Chicken Pox & spots in the nether regions

Dillie · 07/01/2010 11:03

My poor 4 1/2 year old is off with chicken pox. She seems to be coping ok(ish) so long as I keep up with the calpol & calamine lotion.

THe only thing is she has a few spots in her nether regions 1 on her front bit, 1 inside her labia (sp?) and one near her perenium. They look incredibley sore and she cries whenever she needs a wee. She now keeps going to the toilet saying she needs a poo, but never does anything and she says it hurts too much. The thing is that I am worried about is her hanging on to it and causing more problems! She had a poo yesterday, so she is not constipated just yet at least!

She says her tummy hurts but i am wondering if her glands her up, as the pain is in the middle.

I am making sure she has a bit of dried fruit to keep everything soft but running out of ideas on how to convience her thats its ok to have a poo.

Is there anything i can put on these spots to help her? i am putting sudacrem on, but doesnt seem to ease the pain.

We've had this all over the christmas period so you have my sympathy. Ds2 is still suffering even though he is crusted over. We found piriton and aqueous calamine cream to work well. Also baths with either bicarb in or oats (put them in a leg of an old pair of tights and tie it to the tap so water runs through) helped alot. If se gets any worse ring the doc. Dd's got into her eyes and throat and the go gave her eye drops and anti viral medicine (aclovoir) which was amazing.

*gp not go!

Dillie · 07/01/2010 11:10

Aww it is awful when they are sick isnt it?

How much bicarb to put in the bath?

I hope your ds2 feels better soon

Was going to suggest like ledodgy calamine cream, 2 of my dcs had this, one was in nappies and it made them 100x worse

I smothered their bums in it, and bathed them in dettol

weegiemum · 07/01/2010 11:12

I would second the bicarb in a warm bath tip - my ds got CP while he was still in nappies and had spots all over his bum and everything else down there.

He spent a lot of time in the bath (he was just 1, so loved it!!). I also put a couple of drops of tea tree in as an antiseptic and I think that helped.

And just try to keep her regular - but you know that! Pure orange juice used to work really well for mine, and they loved it.

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 07/01/2010 11:12

I put loads of bicarb in just pour a decent amount in. Luckily I had loads left over from the pile I bought for last years Christmas vomiting bug to get the smell out fo the carpets. I am hoping this Christmas we will all be well!

Also may be worth ringing the dr and getting some lactulose medicine to soften her stools so it is less painful for her when they come out.

mloo · 07/01/2010 11:12

Piriton syrup, works from the inside. Best thing ever.

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 07/01/2010 11:17

Oh yeah and remember not to put the nicest bed covers on the beds. The day ds started with spots I had just put a brand new cocolate brown duvet cover and sheets on our bed. He spent most of his time in there. It is now covered in grease spots due to the cream that I cannot get out!

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 07/01/2010 11:18

Deffo get the calomine cream instead of the lotion, the lotion only works until it dries ten makes it worse imo. The cream is cooling and soothing for a good while.

Dillie · 07/01/2010 11:27

Great thanks for your tips At least she has it now, and not later on. The only thing is her timing is lousy, she was supposed to start school this week lol!!!

Oh yeap bicarb in the bath soothed my dd too, then I ran out and used dettol,
hope they get better soon,
you have my sympathies my dd couldn't sleep or wear her nappies so she was sitting on a towel all the time and even tried the potty,
she kept feeling like she needed to go too, its probably the irritation making her think she needs to go and she might not

SaucyMoo · 07/01/2010 11:53

I just logged on to mumsnet to start a post about the same thing. my 1.5 year old dd has lots and lots of spots in her nappy area..at the top inbetween, on her bottom! and last night she cried and cried from 9pm til about 2am...she just couldnt get to sleep..i took her nappy off from time to time and kept smothering with cream..it looks so sore. gave piriton, calpol and calmomine cream...shes soo irritable. My mother in law wont let me bathe her for first 7-8 days. its day 3 at the mo..but everyone here is saying bathing helps..so dont know what to do!

everyone keeps telling me, the younger they are the better..but thats simply not true as my 3 yr old had it 2 weeks ago and he coped with it beautifully!
dillie-good luck

PheasantPlucker · 07/01/2010 11:58

My dd had Chicken pox last easter. She has cerebral palsy, amongst other things, and wears nappies. We tried the calamine cream which was good, plus the baths as suggested. Also piriton liquid, which helped. Unfortunately she had so many spots that the nappy area got infected, and she ended up having an antibiotic cream prescribed.

It was not a good few weeks! Hope your dc are better soon.

alypaly · 07/01/2010 12:00

when they get bad chicken pox it actually can affect the whole of the alimentary canal ,from mouth to bottom and willy or vagina. They actually get the same spots inside the mucus membranes. My DS1 had it so badly that his willy swelled up to twice the size and he was just screaming with the pain. There is not much you can do with the ones on mucus membranes in mouth or down below other than calpol.

The other thing you can try is Aveeno oatmeal sachets in the bath and if you cant get hold of them just put some oatmeal in a muslin bag and put it in the bath water

weegiemum · 07/01/2010 12:01

SaucyMoo - don't listen to your MIL! Its not up to her to "let" you bathe your children!!

Bicarb baths are fantastic for CP itches - my Gran gave me the idea when dd1 got it 6 years ago!

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 07/01/2010 12:02

I agree Saucy they need to be bathed not only because it ooths them but it also helps keep them clean and prevent infection!

alypaly · 07/01/2010 12:04

bathing does help especially with the oatmeal...its soothing anyway

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 07/01/2010 12:06

If it gets as bad as Alypaly mentions deffo get antivirals from the dr. I was suprised when they gave them to dd because everywhere I read says they are only good in the first 24 hrs or so. Dd was on day 4 but they really helped they even shrunk her spots.

alypaly · 07/01/2010 12:13

we werent offered any anti virals for chicken pox...didnt know there were any!

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 07/01/2010 12:15

Yes it's the same ones you get for cold sores. Some wont offer them because they are v. expensive about £70 a time I think. My dr is fab though I get a course once a year to prevent cold sores and they gave dd the liquid version for her pox as they had gone to her eye and throat. He said once the spots get bad on the face or around/in the mouth they give the anti virals as it is a sign it can progress to the lungs which is nasty.

SaucyMoo · 07/01/2010 12:16

well she keeps insisting that water can get in the spots and can get infected but im obviously washing her down there every morning and when she does a poo anyway and thats the most effected area..will try bicarb..thanks everyone

alypaly · 07/01/2010 12:22

its ok ,i think my brain has been frozen last night...they use zovirax....(aciclovir to treat very bad cases) But it not used routinely....Should have remembered that as i have worked as a pharmacy dispenser for 35 years. I have only ever dispensed it twice in that time for chicken pox tho....probably why i had brain fade

maxybrown · 07/01/2010 14:13

NO saucymoo - how can water infect her? Don't put any soap in or anything. When I nannied the LO had it really bad in nappy area, he was in bicarb baths all the time, not only did it make him feel better, it took his mind off it, playing in the bath!!

Dillie · 07/01/2010 20:42

Well she is finally asleep. Calpol + piriton + camaline cream managed a no2 without too much drama. So I think she is a little more comfortable.

she has about half a dozen spots on her bits, 2 have blisterd, so hopefully they will be gone in the next 24-36 hours.

Thanks so much for your posts

My DD has chicken pox at the moment and was in so much pain I took her to the GP, who said she also had thrush--so we are alternating antibiotic cream and thrush cream. I'd like to do the bicarb bath but am not clear how much bicarb to add to the water?
