DD (3.6) woke up today with what seemed like a cold, but then was sick everywhere and her temp shot up, was 38.6C, gave calpol and 90 mins later it was 39C, agve Calprofen and called NHS24 (Scotland)..who were concerned, as she seems really ill, and are sending a taxi to take her to out of hours GP.

Normally DH could drive us but of course he is at the Scottish Cup Final in Glasgow.

Am so stressed out.

Last time she had this it was a nasty ear infection, she just seems so unwell...

Taxi due in 20 mins, I got mixed up and was ready 30 mins early, so she has her coat on, is probably too hot now.

Oh yes, food and drinks, crayons and paper in case she perks up?
change of clothes in case she pukes and a clean top for you...

EccentricaGallumbits · 15/05/2010 16:15

would now be a hideously innapropriate time to tell you that I don't own a thermometer? DD1 had a high temperature once when she was 3 and DD2 has never had one.

plenty of other stuff wrong with them but never high temps. would scare me crapless if they did suddenly.

EccentricaGallumbits · 15/05/2010 16:16

excellent.
Hope you get seen quickly and DD feels better soon.

mumbar · 15/05/2010 16:21

hope all goes ok let us know

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 15/05/2010 17:31

just home..she didn't perk up, which was worrying, but she had a temp of 39C there so not surprised. No obvious cause, just has runny nose. Was given antibiotics anyway but the Dr said if her temp is still not coming down after the calpol she gave her there, I am to take her to A and E in the next hour...wish they'd just sent me there in the first place. Anyway it's come down to 38, she took her antibiotics. She still looks really flushed and ill though. DH is going to come home, i can see us maybe ending up at A and E later.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 15/05/2010 17:42

now I don't know what to do, as she is still just lying there, but temp is down, was told to take her to A and E if temp didn't come down or she didn't perk up. Maybe will see if she will have a short sleep and see how she is then.

If DH was here we'd just jump in the car.

OP posts:
EccentricaGallumbits · 15/05/2010 18:11

good plan - let her have a sleep then see if her temp is still down and if she is any perkier.

mumbar · 15/05/2010 18:17

I'm always a beleiver in mum knows best if your worried I'd take her. Hope she perks up soon tho.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 15/05/2010 18:30

she has now perked up a bit, hoping her temp stays down. Thanks all.

mumbar · 15/05/2010 19:10

oh fanjo really want to give you a hug right now my heart goes out to you. Do you want to take her to a and e?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 15/05/2010 19:17

Thanks. DH is home, at least. Temp back to 38.8C. Have given her some Calprofen. Will take her if not better soon

OP posts:
fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 15/05/2010 19:18

my feeling is they won't do anything different at A and E so will hold off unless she gets worse.

Did they check her throat and ears? Presume they did, but you never know.

Have they dip-tested her urine? UTI maybe?

lou031205 · 15/05/2010 19:29

Fanjo please take her. Better safe than sorry x

she had some calprofen and is now in a deep sound sleep so might hold off for now.

They checked her throat and ears which were OK.

Didn't test her urine..she has SN and isn't toilet trained yet. Her nappy DID smell very strong actually so a UTI has crossed my mind. She has had a dose of antibiotics so they should help.

Will see how she is when/if she wakes up and take her if still really bad.

I know it's worrying when they have a fever but a fever is a sign that the body is working really hard to get rid of a bug. Now that's good but it does tend to make them very lethargic - all effort is going to the immune system.

DS had a temp of over 39 for three days once. He was fine afterwards, just tired for a few days more. Try not to worry too much. I know it's scary but she'll probably be bouncing around by the morning (and then you'll get it!)

ShowOfHands · 15/05/2010 19:42

Is she drinking plenty when awake? DD was similarly unwell, not responding to meds, A&E late at night. It was a UTI. Assuming it is a broad spectrum antibiotic it should help if that's the case. But if they can confirm it, there are better antibiotics for UTIs than the broad spectrum ones.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 15/05/2010 19:46

She isn't drinking that much. It is amoxicillin she is on. I probably wouldn't worry so much, but the Dr was worried because of her possible metabolic disorder too.

She has terrible cold symptoms, maybe a coincidence as well as a UTI I suppose. Am starting to wonder if she has flu TBH, not swine flu as she has had the vaccination!!!

I hope I don't get it, am on antibiotics myself for bronchitis (I don't think she has caught that, I never had a runny nose or fever, just a cough).

hope she feels better soon Fanjo, we often end up in A&E with dd2, when she gets ill she seems to get really ill) quite often its with a high temp which leads to her being sick and then refusing to drink, she usually perks up after a few hours on the children's ward but it does scare me as she is unable to tell me how she's feeling and whats hurting. Last time she was ill it turned out to be scarlet fever which took almost 7 days to diagnose.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 15/05/2010 20:04

I think that's it too marne, she can't tell me what is wrong, just whimpers

OP posts:
fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 16/05/2010 07:44

phew, she woke in night wanting to play and is now pretty chirpy this morning and temp down..think antibiotics must be helping!!
