whomovedmychocolate · 10/10/2010 21:46

No but I wish I bloody did. :(

Would rather scrub toilets for ten hours than have dinner with the outlaws.

bigchris · 10/10/2010 21:48

I don't now, but did many times when I was nursing. Was sometimes more fun than others....

mememe30 · 10/10/2010 21:58

I'm doing a very long shift Christmas Eve and its looking like I'll get Christmas day off!!!!

SharonGless · 10/10/2010 22:01

SixtyFootDoll
Not got my shifts yet - my division isn't organised at all.We are being restructured in 6 weeks time and still don't know what shifts we are doing then never mind sodding Christmas Day. We only do 8 hour shifts on bank holiday though - how come you do 12 hours?
I have worked a fair few Xmas Days over the years though but none since DC were born. How old are yours? Can you have your Christmas Day with them on Christmas Eve - pretend you live in Scandanavia?

muggglewump · 10/10/2010 22:05

No, but we can't take time off over Christmas so when it's my turn I'll have to.
Luckily that's not till 2013, though it'll be three years in a row, plus New Years day too.

This year I'm off Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and the Day after which is the best for me really.

Still it's double time and DD will be old enough to be left by then so no Childcare costs and I'm home by 2.30, and I'll maybe be able to wangle earlier if I'm still in the job anyway!

twolittlemonkeys · 10/10/2010 22:05

I'm scheduled to work (carer/assistant for blind lady) however she's staying with her family over Christmas, so I'm not needed, but still get paid Grin

SixtyFootDoll · 10/10/2010 22:08

SG - we do 4 on 4 off.
Am in Custody so hoping its quiet Grin

SharonGless · 10/10/2010 22:12

Lol at custody being quiet!! Although I have to say on the Xmas Days I have worked have been OK as long as on earlies. Lates and nights are a different story once the family spirit has degenerated after the Queens Speech. Boxing Day is far busier. Does that mean you are working all the bank holidays then?

SixtyFootDoll · 10/10/2010 22:15

No only Xmas day
So will do Xmas on boxing day.
Although DH is job too and is working nights Xmas night!!
Just think of the money.

OP posts:
SharonGless · 10/10/2010 22:34

Oh bugger - that does cock things up slightly! Was imagining you coming in after your 12 hour shift to children in PJ's, DH with glass of bubbly and Xmas tea all cooked. Oops
You are right - think of the money.

SixtyFootDoll · 10/10/2010 22:40

LOL SG that would be pure fantasy on many levels!!

OP posts:
Northernlurker · 10/10/2010 22:46

I don't have to but a huge thank you to those who will be doing so - and keeping us all safe, warm, treated, rescued etc Smile

SixtyFootDoll · 11/10/2010 13:32

Thanks NL thats a nice thing to say.

I used to work in a job where 24 hour cover was needed.
i used to get in early and request that I worked NYE.The shift would work out so that I would start about 4,oopm on NYE and finish about 12 NYD (I slept over) DH would bring the kids down to see me and have a cup of tea and chat with the residents for a while. This way meant I didn't have to work Christmas day or Boxing day.

girlywhirly · 11/10/2010 14:27

My dad was in nursing, he used to opt for a Christmas morning shift, and come home for lunch at 2pm when I was older (12+) He said it was so a staff member with young children could have the opportunity to book the morning with them opening their presents, and possibly an early lunch. We used to hold back some of our presents until Dad got home so that we could open them together.

Fimbo · 11/10/2010 14:31

I echo NL.

WitchyWooWoo · 11/10/2010 15:03

again, with NL and Fimbo thankyou all

MrsSawyer · 13/10/2010 10:34

Both my mum and my brother are working this year, my mum works in a hospital and is down to work but my brother is has volunteered to work so that someone with young kids can have the day with their little ones.

We're all eating together at 4pm.

Librashavinganotherbiscuit · 13/10/2010 12:19

*crossing fingers DH doesn't have to work Xmas day (A&E) but he hasn't worked the last 3 so I think our luck may run out soon, he has worked the last 3 NYE but with young chidren it's not like we would have been partying on the Thames anyway!

KathH · 13/10/2010 12:24

I dont but dh is working Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day 6.30am - 6.30pm as he has done for the past 5 or 6 years so have got used to it now. It's a pain but the triple time comes in handy when he gets paid in January!

TennisFan · 14/10/2010 10:23

When I was growing up we lived on a big dairy farm - my Dad worked every day including Christmas. Later I worked for airline, and although didn't fly christmas day, usually opted for the days around Christmas.
I think this is why I don't really treat Christmas day like anything special - its only a day, and so what if you are working or not.

My DH used to be police and worked if scheduled - it really doesn't bother me.

This year we will travel to NZ and will be on a farm again, so probably just be a like a normal day there.
