i just went in to check on my 3 year old boy, and he was lay on the bed jerking, carried on for about 10 seconds, was it a seizure, could it just be that he was startled by me opening the door, he is still asleep. what should i do, if anything??

Does he have a fever at all? Could it be a Febrile Convulsion?

PrettyCandles · 15/06/2010 23:47

Does he have a temperature? Has he been at all off-colour today? Did the jerking look at all like a normal sort of movement? Was it his whole body jerking or just some of his limbs?

(As I type I can hear my 3yo rocking and banging away in his bed upstairs. When dh and I go up to bed, sometimes we find him asleep in the position in which we put him to bed, other times he is lying any which way or even on the floor.)

kimbles1984 · 15/06/2010 23:49

his whole body was jerking and his arms and legs were straight. he hasnt been unwell, although he could be hot as it is a hot night. ive carried him into my bed and he hasnt woke up, he usually wakes up at the slightest thing.

If in ANY doubt whatsoever call either NHS Direct 0845 4647 (correct number even tho seems short) or emergency dr. Not worth risking it best getting advice urgently. Hope he's ok x

kimbles1984 · 15/06/2010 23:51

i'll ring nhs now, i was going to at first but when i filled in their checklist online it just said to see gp today, so wasnt sure what to do :S

bev2102 · 15/06/2010 23:51

You really need to wake him to check he's rowsable. If you cant wake hime call 999 if you can call Nhs direct or on call dr x

bev2102 · 15/06/2010 23:52

Let us know x

anchovies · 15/06/2010 23:52

Have you woken him up? I would wake him immediately and use that as a guide as what to do next

Butterpie · 15/06/2010 23:52

Yep, that's a calling the doctor/nhs/ambulance thing I'm afraid. Can you rouse him at all?

bev2102 · 15/06/2010 23:54

Strange question but has he wet himself?

kimbles1984 · 15/06/2010 23:56

i dont know, he has a nappy on. going to go try to wake him up now.

OP posts:
bev2102 · 15/06/2010 23:56

If he's wet himself it's a more serious seizure often associated with epilepsy and you must call 999 for ambulance NOW x

bev2102 · 15/06/2010 23:57

Good luck - holding my breath hoping you can rowse him x

PrettyCandles · 16/06/2010 00:00

Definitely try to wake him.

bev2102 · 16/06/2010 00:02

If you can rowse him ok next step is to take his temperature then ring NHS Direct or GP (theyll ask for his temp so best to know it). Any luck waking him?

kimbles1984 · 16/06/2010 00:11

My dd had frequent febrile convulsions, caused by ear infections. V frightening and sounds like what your ds may have experienced. Came on v quick and was told not so much the temp of the child itself but the rapidity in which a temp suddenly goes up due to infection and their inability to cope with. V frightening. DD always fell asleep straight away afterwards, always as white as a ghost and then would be very tearful when eventually woke. Thanksfully at nearly 4yrs she has not had many recently and appears to be growing out of them. How is your ds today?

bev2102 · 16/06/2010 23:49

How is your DS today? What did dr do/say? Hope he's better x

kimbles1984 · 16/06/2010 23:57

he is fine today his usual self, was scared all night though because he was very cool and pale, never felt so scared as i did last night. i dont wanna tell pead tho as i am sure she thinks i exaggerate things!!!! he has asd symptoms but the 2 times pead has seen him hes been normal, although speech therapist has seen him being crazy.

OP posts:
kimbles1984 · 16/06/2010 23:58

his movement was like his whole body was shaking as though you was extremely extremely scared but i couldnt stop it for about 10 secs??

OP posts:
kimbles1984 · 17/06/2010 00:06

it was just so strange that it was happening as i walked into his room, makes me wonder if it has been happening while i havent been there? i kno its unlikely but his speech is incomprehensible still. i dunno, i know theres something not right but dont know what because autism dont fit with macs imagination, but my dad has schizophrenia, its just so scary. and my 8 year old has for the last few months been seeing smoke that isnt there! just dont want to sound neurotic to the docs i suppose. what do ido!?

Glad he's alright.

While not wanting to make you worry unecessarily, I also didn't want to suggest it wasn't a seizure in case it was and you discounted it. But it night not have been a seizure.

My 9yo goes through phases of making strange movements and noises at night. He probably did it most between about 3 - 6y. At first I thought that the movements and noises were part of his dreams, but then I realised that they were too rhythmic and repetitive - almost tic-like. My siblings and I (particularly me!) used to do a lot of sleepwalking and sleeptalking, and I wnder whether this is part of the same 'family' of behaviours. I know that children can get up to all sorts of worrying things in their sleep, eg head-banging or rocking on all-fours, both of which ds did at about 3y, without there being anything wrong.

Have you taken your 8yo to the optician?
