Christmas films - what are the must haves?

FingonTheValiant · 04/10/2010 17:02

I've just tried to round up my Christmas films, so that they can be stored elsewhere, and realised that I have hardly any!

I have:

Muppets Christmas Carol
The Snowman and Father Christmas
Santa Claus The Movie
The Nightmare Before Christmas
The Hogfather
Gremlins1&2

That's it - it's woeful!

I've got a few films that I always watch around Christmas time - The Princess Bride, Mary Poppins etc, but I'd like some more Christmas classics.

What are your favourites?

DH has decided to add Stardust to our christmas list - similar vibe to the princess bride (but not quite as good)

ConnorTraceptive · 04/10/2010 17:03

It's a Wondefull Life
Family Man
Love Actually

tefal · 04/10/2010 17:05

Miracle on 34th Steet and the polar express.

LunarSea · 04/10/2010 17:06

Polar Express

Francagoestohollywood · 04/10/2010 17:07

Fanny and Alexander.

maktaitai · 04/10/2010 17:07

For me it's My Fair Lady but I admit it's not exactly Christmassy as such. It just always used to be on telly at Christmas in the mid 70s.

FingonTheValiant · 04/10/2010 17:08

Are there two versions of Miracle on 34th? Which one would you recommend?

I could have sworn I had the Polar Express and Stardust, but can't find them anywhere.

Cant believe I don't have It's a Wonderful Life.

Haven't heard of Family Man, I'll look it up!

My DD loves Home Alone 1 and 2.

Also the Grinch is a great one.

You have got me all excited about Christmas now.

Did you find an Advent book you liked btw?

FingonTheValiant · 04/10/2010 17:10

Wow, Fanny and Alexander looks pretty intense.

I love miracle on 34th street the one with ppierce brosnan and richard attenborough rather than the black and white original.

as an aside, do you thing that 6 is too young to see home alone?? I think DS1 would love the slapstick comedy.

FingonTheValiant · 04/10/2010 17:12

Home Alone were my favourites as a child!

Yes thanks, I got the 24 stories one, I'm umming and ahhing still about Waiting for Noel. Thanks for sending me the reveiw! I'm just waiting for it to arrive!

Love Actually and The Holiday Blush . In my defence it's the only time I watch them

The Santa Clauses (DD loves them)
Santa Claus the Movie
Elf
White Christmas
Muppet Christmas Carol
Snowman/Father Christmas (Raymond Briggs ones)
Brambly Hedge Winter and Wind in the Willows

We also have a very odd Rudolph movie, an animated one that DD adores but makes me want to hurt people.
That's the lot I think.

lazycow007 · 04/10/2010 17:15

Me too though 3/4 and 5 were a dire disappointment!

Glad you ordered that one - it looks delightful. Roll on Dec 1st!

FingonTheValiant · 04/10/2010 17:15

I think I saw home alone 2 at the cinema, and it came out when I was 7. My overall memory is over the amazing toy shop! I'd already seen Home Alone, so I think 6 sounds fine.

OP posts:
lazycow007 · 04/10/2010 17:16

Hey Tippy we have that wierd Rudolph one too, came free with Daily Mail i think. DD loves it too - can't think why Confused

FingonTheValiant · 04/10/2010 17:18

I had no idea there were so many! Think I've only seen 1 & 2, which in that case will be the only ones allowed over the threshold

Colour "Miracle..." then.

I saw Elf last year and was embarrassed by how much I enjoyed it Blush

I went to see Nativity last year (and I NEVER go to the cinema) and almost walked out, it was so crap.

Miracle on 34th Street for me has to be the new one from teh 90's

nannynobnobs · 04/10/2010 17:40

The original Grinch cartoon film, it has Boris Karloff doing the voices and narration and we still watch it in the year :)
Polar Express definitely.
I love Elf! I get something in my eye near the end...

sophiecattoo · 04/10/2010 17:58

FingonTheValiant · 04/10/2010 18:34

Loving how popular films like Elf and The Santa Clause are - I thought everyone would come and say they were rubbish - glad I'm not the only juvenile :o

I was also expecting everyone to say old is gold re Miracle on 34th Street - I've not seen the new one, so I'll put that on my amazon list as well!

Thanks for all your suggestions!
