ie - they can buy what they want so doesn't need to be a treat as such. Last year I bought garden things, Christmas tea, biscuits or chocolates so would like something different if possible. TIA Smile.

A photo album full of their family members

phipps · 18/10/2010 17:49

Fabulous idea but they aren't my relatives so no idea how to go about it.

I very much doubt it. Grin One is just about able to turn on the computer and send an email atm. She is learning though Grin. The other doesn't even have a computer, ipod, etc.

Magazine subscription?

thisiswhataluv · 18/10/2010 18:03

pricey but lovely

EvilStar · 18/10/2010 18:04

I bought my MIL (who is 85) a really pretty small mohair scarf that was knitted to slip through itself and go just in the neck of a smart coat. I knew she had a new winter coat and she had commented that her scarves were too bulky to go under it. It was from a stall at a Christmas market and she was so pleased with it. Something hand crafted and a bit "different" can be a good option for someone who has lots of things and can buy what they need.

Just give them a £10 note. My daughter now grown up ish did that for both her grannies- they both found it hilarious and said it was great the payback had started!

She told them that she had appreciated cash over the years rather than cr&&&& gifts and she was sure that they would like cash too.

phipps · 18/10/2010 18:25

thisiswhataluv - I have added that to the potential list, thank you.

Simbacat - I will get them M&S vouchers but want to get them something to unwrap too. Thanks for the idea.

I can't do the meal thing as I live 100's of miles from them. The flowers are a great idea, maybe a Christmas plant display? Wine is tricky as I don't know what they drink. Thanks though.

Ask a local greengrocers for a fruit basket to be delivered

phipps · 18/10/2010 18:49

Oh, that is making me think of getting them a hamper.

Harrods do lovely hampers. As do M&S if that's more your budget. A nice christmas bouquet or wreathe would be lovely...or some mulled wine?

phipps · 18/10/2010 19:41

Harrods would be great but are they full of daft things?

I haven't got one for about 2 years, but it had loose leaf tea, christmas coffee, jams/chutneys, a tin of biscuits or crackers...then I got another one for my mum and it was crackers cheese and wine (that one was lovely)

phipps · 18/10/2010 19:44

I will take a look, thank you.

We just gave our parents a Kindle (the Amazon one, anyway). Dad is computer-literate, but mum isn't at all. She loves it, particularly because they can change the font, font size, kerning and contrast, which means that at last shecan read comfortably again. Her failing eyesight is a great distress to her, and the Kindle has made such a difference to her daily pleasure.

Bonsoir · 18/10/2010 19:50

Some lovely rose scented body cream from Annick Goutal.

worldgonemad72 · 18/10/2010 22:11

How about a nice blanket? maybe a handcrafted type, a bit boring i know but my dh nan loved hers a couple of years ago and still uses it now when she's sat down watching tv

maktaitai · 18/10/2010 22:18

Welly liners, if they are ever known to wear wellies.

Or cashmere socks.

I have a lot of relatives who have cold feet Grin

lilolilmanchester · 18/10/2010 22:36

do they know each other? If so, maybe tickets to a show or (cheaper) cinema vouchers?

phipps · 19/10/2010 08:11

No, they don't know each other. One goes for walks so some cashmere socks would be good to wear with her boots. I have never bought them before so can anyone recommend some please? I am going to M & S today is that is any good.

i bought MIL some fleece welly liners last year, the loved them

Iamcountingto3 · 19/10/2010 16:43

White Company do lush cashmere socks. Buy mothballs to go with them
