Presents for 6 y.o boy - getting completely desperate

FloozyintheJacuzzi · 28/11/2010 22:16

I am at an absolute loss as to what I can get DS1 for Christmas.

He is just 6, and a very gentle little soul who isn't into any of the Ben10 / action hero type of things that some of the other boys at school are interested in.

He has stacks of the ELC / Schleich farm & jungle animals and lots of dinosaurs. He likes all these but he has so many that I really don't think he needs any more. Other than that, he really does spend hours playing with soft toys, usually pretending they're a class of school children, or setting up a shop with them all for sale.

I have other children, so we already have plenty of lego and the like, which he doesn't play with anyway.

His main present is sorted (bike), but I need to come up with at least 2 presents up to about £30 on behalf of MIL and SIL.

What are your 5-7 y.o boys getting for Christmas? Help me out here.

DS is after Scooby Doo toys. He really wants the Scooby that you hide and then they have to find it.

Spoo · 28/11/2010 22:28

My boys (4 and 5) are mad on Match Attax, not sure if this is your sons sort of thing. DS1 has asked for a wii game, footie gloves DS2 has asked for a globe, a telescope, and yet more flipping hot wheels.

Just thinking of your son, what about a cash register? My sons love playing shops, they also have a selection of soft toys that seem to feature very highly in their lives.

My boys also love their Vtec cameras and take loads of photos of their animals.

Hope you thyink of something soon.

ja9 · 28/11/2010 22:31

what about story cds - complete roald dahl set or similar?

ja9 · 28/11/2010 22:32

does he have a ds? a ds game is always a hit here..

or what about something nice for his bedroom - new cool lightshade or twinkly lights (Laura ashley have gorgeous boys ones)or bed tidy / mirror / clock?

Dexterrocks · 28/11/2010 22:33

My recently turned 6 year old also loves to play with his soft toys and schleich.
I know this is controversial on Mumsnet but he also loves Playmobil toys and can play out the same "scenes" with the characters in them.
He has asked for a castle for Christmas as his big gift but there are small "take along" castles in the price range you are talking about.
Playmobil also do some small school sets, (as well as a massive and very expensive school).
Would he like a chalkboard/easel to play teacher with the soft toys? Or a cash register to add to playing shop with them?
The Bear Factory sells dressing up outfits for soft toys if he would find these fun for role playing. They have some very boyish ones as well as the girly ones.

iheartdusty · 28/11/2010 22:33

He sounds lovely! Presumably you have Playmobil (school, shops, zoo etc). There is a jungle safari set which looks good.

How about:

bungee bouncer simpler than a pogo stick

exciting sciency kits eg Richard Hammond Blast Lab

periscope
scooter
binoculars

Board games - Pictureka, Articulate for kids

Small size guitar, keyboard, recorder and lesson book?

metal detector
microscope

moon in my room or remote controlled solar system

Sylvanian families? There is absolutely no rule which says only girls can have them.

Craft kits

pets?

FloozyintheJacuzzi · 28/11/2010 22:33

thank you for your replies. I'm reassured to know that my DS isn't the only one who's still playing with soft toys!

I've seen a radio controlled rattlesnake that might go down well.

TTTT - if the hiding Scooby thing is anything like the hiding Postman Pat that my DS 2 got last year, then do yourself a favour and stock up on lots of batteries now!

DS (rising 6) wants the Playmobil vet stuff (there are several different sets in the range, although the bigger ones tip over your £30 limit).

NoahAndTheWhale · 28/11/2010 22:38

Ds is recently 7 and loves his soft toys :)

He has said he would like a picture for his room and some magnets :)

Think I might get something playmobil for him - he is pretty into it and loves making stories with it.

Your DS sounds lovely Floozy :)

FloozyintheJacuzzi · 28/11/2010 22:38

we've got the Playmobil vet set! It's fab, I highly recommend it Grin

(this is part of the problem. My children are very close in age, so we tend to have a lot of all the same stage toys - if one doesn't have it, one of the others does)

DD (5) has the playmobil vet :)

Himalaya · 28/11/2010 22:46

Hama beads

Dexterrocks · 28/11/2010 22:48

Yes the Playmobil Vet set is lovely. There are several sets in the range.

FloozyintheJacuzzi · 28/11/2010 22:50

Due to some weird x-posting thing, I missed loads of your posts until now.

I'm honestly nearly in tears at those of you saying he sounds lovely - I worry so much about him not being a "boy's boy", thank you so much Smile

And some fantastic ideas, thank you all so much.

Moon Dough looks quite good. I Santa might be bringing some for my DS.

Tikkabillajive · 28/11/2010 22:55

Sorry, I don't have any recommendations (apart from Playmobil) but I read the OP and thought how lovely your ds sounds, and how like my little boy who is only just turning 3 - I really hope he is still like this in 3 years' time! Smile

MollieO · 28/11/2010 22:55

I'd say hama beads too. Ds (6) is desperate to have his own as he has played with them at holiday club and loved making things. I didn't know until I bought some for a friend's dc and he said how much he likes them. Also second Playmobil or Lego.

notsureatall · 28/11/2010 22:59

Have got ds1 - nearly 6 a "Fast Trak" mini scalextric - type thing - £20 from Hawkins Bazaar. It packs away in its own little carry case

yellowkiwi · 28/11/2010 23:07

I didn't know what to get DS either as he's just had his 6th birthday and I struggled to come up with things for that. Today we went round a few shops and he no trouble writing to Santa with his requests! He's asked for a Playmobile fire station and fire engine - he's played with a friend's one, a telescope, chocolate and...clothes. I can't believe the last one! He is also desperate to do Build a Bear and wanted me to give him a go go hamster for his birthday as he said no one else would because they are for girls.

Dexterrocks · 28/11/2010 23:13

Yellow, you get more "boyish" go go hamsters now. They are Kung Zhu or something like that. You also get rock star style ones. That said my son has a standard one who looks like one of his guinea pigs and he loves it (the go go hamster that is although he loves his guinea pigs too)

Iamcountingto3 · 28/11/2010 23:22

He sounds like ds (who also spends much of his time playing with soft toys/random bits of plastic!) Here are some of his favourites/things he's getting this year
How about:

  • modelling stuff - ds loves plasticine/modelling clay
  • books/story CDs - ds's favs are all Dahl, but I imagine you've got those
  • really lovely arts stuff - nice crayons/pastils/chalks/paint etc
  • ds also wants a bear factory bear - the place is scarily compelling
  • HAma beads dragon set is a good boys one
  • stone/crystals discovery set (ds loves this)
  • real fossil
  • tricks/spy set
Kewcumber · 28/11/2010 23:26

DS is getting one of those CD player/karaoke mothercare things, art and draft stuff, piles of playmobil (but mostly robbers and police stuff).

Have also got him a snow white polly pocket with all dwarfs and wicked witch Blush because he loves the film and I reckon he will love it.

Still loves brio train stuff so more complicated connection for that and a remotecontrol train for it.

Kewcumber · 28/11/2010 23:27

ph yes lego goes without saying in our house particularly mini figures

gillybean2 · 29/11/2010 01:17

If he likes playing shop how about the elc till. It comes with barcodes you can stick on things and beeps when you swipe stuff and has play money etc obviously.

Only thing is they've gone to a pink or blue version. When I got ours it was one colour fits all orange.

Another vote for Hama beads. There are some very "boy" ish sets on Amazon.

My 6yo DS is manic, boisterious and hyper but also loves sitting down for ages making Hama bead creations.
