wideratthehips · 01/11/2010 16:18

dear all, i have done a lot of internet research on all the above and come away clueless!

we will get ds who will be 6.5 a ds for christmas but i don't understand really the difference between them and in reviews people are polarised, either love them or hate them. so for me and anyone else thinking of giving one as a gift could you post which version is the best and possibly any game recommendations. it will probably be a 'family' one though as we tend to share everything.

DSi is best, I think, unless your DS wants a bigger screen. I think that is the only diff between DSi and DSi XL.

DS and DSlite are older versions.

thanks for the advice, its going to be a big surprise for him so he hasn't been helping with the research!

I just have the DS and its fab

Great games are Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, plus any opf the Lego and Sat Wars ones
My console is old, but it works fine on everythign I do/ need to do, so I dont know what the new ones do, sorry

Poshpaws · 01/11/2010 21:06

DSi has a voice recorder, takes photos, you can play about with the photos (distort them). You can download music onto them.

DS1 (9) has one. He also had the old DS lite (until it broke), but he prefers the DSi because of the extras.

Clary · 01/11/2010 21:35

We have a DS lite for DD, then got DS1 a DSi as it was new and fancy.

When DS2 wanted one (or was judged old enough!) he only wanted a DS lite so that's what we got as it was cheaper.

I was all "need to get the newest thing" but in fact DS2 is never going to use camera/internet facility on DSi so Lite is fine.

They are phasing it out so you may get a bargain. Have also seen DSi a lot cheaper lately. DS is the old one, you don't want that.

DSXL is for old fogies who can't cope with teeny-tiny DSlite/DSi. Comes in super old-fogie colours too.

thanks all

ds (6) got DSlite for 5th birthday last year (DSi wasnt out yet).

We cheated a bit and bought one of those multigame cartriges off the internet with 100 games copied onto. Out of the 100 games we picked about 10 didnt work, but still a excellent buy (think it was about £70), this not only gave him loads of choice but meant he wasnt fiddling with or losing the games cartridges and if he didnt like a few of the games it was no great ££ loss (I even got a couple of games on it for me to play).

His favourite games from that cartridge which is about 1.5 yrs old now seem to be :

Mario Party
Mario Kart
Mario Bros
Zoo Tycon
Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs (something like that)
Lego Star wars
Cooking Mama

Clary · 01/11/2010 22:17

DS1 (11yo) likes Mario Kart and Super Mario Bros.

DD (9) likes Animal Crossing and Nintendogs.

DS2 (7) likes Fifa 10.

Actually they all like Mario Kart tho I can't see the appeal myself. They also all like Carnival Games.

wideratthehips · 02/11/2010 12:54

mario and lego seem to be tops! thanks all

My twin boys have just turned 7 they had dsi s last year. They love:-

New Super Mario
Lego Star wars
Mario Kart

one loves Cooking Mama and Gardening Mama

Carnival Games is a good introduction one which they had first.

I'd get the DSi as all the new games may have features eventually you won't be able to use on the old one.

Get a flip and play case for when it's dropped down the stairs.

lazydog · 03/11/2010 02:12

I'd definitely say don't go for the dsi xl as it has screens that are very nearly twice the size of the normal dsi, but exactly the same resolution, so it is noticeably blocky imho.

LelloLorry · 03/11/2010 02:44

They're all pretty much the same, DD2 has had each of the DS' and has the new one on her list for christmas.
The DSi is where you get the camera with it - fun for taking pictures and making them funny (like squeezed faces, silly hats etc.) however, if your DS is only 6 I doubt he'll know the difference.
The screens get a bit bigger each version, DSLite is a bit bigger than the original DS, however as the name suggests, a bit lighter too!
DSi you get the camera, bit bigger screen, not much lighter tbh.

Mario games for all ages, there are the Ninten-Dogs/Cats/Whatever new ones they have come out with, which might be fun if your DS likes animals.

DD1 has recently picked up the Art Academy game, though it's not much of a game iykwim.
Teaches her to draw like.
There are the Big Brain games, which are fun, but you might want to check the age rating, whilst the rest of the family might enjoy it, DS might not :/. Though if he's into maths and stuff he'll probably enjoy it.

The DS's also fit the older games from the Nintendo gameboys, so you can get some classics like Sonic, but there are DS games for Sonic now too, a bit reinvented :).

JebusBuiltMyHotQuads · 03/11/2010 07:10

Others have answered the query with fab advice but be warned...

Come next year all your DC's will be asking for the brand new Nintendo 3DS.

I can't wait for it myself Wink The game list is amazing A 3D version of Zelda Ocarina of Time?

Marks place as technophobe mother of 7 yr old.

Been scuttling round websites for bargain ones....

any recommendations for a 4 yo girl?

the tinkerbell/disney ones don't get great reviews on amazon and I'm not sure I can bear Peppa Pig

taffetacat · 15/11/2010 22:18

After some research ( getting DS(7) his first DS for Xmas ) as mentioned, the DSLite has been phased out and you can't buy new ones anywhere. Game sell reconditioned ones.

After having decided last week to get DS a white DSi, and seeing them for £99.99, they have now gone up by £15! Crafty wnakers. Is it worth running the gauntlet and waiting to see if they chicken before Christmas and reduce them again?

Bucharest · 16/11/2010 13:06

Taffeta, I'm hanging on. I reckon come December everyone is going to be lowering prices...all the codes and vouchers etc are not as good yet as I remember last year, so I'm hanging fire.

taffetacat · 16/11/2010 14:08

I like your style, Bucharest Grin

Bucharest · 17/11/2010 06:24

Taffeta- and anyone else with boys, Sainsbury's now showing dsi 25% off but they seem to have only black. £93. (dd would unfortunately not countenance a black anything!)

MrsDinky · 17/11/2010 09:30

Thank you for this thread, it is exactly what I needed too!

How much do the games cost roughly? Are there any games bundled or pre-installed on the DSi?

taffetacat · 17/11/2010 12:32

BUCHAREST!!!!!!

DH called me this am about the Sainsbo's offer. I have just bought him a white DSi in John Lewis and got them to price match......

Now for the accessories......

taffetacat · 17/11/2010 12:34

MrsD - the bundles are only a good deal if they are the games you want, and then you only save a few quid, really. Nothing is preinstalled.

Most of the current games cost around £23-27 but you can get cheaper older ones from about £10.

We are getting DS a few suggested by my SIL, incl Fifa 11.

Bucharest · 17/11/2010 13:22

I've just emailed JL to ask if they'll price match online because online (which is all I can do as am not back in UK till 17/12) is still showing £114.

Taff- what you need to do now, is open a Littlewoods/Very etc account, for new customers there is a £25 off a £50 spend thingy going on. (reminds me, I need to go and close my existing one, and open another so I qualify as a new customer )
