Pinprick bruise rash.

I noticed a very small pin prick type bruise on DD's chest the other day, doesn't fade under pressure. Thought nothing of it as she was totally fine in herself.

Last night I woke up to her vomming, when I went in she had puked up loads of phlegm, half hour later she puked another small amount then slept until I woke her up to take DS to preschool, got to school she threw up some more thick goo, I've just got her undressed and she has a few more of these bruises. I've rang the doc and she has an appointment at 15:30.

I'm trying really hard not to google here, but from previous hypochondriac moments I remember unusual bruising being not very good.

How old is she? I'd be going to A&E with that rash, pdq.

Any news SmallShips? Thinking of you and your DD.

SmallShips · 23/06/2010 16:05

Hi, thanks all, took her to the doctor earlier, he said vomiting bug and gave me a prescription for calpol .

She's still red hot, the two spots are still there, not coughed up any phlegm since this morning but I'm keeping a close eye on her.

The spots that won't faade are often the first sign of a very bad infection...

SmallShips · 23/06/2010 16:25

he didn't listen to a word I said, they were quite obviously non blanching, he said "you don't need to worry unless the spots don't fade and as there are only 2 of them it's no problem"

She's just gone to bed dosed with calpol.

She NEEDS to go to A&E. Please....just TAKE her!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 23/06/2010 16:49

yes, take her now, if you haven't already!!!

belgo · 23/06/2010 16:50

did the doctor put his finger on them and press?

Are there only two spots?

ilove · 23/06/2010 16:53

My little girl, at 15 months old, had a temperature and was crying. that was it...

I took her in. Had I not, she'd have died from kidney failure from the urine infection she had that has actually damaged her kidneys because I left her overnight on calpol.

Seriously...you NEED to get her looked at PROPERLY.

I know this is what you are trying to avoid but if it's meningitis and septicaemia that you are concerned about I'm adding a link to the Meningitis trusts "symptoms checker www.meningitis-learning.org/meningitis-symptoms-checklist.aspx"

A petechial rash on the chest can be caused by coughing or vomiting. Always better to be safe though so if as her mother you feel this is more than a childhood bug then trust your instincts and get a second opinion (A&E)

A "normal" childhood bug will see your DD having ups and downs. Anything nasty will see a steep decline.

Hope she gets better soon.

Flighttattendant · 23/06/2010 17:05

What a rubbish doctor.

Please try and get her seen again as soon as you can, we are all really concerned. You are entitled to a second opinion - I got one when I had something pretty serious and the first doctor was one I'd previously trusted.

This often happens, it's up to you to push for a proper consultation where you are listened to.

TimeForANewWan · 23/06/2010 17:27

If your instinct tells you that it is more serious than just a common, simple childhood infection take her to a&e now!!! No one should belittle your fears, if she is fine all you have done is spent a couple of hours getting a 2nd opinion (you are NOT wasting anyone's time - it's their JOB), if however it is more serious the earlier she is seen the better.

Good luck! and keep us updated!!

SmallShips · 23/06/2010 20:33

Took her for a second opinion up the hospital, she's got a nasty virus, have to keep an eye on the bruises and if they don't go after the virus has I need to take her back to the GP for blood tests.

Her temp has come down a bit and she's in bed reading.

Thanks for all your advice.

Oh well done...that is a relief, I hope they do go away by themselves.

Thankyou for the update, SS.

DS (13mo) had something very similar to this on Monday. Nursery sent him home and GP referred us to the hospital as there were some strange bruises that came up. They did blood and urine tests but all clear. They put it down to a virus.
I wonder whether it may be a reaction to his MMR which he had last Tues?

SmallShips - hope your DD feels better soon. Glad you got her checked and second opinion.

Alouiseg · 23/06/2010 21:23

Smallships if I was you I'd insist on blood being taken.
