Do girls continue to row after their periods start?

I think my dd is starting puberty - she's starting to get sweaty, some spots ad she definitely moody. I've read somewhere that once her periods start she will stop growing. Is this true cos although she's tall at the moment it wouldn't be considered tall enough for an adult.

No, they can definitely keep growing after they start their periods. Some girls start as early as 9 these days and you're not finished growing until you are about 21.

cyteen · 13/01/2010 23:35

IME rowing is likely to increase once periods have started

Sorry couldn't resist it.

oh cyteen - I'm so glad you've already posted that - as I have to confess that was my first through and that was what I clicked on the link to post .

Mercedes · 14/01/2010 02:12

Girls stop growing at 18, boys at 21.

Jacksmama · 14/01/2010 02:32

Girls do not stop growing at 18. I grew an inch while at university. Besides, the cartilaginous growth plates in the femora, tibiae and vertebrae do not fuse until 19/20 or even later in either sex. Once the growth plates close, growth in vertical height stops.

solo · 14/01/2010 02:38

That's what I was always told JM. They definitely don't stop at puberty though.

foxytocin · 14/01/2010 03:11

unfortunate typo there OP> I concur. they deffo don't stop rowing.

Jacksmama · 14/01/2010 15:02

No, for sure they don't stop growing at puberty. But either sex has the potential for vertical growth until the growth plates fuse, for and for some that's later than others.

ImSoNotTelling · 14/01/2010 15:16

@ rowing!

duchesse · 14/01/2010 15:19

Jacksmama- so did I! (grow an inch at university I mean) A friend grew even more than that (but she was 17 when she started university in fairness).

thedollshouse · 14/01/2010 15:23

In my family this seems to be the case. I stopped growing (height wise) a year before my periods started, at 11 I was the tallest girl in my class at primary and by the time I reached the end of senior school I was the shortest. The boys in my family tend to have a growth spurt around the age of 16.

ShowOfHands · 14/01/2010 15:26

I grew an inch at university too. The doc said that in his experience a woman is finished growing usually by 21 but sometimes not until 23.

duchesse · 14/01/2010 15:42

dollshouse- my brother grew a foot between 16 and 17. He went from being the smallest tiddler in his class at 5ft1 to being 6ft1 in one academic year. I think my mother was quite glad he was at boarding school so she didn't have to feed him. Am intrigued to see what my son does- he's 16 and appears to have just started growing judging by the more frequent lie-ins and constant need for snacks between meals; he's already taller than my husband which is worrying my husband a little. (well, not really, but you know what I mean).

solo · 14/01/2010 17:15

My 11.5yo Ds is 5'6" already and taller than my Mum. Not sure what'll happen when he starts his periods though!

thedollshouse · 14/01/2010 17:49

My goodness duchesse a foot in a year!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 14/01/2010 17:51

I read that as rowing - you know up and down the Thames! God I am weird

Jacksmama · 14/01/2010 18:20

One of the best typos in a while, methinks

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 14/01/2010 18:56

Boys generally stop growing later than girls.

Even after the growth plates in the long bones close (my dd's closed at 15 which is average for a girl) you still achieve further growth through the spine. It's not an exact science but there's definitely a growth spurt around the time of puberty.

Hullygully · 14/01/2010 18:58

Oh, I thought you meant in a boat. Wanted to say their interest in cox took a whole new direction. But won't now.

I stopped growing when my periods started at 11...........going quickly from the tallest in the class to the shortest.

But then grew 1/2 inch (yes it was a VERY important 1/2 inch it took me from 4ft 11 1/2 inches to 5ft ) at some point between 18 1/2yrs and 21yrs old.

cory · 15/01/2010 16:41

Good heavens no; dd's period started at 10 and she was still a little girl then. She has grown a good 3 inches since.

bruffin · 15/01/2010 16:52

I thought girls continued growing for 2 years after their periods start.

DD 21 started nearly a year ago and has grown a good few inches since then and is now taller than me.
