I don't know if it just me being a bit ott or if something is up. I am going to get him a gp appointment this week anyway, but at the mo i think I will more than likely get fobbed off.

Have just sat and written out what has happenend and when, so will retype here if thats ok and then it would be great if you could say wether you think I am being neurotic or wether you would also be concerned.

Just before Easter - Ds sick three times during the night. No dioreah and no one else ill. Fine the next day.

Tues 20th April - Bad headache, clutching head and crying. Given calpol and fluids and rested and then ok, although quiet.

Fri 23rd April - Severe headache again, calpol given but vomitted straight back up. Fell asleep and was fine in morning.

Sat 1st May - Vomitted once during the night. Ok next day although off his food.

Mon/Tue 3&4th May - General upset stomach, slight dioreah and nausea. Other family members also felt a bit off.

Sat 8th May - Got upset at bedtime as felt sck and had funny feeling in chest. Calmed down and then slept ok.

Thurs May 14th - Ate breakfast but then complained of feeling sick. Vomitted twice. Lay quietly for an hour or so then started complaining of stomach pains. Vomitted again around 11am. Perked up alot and statred to watch tv. Suddenly became very restless and agitated and asked for tv off. Fell asleep for roughly 1 hour. Woke suddenly complaining of bad headache, very upset. Headache got worse and ds very agitated and also complaining of lower back pain. Ds then starts complaining of the light hurting his eyes so I take him to a&e.
Wait in a&e for roughly 40 min and ds is very upset, feels sick, head really hurting. Gets taken through to cubicles where he is given calpol. This makes him vomit again. After vomitting he makes a sudden recovery, headache goes, no feeling sick and absolutly fine. Urine checked and clear, blood sugar fine and a&e doc says it is just a gastro viral type of thing.
Take ds home, he eats two crackers and then falls asleep for about 3 hours. Wakes complaining of a headache again. I give him calpol and water and move him into my bed. He sleeps ok, although fidgetty and complaining of feeling hot (no temp). Wakes the next day absolutly fine.

Sat 15th May - Ds fine all day been eating as normal. Goes to bed at 9pm and wakes at 10 upset and disorientated saying his chest feels funny and he feels sick. I calm him down and he goes back to sleep. Sleeps fine for rest of the night.

Sun 16th May - Ds shoots out of bed and runs into bathroom saying he feels sick again. He isn't sick. Gets into bed with me and complains of funny feeling in chest again. Lies quietly for about an hour and is then fine.

And thats it so far. A couple of points. The severe headache, vomitting then sleep I have always assumed is migraines. He has had probably one/two a year since he was about 4, but then has had 3 in the last few weeks.

Also the feeling funny in his chest. I think this is him worrying about actually being sick. Have explained to him that if he is sick it is fine, I will clear it up, clear him up and it is nothing to worry about.

Other than that, I have no clue what is going on. I think a gp is going to think I am slightly nuts tbh, but surely this is not normal ?

Did you mention googling brain tumour/cancer? Only I know a little girl who was overlooked so much so that they put her in hospital and treated her for anorexia (at 7) after seeking medical help for headaches, sickness and social withdrawal as well as lack of appetite. After being in an eating disorder ward for three weeks she said she couldn't see only then did she get a brain scan, well eyes looked at and they could see the tumor. It had crushed her thyroid and following surgery she will never have children, always feel hungry and has special needs. I would seriously push for a scan, be a pain in the arse but do push it.

Better to know it is definitely not brain cancer before ruling out an allergy.

MrsMorgan - if your GP has no idea, you really do need to push for a referral to a consultant. If you say that you insist that your DS is referred, you will not be refused.

Do you have private healthcare? If you do, mention that and in my experience I have found that the GP will happily refer you to anyone at your request. Unfair, but true. I have private healthcare but there was a period between leaving home (when I was covered by my parents' policy) and starting work (when I got my own) that I had to fight tooth and nail for a particular referral. When I had private cover, it was always agreed to immediatly.

If you don't have private healthcare, insist and insist and insist. Whatever this is, you need to know asap, if nothing else so your poor DS doesn't feel so ill!

posieparker · 17/05/2010 13:36

ps that girl is now an adult and she sued the medics and received over £1million opounds which means they were definitely at fault.

MrsMorgan · 17/05/2010 13:36

No I didn't mention the brain cancer thing at all tbh. The gp did check his eyes and the optician also checked them really well and the backs of his eyes (which he found a hilarious concept lol).

The dioreah doesn't fit at all with the brain tumour symptoms whereas it does fit with abdominal migraines.

I know that morning vomitting is one of the key symptoms of brain tumour and so if ds startts that at all, I will take him back.

I think that maybe it could be a combination of infection and migraines tbh. Will be interesting to see if the stool sample brings anything up.

no they don't know yet about my dd. thanks for asking, i am sat here wating for a cal about her mri, and wether we are to go back in as she's worse again.

So, follow the procedure, get the poo, keep a note. With any luck, his symptoms will start to lessen over time. Anti sickness med sounds like it might help in his general wellbeing.

MrsMorgan · 17/05/2010 13:44

Oh gosh I didn't realise your dd had had an mri. I tried to find your thread the other day but couldn't remember the title.

Have they no idea at all even what they think it might be ??

MrsMorgan - have you asked the GP whether they have considered diabetes?

I know your DS's symptoms are not typical but
it does say here that "Doctors should consider the possibility of diabetes in any child who has an otherwise unexplained history of illness or tummy pains for a few weeks".

My brother was diagnosed with diabetes type 1 when he was 12 years old. He has started to have strange bouts of being ill and was just not quite right IYSWIM. The GP should be able to test for this quite easily.

Can I also recommend that you weigh your DS and start weighing him every week and making a note. My brother lost weight before he was diagnosed and my Mum was that she hadn't noticed (but it was gradual).

Sorry you are going through a tough time .

MrsMorgan how are things going? Is your ds any better this week?

sunshineandshowers · 20/05/2010 20:55

Hello Mrs Morgan,

Have you thought about Irritable Bowel Syndrome? I have had IBS as a child AND Stonach Migraine. His symptoms sound similar to things I had. SOme thoughts...he always seems to vomit late in the day/at night. I always did this when I had a SM. The way you describe him recovering instantly when he has vomited is how I would describe it as well, it was always a relief.

Diarrohea is really common with IBS.

I ahd both these things ( I think) because of anxiety. I was a big worrier and the worry came out in tension illness. The things that helped ME with SM were a drug called Pizotifen ( which I havn't taken for a while) and when I felt the pain coming on I would drink loads of milk, take gaviscon and paracetamol. Normally stopped the pain/vomiting. I havn't had the IBS for a while, but when I was a child I took Colofac (I think!).

Has he had a very unsettled time recently, try to look at the whole thing in context. Did something happen before all these episodes? If he might not open up to you is there a trused sibling/teacher?

I hope this helps and does not worry you. x

VengefulKitty · 21/05/2010 09:41

Mrs M - sorry, I missed your question to me before.

GP didn't suggest anything!!! Just that they were probably stress related and that as he doesn't have the nausea and vomiting he just has to ride it through with calpol and nurofen

Hope your DS is doing OK... any progress with the medics yet?

MrsMorgan · 21/05/2010 14:10

Hello, sorry I've not posted an update earlier.

Well fingers crossed, ds seems to be ok at the moment. I am still keeping a diary, but we have had no further episodes of anything. Have drilled into him today that he must wear his hat in the sun and drink lots, so not to get a headache. Sent his stool sample off on Wednesday, so can ring Monday to see if anything was picked up in that.

I am thinking now that at least one of the episodes was a bug because dd2 also ended up being very sick on Tuesday.

Don't think it is diabetes because he had his blood sugar checked in a&e.

Sunshine - I also have IBS so will definately keep that in mind as a possibility.
