We usually have some party food laid out on the table and we pick at it throughout the evening which is nice but we want a change!

DC don't eat takeaway food otherwise we would have chinese or curry or something. I don't really want to be cooking a big meal on christmas eve so it has to be quite easy and quick to prepare...

Share what you usually have please? :)

hairypotter · 10/09/2011 19:36

Always have a huge Indian takeaway and lots of red wine. Yum

Northernlurker · 10/09/2011 22:47

Roast ham and jacket spuds.

ENormaSnob · 10/09/2011 23:09

Chinese takeaway, few drinks and national lapoons christmas vacation.

Every year Grin

We usually have home made quiches and salad, and home made scone type savoury bread. But, I make the quiches and bread in advance and freeze them. So all I have to do on the day is thaw them out and reheat. A quick and easy (but home-made) meal!

My In Laws have the children for xmas eve afternoon, they make mince pies and have a buffet tea then she takes them to church for the 6pm mass. DP and I clean the house then he cooks ussomething from the freezer, while I prepare all the veg for the next day, we can do this in two hours. Then we sit down with a bottle of wine and wait for mil to bring the kids home. Later we have cocoa and mince pies before bedtime. I should say dd is now 16, so if she doesn't go with mil this year then she can help us with our routine.

We have Christmas eve fondue Smile

startail · 10/09/2011 23:41

I fill the freezer with party bits when ever some on has a good offer. Particularly the Chinese ones, crispy prawns being several our favourites.
Smoked salmon for DD1 and me and really good hamSmile. bread rolls and salad. Wine and then some sort of sweet bits to finish.
The sort of stuff my Mum has fun eating, but would never buy.
No cooking because we normally live in chaos here and house guests require some semblance of clean and tidy. I'm guaranteed still to be cleaning up to 1 minute before people arrive.

Jaquelinehyde · 11/09/2011 00:24

We go for a walk to look at the lights, then back in and whilst I bath with the dcs dh makes hot chocolate and a huge plate of crispy bacon sandwiches.

Perfect!

We have a family party every year at my Mum's which I do the food for. But this year, for the first time, I'm going to stay at home. (They will manage without me!)

DD has asked to make gingerbread and mince pies. So, I'm liking the idea of hot sandwiches (quorn sausage and egg for me, meaty stuff for DH and whichever DCs want) with film, mince pies ect.

Am getting rather excited about new traditions! Grin

ENormaSnob It has to be Christmas Vacation!

JoyceBarnaby · 11/09/2011 15:07

I always do gammon so that we can have cold gammon with the cold turkey on Boxing Day. For the last couple of years this has been paired with dauphinoise potatoes because I always make it 24 hours in advance and therefore makes it quite an easy meal. I have yet to find the ideal veg accompaniment, though.

Meglet · 11/09/2011 15:10

When I lived at home we had Dominoes pizza on Xmas Eve Grin.

Bear in mind this was an ultra-healthy household who never had takeaway the other 364 days of the year.

learningtofly · 11/09/2011 15:16

Good old boef borginion or posh stew as I like to call it.

Smells heavenly after the village carol service sung on the green around the Christmas tree.

Ofcourse before ds was born we would head to the pub!

starfishmummy · 11/09/2011 15:28

we cook a gammon joint for cold cuts over the holiday so time it so we have some of it hot with parsley sauce and Veg etc for xmas eve tea.

neversaydie · 11/09/2011 15:30

Cullen skink.

Pigleychez · 11/09/2011 16:26

Chinese takeaway has become a bit of a tradition here. Plenty of cooking going on the next day!

ExitPursuedByATroll · 11/09/2011 16:35

If we have people coming I usually do a fish pie (Delia's Luxury one). If it is just the three of use I do either chinese or indian bits (or both). I am liking the Middle East spread though - yum yum

LoveInAColdClimate · 11/09/2011 18:18

We have a huge piece of beef but with salad rather than roast dinner stuff. The leftovers make a nice mix with all the cold turkey and ham (mmmmmm).

anchovies · 11/09/2011 18:24

I always do Nigellas ham in coke with dauphinoise potatoes, red cabbage and creamed spinach. Followed by a really retro toblerone fondue. Did it one year for all our family and they wont let me change it :o
