Introvert in an extrovert church

As above...that's me. Not.that anyone believes it, as I sing in the band and am smiley and conversational.
But...
The church where I go is full of modern songs, no liturgy, shouty presentations, action songs, "family focused"( ie aimed at children) and I find services utterly exhausting. I'm not the only one. DH and several band members have said the same thing. A couple of the band have left.

The Rector ( less than a year in post) has firmly stated this is how he wants it to be. He wants a church full.of young people, not old faithfuls and feels incorporating traditional gives a mixed message.

Alternative churches in the area are sadly similar.

How do i navigate this? Would sitting in a corner pew look mardy?

There's a lot to like but I need something more contemplative for my spiritual satisfaction.

Quakers? I’d be the same as you. Would hate it

I empathise @FuzzyPuffling as a natural introvert, I came to faith in an extrovert church and at that time and for that season it was 'right'. As I matured, my need was for something more contemplative and again, for a time and for that season, I moved into another flavour of church which was 'right' (more high-church Anglican). I enjoyed and felt safe with the order of things. My preference now is for home church as it suits my circumstances. The one constant in my different expressions of church has been my walk with Jesus.

I've thought about it!

I'm not sure why, in order to attract " yoof" we have to wave our arms about and sing songs of dubious musical merit. My friend's granddaughter ( aged 7) asked " Granny, why is it all on one note?". Not wrong there.

Even quiet moments are filled with the Rector hurling himself on the floor in a position of supplication

It's all too performative for me.

I've done lots of online research of other churches, and came across an article, 9 years old, which was bemoaning the lack of trad, liturgical CofE churches in this city.

My good friend ( sadly not local to me) also ended up with home church for similar reasons. There is a High church reasonably close- maybe I need to try that and perhaps alternate.

A local Anglican church had the same problem. The older people mostly left, taking their money with them. Young families can't generally commit as much money and within a few years the church was effectively bankrupt. Crap vicar eventually was removed, another excellent vicar was appointed, restored proper services, repaid all the debts, and past parish share owed within nine months. But many of us didn't go back, having settled elsewhere.

FuzzyPuffling · 18/10/2024 17:31

Yes, @Muddyford. The HTB plant church next to ours ( duplication?) is in the student area and full of young people, light shows and loud music. ( Anyone seen the "Rev" episide with the smoothie bar??)
But it has very real financial issues as the students are poor and transient.

Catholic church, my dear :)

Financial issues?! HTB churches, no way
I went once to HTB and students in shorts and open decolletages were serving drinks for 1 pound the plastic cup

Catholic church, my dear :)

Sadly, not Catholic. It would be a step too far for my Methodist childhood and C of E adulthood.
I'm not sure Jesus would care though!

MightSoundCrassButItsFactual · 18/10/2024 17:36

yea but bear in mind even liturgical C of E are not standing up anymore for the protestant teachings.

FuzzyPuffling · 18/10/2024 17:38

But I couldn't take communion in a Catholic church.

if they give it to me, you can
I am born as Orthodox and have been in all of them since migrated here

MightSoundCrassButItsFactual · 18/10/2024 17:41

I would leave it here because is for introverts which I also am. I do BSF international in French , gives me lovely time to ponder deep using English and French and quiet time to do the zooms - like a online house group. Just another idea

mitogoshigg · 18/10/2024 17:43

Look around, there will be a church for you. I'm a traditional hymn and evensong fan myself so I do have to go into the city for that but twice a month local church had a trad service

Catholic church, my dear :)

I eventually converted after swithering for 25+ years. But the Catholic Church also has dome juvenile music, though at least in the context of a proper liturgy. And other Masses have hymns. I have not regretted my move at all, despite that.

FuzzyPuffling · 18/10/2024 17:45

Ah, you're all so lovely. Thank you. I'm really appreciating your thoughts and suggestions.

I'm not sure I could convert as next year my DD will start training to be a C of E priest. I need to be in to support her fully.

I feel for you…I’m an introvert too. I like Church to be somewhere I can quietly contemplate. When I came back to Christianity, I knew I wouldn’t get on with the more extroverted styles of worship. I started to attend an Orthodox Church near me and instantly felt at home. Ended up converting.

I wish there were more options for people that like the more traditional forms of liturgy. It’s such a shame they are so hard to find in the C of E.

T4phage · 18/10/2024 18:23

I'm Orthodox and we don't have any of that nonsense. The Liturgy and other services are very ordered and beautiful and we don't even use instruments.

Unfortunately a lot of churches now are just offering entertainment and the focus is on self.

Elsbetka · 18/10/2024 18:28

My mum is CofE but went to an Orthodox church for years because she just found it suited her - more contemplative, calming, small-scale.

Screamingabdabz · 18/10/2024 18:32

Cathedral services?

FuzzyPuffling · 18/10/2024 18:34

Screamingabdabz · 18/10/2024 18:32

Cathedral services?

Yes on occasion, but too far for regular worship.

It sounds as though you are in a city OP, but if not you could try a traditional church in a more rural area - the C of E has churches that do either more trad services and liturgy, or a mix of those and more family friendly ones. They are usually open in the daytime too, for peaceful reflection.
But it is about the church community too - not just going to services ideally.
i hope you find something that feels right to help you feel closer to God.
The HTB worries me for several reasons, one of them being that they are most likely complementarian, but are very good at not making this known as they should.

NewName24 · 18/10/2024 21:56

How do i navigate this?

By looking for a Church that suits your tastes and preferred style of worship better.

Don't restrict yourself to CofE. You say you have Methodist roots, and there are Baptist, URC, and many other denominations, plus of course many different styles of Worship in the CofE.

I mean, as you know yourself, the Methodist Church is so much better for when you get a presbyter you struggle to get along with, you can count down until they move. It sadly doesn't work like that in the CofE - he might not move on for decades - so you have to, sadly. Or, as some others have suggested, alternate, and go somewhere quieter and more contemplative some weeks and remain part of your community be going there sometimes.

FuzzyPuffling · 19/10/2024 07:23

Thank you, everyone, for your understanding and.supportive thoughts. Very much appreciated.
