DS has Itchy Bottom - anyone know much about this?

DS son woke tonight really crying complaining his bottom inside was itchy. This has happened a few times.

Ive checked each time and catn see any thread worms etc...

The only thing I can think of is that he still wears Hugglies PJ pants at night as still not dry (nearly 5)- so wondering if he's hot in them and the heat is making him sweaty/hot and itcy perhaps??? If so I can take them off as he is nowhere near dry . I have taken his pj bottoms off tonigt though.

Do you think I shoudl go to Dr's???

It's probably worms, even if you can't see them. I'd try treating for worms first and see what happens - remember you need to treat everyone in the family

agree, probably worms, ds1 had them and i never spotted any but the symptoms matched and once he was treated the itching stopped

ScottishBoris · 17/01/2010 22:01

Sounds like threadworms to me. DD1 has had them twice (grrr). Nurse at docs advised ice-cubes in a tea towel applied to the bum hole (sorry) to numb the pain then put some vaseline on liberally until you can get the treatment tomorrow. Keep pants on him, in case the little suckers come out and play later. It's horrible for the kids, dd1 was in tears, she was in agony.

Hope your wee guy feels better soon.

SixtyFootDoll · 17/01/2010 22:02

Agree with above.
My son was going mad itching.
I couldnt see anyhtinf on his bum, but he had seen them in the loo..

RonNumber · 17/01/2010 22:03

yes agony here too

ScottishBoris · 17/01/2010 22:03

and you'll need to wash all bedding and pjs etc. daily for about a week to get rid of the eggs.

SixtyFootDoll · 17/01/2010 22:05

and treat whole family - delightful!

Clary · 17/01/2010 22:06

And damp dust all rooms, esp bedrooms, daily

Clary · 17/01/2010 22:07

btw to check you need to go up there when he is asleep, with a torch, and look... if they are there it's like Alien

salvolatile · 17/01/2010 22:10

Threadworms . Just get tablet from chemist in morning (Ovex is one) and treat everyone. Wash his bedding and PJs on a hot wash and trim his nails. If he is really bad you can give him a second tablet in a fortnight. Don't worry, it happens to everyone

NonVinaigretteRien · 17/01/2010 22:14

medicine can take 24 hours to work. So DS had his on the Saturday morning, and the Saturday night was still uncomfortable. Sunday night was fine though.

dietqueen · 17/01/2010 22:14

OMG sounds like its very common then.

Another thing I thought of was that he's drank alot of fresh juice over weekend and pooed alot so not sure if his bottom is sore from acid from juice perhaps?

IS it best to just pop along to Dr's for a perscription or are the tablets very expensive?

Neither myself or hubby are itching?

Deffo take the follow up dose 2 weeks later.

that's the hatching time for the little bleeders, from eggs to worms, so you'll catch any new ones.

NonVinaigretteRien · 17/01/2010 22:16

Treat all of you, not worth risking it.

You can get them over the counter, can't remember how much they cost. less than a prescription though.

lucykate · 17/01/2010 22:17

ds had worms last year, as well as the daily washing of pj's, bedding, bin any sponges and use flannels at bathtime that can be washed. wipe round the bottom with a wet wipe in the morning (they pop out overnight and lay eggs, a wipe gets rid of the eggs and helps prevent re-infestation). also, get him to wash his hands before eating.

my ds is a nailbiter, so as a precaution, he wears pants at night now under his pj's, in case he gets them again, hopefully the pants will have helped minimise the spread of any eggs.

worms are horrid, but no need to go to the gp, you can get a family pack of ovex from most pharmacies.

gaelicsheep · 17/01/2010 22:26

Dietqueen - interesting thread as DS has been complaining of itchy bottom today and yesterday and I was wondering about worms (god forbid).

It's interesting what you said about the fruit juice and pooing though. DS has been eating at least two clementines each day the last couple of days, plus grapes, apple etc. despite my warning it'll give him a sore tummy. He's also been pooing loads and I'm also suspicious that that's why he's sore and itchy.

I'll be very interested to hear the outcome of this one.

Clary · 17/01/2010 22:30

I never heard of eating oranges, grapes and apples giving you sore bottom. If it did I would have it on a daily basis!

You all need to go and do the torch thing NOW!

dietqueen · 17/01/2010 22:34

fruit/fresh juice seems to go straight through ds ie makes him poo lots and its quite soft/acidic (sorry to be sooo graphic) so today he's had 2 soft poos quite yellowy making his bottom sore.

I'll check when I go up as if he wakes I can just get in and get him back off - have stacks to do tonight still

gaelicsheep · 17/01/2010 22:34

Too much might though, don't you think, if it's making you go to the loo constantly?

Clary · 17/01/2010 22:36

well yes, maybe.

I know when people see how much fruit I eat they always say that.

(I make this face but maybe I'm lucky! (iron stomach I reckon)

NotAnOtter · 17/01/2010 22:37

you have to LOOK ...no really look...

gaelicsheep · 17/01/2010 22:40

dietqueen · 17/01/2010 22:43
