Stacking cups. Brilliant.
1 yr old DTs and has been their fave since about 4 mos.

TechLovingDad · 02/10/2010 12:57

The boxes that the presents came in.

Fayrazzled · 02/10/2010 12:58

For my son (5) the Playmobil soccer set. He plays with it every day without fail.

For my daughter (almost 3) she loves her baby dolls and Happyland.

Big fails here: toy kitchen doesn't get played with nearly as much as I thought it would. Scalextric (breaks too easily)

bigchris · 02/10/2010 12:59

What age for?
Wooden blocks , Lego, dolls, toy pushchairs, Hoover, washing machine etc

jamaisjedors · 02/10/2010 13:00

plastic animals.

(age 1.5-6+ every day).

LowLevelWhiingeing · 02/10/2010 13:03

My sons are 3 and 5.

Best buy - take-along Thomas train track set. And of course lego. Both are played with daily and have been for the last 3 years.

Worst buy is fecking transformers.

DS: "Make it change mummy!"
LLW: "I can't! no-one can!! grumble grumble" grrrrr...

ninedragons · 02/10/2010 13:09

Hits (DD, 2.5) have been alphabet fridge magnets, dolls' house, matchbox cars and cradle & baby doll (plus all the clean teatowels, as blankets).

And a Sesame Street wheelie suitcase that comes with us everywhere

bigchris · 02/10/2010 13:13

Oh and elc play food and plates etc and shopping trolley
bought when ds was 18 months , still played with by him , 6.5 and dd, four

thumbwitch · 02/10/2010 13:24

A $2 black Hallowe'en cat has been the biggest favourite ever. DS is 2.10 now and other toys that have been played with lots are his collection of farm animals, the Duplo/Brio train track and trains (we have a couple of battery-operated engines and some push-along ones). For his 1st birthday we bought him a 7in1 trekker from Mothercare and the "radio" part that goes in the steering wheel has been a favourite as well -it took him a while to get round to loving the trekker but he does now so that was money well spent.

He's not so keen on lego yet - but brings it out every fortnight or so, so it isn't ignored. The main things he's not so keen on are the fluffy toys, especially the bigger ones. He's just got into toy cars in a big way too, Matchbox ones mostly.

But all children are different anyway!

thumbwitch · 02/10/2010 13:27

Oops, forgot - for his 2nd birthday, bought him a Crayola magnetic drawing board/desk thingy - not used over much in the first few months but steadily increasing in usage, now it is daily that he "does drawing", the pens/pencils/crayons just stay in the desk and the paper stays on the clip so it's ready to go whenever he likes. As he gets older still, the magnetic letters/ numbers will be more useful. I like longterm toys!

lucysmam · 02/10/2010 13:48

Toy kitchen with our dd, bought last xmas from wilko for £30 and she plays with it every day. Even more enthusiastically if she has helped with some kind of kitchen activity in my kitchen

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 02/10/2010 13:51

Lego and trainset for DS. Not cheap, but in terms of cost per hour of play they are the best thing we've bought. He is 2.

Astrophe · 02/10/2010 13:54

micro scooters
nice wooden play food/tea bags/tea set etc
K-Nex/Kid K-nex (which are compatible with duplo or lego, depending on the size)
Hama beads and paraphanalia (or Ikea equiv)
trampoline
woolen blankets (from charity shop) - for cubby house building.
match box cars
books, books, books
Audio books - Alice in wonderland, Paddington, Sophie series, My naughty little sister, Magic Faraway Tree...

Checkmate · 02/10/2010 13:59

for all my DD's and DS's

  • Wooden toy food (not so much the toy kitchen though)
  • Dolls pushchairs (often with each other in rather than dolls; they like pretending its a wheelchair] Confused
  • Dressing up Clothes
  • thishide and seek eggs has been all of my kids favourite toy age 1-2.
  • Wheely bug ride-on.
Checkmate · 02/10/2010 13:59

Oooh, agree with Hama beads too, their favourite crafty thing and has been for yeeearrs.

Astrophe · 02/10/2010 14:05

checkmate, we have those hide and squeak eggs too, and like them, and also wheely bug :)

Even 14 month old DD2 loves hama beads...she often has a mouthful! eek!

TechLovingDad · 02/10/2010 14:10

I was devastated when we had a clear out and DD said, I don't really like my lego dad you can throw that out.

sniff.

CatIsSleepy · 02/10/2010 14:18

for dd1, toy pushchair + dolls/soft toys
teaset, play food
fisherprice car with people in, inherited from her cousins
Happyland house from ELC with people in

dd2 is now 18m and is loving the pushchair too, she generally enjoys pushing wheeled things around too

TheHouseofMirth · 02/10/2010 16:54

Wooden trainset (Ikea version is cheaper than Brio and much better made than Tesco version). Both DSs have played with it from about 18 months.

A Scuttlebug, also from about 18 months.

Bead frame.

this game is great for all ages.

A good selection of musical instruments.

Fisher Price Garage.

Lego.

We have a toy kitchen in our real kitchen and although DSs have not played with it hugely it is always a big hit with visiting children.

I will never again buy Transformers or Hot Wheels sets.

Runoutofideas · 02/10/2010 17:55

This game . I can put it out and leave them to it and my dds (5 and 3) will play for ages!

Other than that dd1 is happy with a pile of books, paper and pens while dd2 prefers dolls with clothes which come on and off. Both have pretty much ignored happyland and megabloks were a bit of a waste of time. Just depends on the child though...

IUsedToBeFab · 02/10/2010 18:00

Duplo - ds got it between 1-2 and still plays with it now he is 9 and has lego.

Train set.

Play food.

sfxmum · 02/10/2010 18:17

she might be 5 and the Thomas passion has waned but the trains still come out albeit as part of elaborate town story

bran · 02/10/2010 18:22

A set of toy cooking implements and toy food and groceries. They were bought for DS when he was about two and still played with now that he's 6. It was one of the first things that he and DD (nearly 3) played with together.

Mr Potatohead from Toy Story has been another long-lasting hit with both DC.
