I hate it personally! We just visited family last year but this year as DS is 4, we'd like to do fun things with/for him, (as going to see my 80 year old aunt for a full day is too much for DH, never mind DS!)

We're in sheffield, but willing to travel!

What do you do?

would love to be able to be just me, dh & ds at home mooching Sad

On boxing day we go to the coast. DH and lots of other people jump in the sea to raise money for charity. We then go for a long, blustery walk, drink hot tea and go back to MIL's for cold turkey sandwiches and sit by the fire.

We see family and friends, have meals with them, go out walking/cycling etc. I like it. It's like a lull between two spectacular storms.

DH will be off boxing day and the 28th this year. He's a copper so often he's at work for the whole Christmas period. We'll be making the most of it. He's working on my birthday (NYE) 8pm until 6am. Joy!

WitchyWooWoo · 11/10/2010 12:15

usually just seeing family and friends. doing activities with dh and ds this year as dh has some of dec/jan off and i'll be very very pregnant so i might just sleep :o

OrmRenewed · 11/10/2010 12:16

Work usually Angry

LutyensLikesCake · 11/10/2010 20:33

Panto is always between Boxing Day and New Year. Plus one day ice skating at the Winter Wonderland - usually the 30th. Other than those two planned activities, we usually just mooch around, meet friends or go for walks. This year we will also have a newborn so I shall be adding sleep deprivation to the mix Grin

Bunbaker · 11/10/2010 20:47

I hate the period between Christmas and new year as well. We usually have MIL for Christmas and take her home the day after Boxing Day and then stay with her for a couple of days before returning here before the new year.

If the weather permits it we try and get a few walks in and might visit some friends in Leeds, but usually we vegetate and wait for the UK to open again. I loathe winter and the short days and long nights.

We are in South Yorkshire as well BTW.

mrspear · 11/10/2010 20:50

I find with school-age DCs, this is when tiredness sets in, without the pre-Christmas excitement to keep them bouyed up. We tend to eat, play with new toys, eat, watch family films, eat, go and spend any money/vouchers, eat, see friends, and maybe eat a bit.

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 12/10/2010 13:12

work Angry Envy

If I wasn't working, I'd use that week to have lovely wintry time with the DDs. Lazy days watching movies, bracing walks, fireside suppers and a day at the races. A panto or ice skating at one of the outdoor rinks would be a nice tradition to start. I'd love to spend some time in the kitchen because I enjoy cooking and christmas is the one time when food is truly plentiful in my house and there would be more time to experiment with recipes.

Sigh. I can dream.

tummytickler · 12/10/2010 13:24

we usually have a quiet week. Usually go and see a ballet or panto, go for walks, watch movies, visit friends that sort of thing. I try not to make it too busy.

The dc's also go and stay at their grandparents for one night, so we have a party whilst they are gone, so we have something grown up to look forward to after Christmas.

tassisssss · 12/10/2010 16:04

DH has to work on the 26th briefly this year but that's usually our pyjama day, well I nip to the sales but leave the rest of them in front of the TV! As TV is stricly rationed the rest of the year my kids love the whole watch TV and eat what you like all day thing! I usually drag everyone out for a walk at 4ish. We have panto booked for 27th this year. Otherwise very little planned, I think we'll invite some friends round.

lucyspangle · 15/10/2010 20:35

Both DH and I have the period between Christmas and New Year off work so we usually go away somewhere. Last year we went to Cardiff and ice skated at Winter Wonderland, went to a panto, went to the ballet etc. This year we are going to Stratford to see Matilda the Musical.

2anddone · 16/10/2010 14:56

in the past we have just stayed at home and ended up arguing about what we should do and how many times we should go visit dh family so this year we go to butlins on 27th and will be home on 2nd jan cant wait to not have the usual in law rows Grin

MuGGGhoulWump · 16/10/2010 14:59

Work for three days, and just mooch the rest of the time.
Have panto booked for the 18th.
