of my least favourite films ever.

Can i add Home Alone

I can't go to bed on Christmas Day till I've seen The Snowman and Father Christmas.

BelfastBloke · 10/10/2011 21:03

Thanks KingsRoadie, of course Dinner For One is it. You can tell by the user comments on IMDB that everyone is baffled that it's unknown in Britain, but such a big hit in northern Europe.

Kingsroadie · 10/10/2011 21:03

RedBlanket - Home Alone - completely missed that off my list - LOVE. Fab Christmas film (and the best thing is that it is played throughout the year so not strictly restricted to Christmas)!

LITTLE LORD FAUNTLEROY (1980) with Alec Guiness. It's on the telly in Germany every year at Christmas. Have managed to track it down on youtube. Very christmassy!!!

babydreams · 10/10/2011 21:08

I love christmas films can't wait for them to start on TV
My favourites are:
National Lampoon's christmas vacation
It's a wonderful life
Home alone
Elf
Nativity
A christmas romance
Bad santa

LillianGish · 12/10/2011 17:31

Dinner for One is shown on New Year's Eve - it has become compulsory viewing for us since living in Berlin (we made a recording of it on our last year there so we could watch it every year - "Same Procedure as last year Miss Sophie?" "Same procedure as every year!"). Particularly bizarre that it is shown in English with no sub-titles (it is certainly not silent - absolutely bursting with catchphrases) - impossible to imagine a foreign language film taking such a grip here.

Am I the only one who loves Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas? Grin

Also
White Christmas
The Grinch
It's a Wonderful Life
The Santa Clause

FearfulYank · 12/10/2011 20:23

Ooh I have been keeping a list! Hold please. :)

Home Alone
Meet Me in St Louis for , my favorite Christmas song. :)
the Family Stone
And everything already mentioned!

picnicbasketcase · 12/10/2011 20:31

The Holiday is fun but awful. Pretty crap over the top performances, factually incorrect script (Cary Grant was from Surrey? The people of Bristol would have been surprised to hear that), trying to make Jack Black into a romantic lead etc. And yet.. it's kind of heart warming and christmassy. It's like eating far too many Quality Street. You feel guilty and sick at the end but enjoyed it anyway Grin

Ooh, I love Nightmare Before Christmas too, I'd forgotten that. Somewhere between a Halloween film and an Xmas one.

DandyDan · 14/10/2011 14:57

Meet Me in St Louis
Muppet Christmas Carol
Christmas Carol (Patrick Stewart/Richard E Grant)
It's a Wonderful Life

(we watch The Nightmare Before Christmas at Halloween rather than in December)

WhereYouLeftIt · 14/10/2011 17:09
Kingsroadie · 17/10/2011 14:06

Is it time for the Christmas films yet? Pleeeeeeeease? Grin

OP posts:
mrsm123 · 17/10/2011 14:17

its probably a bit early. mid november acceptable?

having said that "falling in love" was on tcm 2 nights ago which i watched.
its by no means a classic christmas movie but its set in new york at christmas time so you get the feel.

good movie, tear jerker, robert de niro and meryl streep.

Kingsroadie · 17/10/2011 14:38

I know I know... Grin

Was just trying my luck. I am banned until December (same for carols), and tbh I agree. But when my husband is at work, what he doesn't know won't hurt him! Haha.

OP posts:
mrsm123 · 17/10/2011 14:53

i hear you. good idea actually!

love actually was on sky movies at the wkend too, so they are starting to come on and who are we to argue with that?
i dont like love actually but i know its some peoples favourite christmas movie.

Kingsroadie · 17/10/2011 15:38

Ah see I find Love Actually comes under the ChristmassY but not Christmas category, much like Home Alone. So I am allowed to watch those not at Christmas...

OP posts:
Kveta · 17/10/2011 17:13

muppet christmas carol definitely - my wee sister and I watch it together via skype or telephone and sing along together :o

love actually

it's a wonderful life - it's shown at cinemas on christmas eve in some cities - we persuaded mum to book that rather than another bloody panto one year, and haven't seen a panto since, for which i will be eternally grateful!

the flint st nativity is also hilarious

Well done Belfast! So it looks like It's a Wonderful Life is in the lead so far (I DEF need to watch it), followed by The Muppets' Christmas Carol, then Elf and The Snowman.

OP posts:
LordOfTheFlies · 19/10/2011 13:50

Someone on a previous thread voted for "Box of Delights".

I haven't seen it but will look out for it on Amazon.

Nightmare Before Christmas is our Hallowe'en film.DCs watch it -in their Hallowe'en costumes- while eating pizza and Heinz Tomato soup.

BelfastBloke · 18/11/2011 09:50

Just added a couple more, now that it's a more appropriate time to be discussing this. I'm just heading out to the Video shop to buy a few:
