Stupidly gave DS Ribena carton of juice today...

and he's two and a half yo. I feel like such an idiot..has anyone else done this by accident? it happened when out at a cafe today, and I bought it for him absent-mindedly even though I would never give him Ribena normally (it says not recommended for the under 3's).

Is there any lasting damage or am I being daft? Please reassure me because I'm sick with worry about this.

I'm putting pg hormones down to my utter stupidness of not thinking today.

he'll be fine - stop worrying.
If you'd given him a whole bottle undiluted, you might have reason to be a bit concerned for the welfare of his teeth, but a one-off carton won't do any harm. Relax!

CybilLiberty · 18/11/2009 23:46

You are being completely and utterly daft

LowLevelWhingeing · 18/11/2009 23:48

it's ribena, not crack! He'll be fine

TheCrackFox · 18/11/2009 23:48

Why is it not recommended for under 3s? I am bemused.

displayuntilbestbefore · 18/11/2009 23:49

concentrated sugar content I think

lovechoc · 18/11/2009 23:49

thanks cybilliberty and displayuntilbestbefore for telling it straight it's what I needed to hear. phew. Beginning to wonder if I'm losing too many brain cells already! lol.

is that basically the only reason they are not allowed to drink Ribena under 3 years, because of the tooth decay thing?

OP posts:
displayuntilbestbefore · 18/11/2009 23:50

plus some people might give it to toddlers in a beaker with spout

CybilLiberty · 18/11/2009 23:50

Yes but you would need to be giving it in a bottle round the clock.

shonaspurtle · 18/11/2009 23:51

I've done this before. I always presumed that it was the whole ribena-in-bottle-rotting-teeth thing (and it is incredibly sweet, not sure why they have to make the cartons so concentrated), and not fretted about the very odd carton when nothing else was available.

displayuntilbestbefore · 18/11/2009 23:51

yes, I'm pretty sure it's the tooth decay aspect - especially if it's given in a baby's bottle or toddler beaker because then the child is having a sugary drink constantly being sucked on during a period of time

lovechoc · 18/11/2009 23:52

he normally only drinks fresh orange/apple watered right down so I'm sure he really savoured the carton of juice today! it must have been heaven for him.

thanks again. am off to bed now. knackered!

shonaspurtle - I agree, why DO they make the readymixed cartons so damn strong?!

displayuntilbestbefore · 18/11/2009 23:53

relax lovechoc - get your head down and think no more about it! night.

swanriver · 18/11/2009 23:54

it's just to stop mothers giving it at every meal...and teeth rotting as a result.
It's no worse than giving your child a sugar laced yoghurt, a piece of chocolate cake or a icelolly , which um..I am sure you have done [haven't you? or is this not on either?)
IMO those sugar free squashes are far worse.

redsofas · 18/11/2009 23:55

is this a joke? its nothing to worry about really

AnnieLobeseder · 18/11/2009 23:57

You're stressed about one drink of Ribena?! Please calm down, I promise there will be no lasting damage!

lovechoc · 19/11/2009 10:57

thanks everyone. I managed to sleep so much better last night after some of your responses. You've made me realise how daft I've been! DH wasn't helping though, he said he didn't know if it would do any harm or not. He says there are high levels of vit C in the drink and maybe it has done some damage. Not helping

Anyway you have all reassured me it's nothing to worry about. Yes, swanriver we are the same here, and don't buy drinks with 'no added sugar'. tend to look out for the sugary ones but that gets limited to now and again.

He gets ice cream and choc just like the next child his age. I wouldn't deprive him of it, because I know that as soon as he goes to school he'll be right at the tuck shop buying sweets anyway behind my back! Don't they all do that?

Good grief now I've heard it all.

This is a classic PFB scenario. With a subsequent child you'll just go "oh b*gger", shrug, think "he'll be fine" and forget about it.

Pretty much all of us have done similar stuff.

lovechoc · 19/11/2009 12:58

You're probably right soupdragon. I've just got the one just now, doubt I'll have time to worry over such matters when no2 comes along next year!

and tell your dh to bog off, he's talking shite and Not Helping.

lovechoc · 19/11/2009 13:07

I know aitch talk about make a bad situation worse - and I wonder why am anxious sometimes over trivial stuff!! He said 'what do you want me to say? that everything's going to be fine when I'm not sure it's not going to be?' Men...

LadyOfTheFlowers · 19/11/2009 13:10

Jesus.

Would have thought if it would actually 'damage' a child it would carry a huge health warning on the front.

AitchTwoToTangOh · 19/11/2009 13:12

lol if that's the sort of thing he says i swear to god i just wouldn't ask him again. really, it's just a carton of strong juice, no harm done so long as his teeth were brushed at night. it's part of the rich tapestry of life, ribena and all...
