I am getting one but it's lost in the post - is that any help? Oh and John Lewis sell them so you don't have to wait for Amazon to not deliver it.

Get it - I love mine to bits

DioneTheDiabolist · 13/12/2010 20:30

Am a Luddite. Like my books on paper and on the shelf where I can see them/loan them to others/sell them/burn them. Saw that ad. where the lady gets a new phone and has to transfer all her books over. That would be my idea of book hell.

Spend your voucher on books.

I'm hoping that Father Christmas is bringing me one!

I'm a book preferrer, to be honest, but I am very Blush at how many books I buy, and very mindful of the environmental cost. ANd to be honest, most of them are lightweight reads that I will never read again, so no need to keep them anyway.

whomovedmychocolate · 13/12/2010 20:32

Oy no dribbling on the Macbook

i like books too, but i love the idea of going away and instead of taking 4 books with me, just taking an ereader and being able to pack 2 more pairs of shoes. also being able to use t'interweb while reading...

Pashazade · 13/12/2010 20:37

Got one, great for what it is, personally using it to get lots of cheap classics that I never read as a child, and that would take up meters of bookshelf space I don't currently have! This has in no way stopped me from buying hard copies of new releases by authors I love or losing hours in various bookshops. I see it as stash in the bag lifesaver when I finish a paper book on the train and still have an hour to go!
So I would say get one!! The ipad whilst very funky is a bit big for having instead of a book.

MollieO · 13/12/2010 20:37

Am thinking of getting one too but can't make up my mind if the 3G one is worth it. If you don't have 3G how do you download books?

AnnoyingOrange · 13/12/2010 20:38

I like books, but I don't feel attracted to a kindle.
I wonder if I would change my mind if I used one ?

whomovedmychocolate · 13/12/2010 20:40

Poncey - I use my MacBook for no more than email/Internet and the occasional design thing. Blush

MollieO - I've worked that one out - we have a wireless network here and it can talk to that but I think it has a port and USB wire for non wireless households.

AnnoyingOrange - DH really wants a Kindle you see. I feel the same as you, I want to see one and see how it feels. May have to go to John Lewis and have a fiddle with one.

do u have to buy the books then download them on to it?? any idea how much it costs? was thinking about getting my mum one but im not sure she would be able to do it lol

Bluebell99 · 13/12/2010 21:44

I have had my kindle for just over a month. Didn't use it for a week and when i next tried to switch it on the screen corrupted. Amazon were very good and sent me a new one which arrived the next day. I haven't used it as much as I would have thought i would. The reason being I use the library alot and I like getting books for free! Also the books are quite expensive and are getting more so because some publishers are setting the prices for ebooks. Amazon was discounting them but is no longer allowed to.
I have the 3G one but have only downloaded books from home using the wifi.

careergirl · 13/12/2010 21:53

the technology for Kindles is really straightforward and downloading is done with a couple of clicks...it comes with a manual but you can work out how to use it without that to be honest.

Bluebell99 · 13/12/2010 22:58

Kindles are fairly straightforward, but I think it depends on how confident your mum is with ordering online and using amazon. I don't think my mum or mother in law would be able to use a kindle in terms of downloading books.

Clary · 14/12/2010 00:54

qwerty as an example a book Amazon suggested I might like (I would!) was £7.49 in paperback, £10 on kindle. hmmmmm

See, the actual book is cheaper and truly portable, whatever anyone says.

Also you can give it away when you've read it, saving room on yr bookshelf and spreading the joy.

I really don't get the kindle.

SantaClausImWorthIt · 14/12/2010 08:24

Don't tell me this now!

I thought the whole point was that so many books were cheap, if not free.

I bought DH a Sony e-reader last Christmas (before the Kindle was really available), and although it's good for him to use on the tube, the kind of books he likes to read (quite erudite history stuff [yawn]) are really expensive.

I was hoping that all the rubbish kinds of books I like would be cheaper than their paper equivalent.
