Ds2 is 8 and has been asleep on me for about an hour. Also off his food, hardly eating any birthday cake. Snoring atm.

Flu, virus or something else?

it doesn't matter whether its a virus or something else. The important thing right now is controlling his temp.

TripleTroubleMuffin · 13/06/2009 17:50

A child I nannied for had a febrile convulsion completely unexpectedly and I still remember the panic I felt.

OP posts:
kitkatqueen · 13/06/2009 17:50

17.40 would be 40mins since calpol was given

temp should have begun to drop by then

TripleTroubleMuffin · 13/06/2009 17:51

DH just taking temp.

OP posts:
TripleTroubleMuffin · 13/06/2009 17:51

39.4

As long as temp is brought down it should not happen.

Whats his temp now? i'm going by mumsnet time btw based on the time of your post which said u had given calpol 10 mins b4...

TripleTroubleMuffin · 13/06/2009 17:52

he is still asking for crisps but I am thinking toast or cereal.

OP posts:
kitkatqueen · 13/06/2009 17:54

I would say toast if anything, and big drink of cold water.

personally i would be ringing gp out of hours - temp should have dropped more than that, in that time with calpol.

TripleTroubleMuffin · 13/06/2009 17:55

I will let him eat then take temp again.

OP posts:
kitkatqueen · 13/06/2009 17:58

seems a reasonable plan - if its still not below 38 I can only reccommend ringing gp. There are lots of causes for sudden high temp inc wee infection, virus, bacterial infection etc. If the temp isn't coming down its worth getting it checked out. If he wants to do a wee I would catch some to be checked as it might save u a lot of time later.

Test one there, wouldn't let me post.

Dh said it was 5.20 he had calpol and at 6.10 his temp was 39.

TTM, there's been a bit of high-temp-bug at dd's school (no idea if its swine flu or not, because no one gets tested - how they'd know I have no idea!) which lasts about 3-5 days. If he's asking for food, thats a good sign, IMO....though agree with trying to get temp down to 38ish: I would definitely give Nurofen at this point, have found it far more effective in getting temps down and lasts longer than paracetamol.

Do you have any? Or can one of you nip out to get some?

TripleTroubleMuffin · 13/06/2009 19:05

I am sure we have some but DS is asleep now.

I think he has a cold and is shattered and his temperature could be part of that.

So happy to hear him snoring as sleep is the best thing for him. He just hasn't had enough this week with his brother...

OP posts:
Elibean · 13/06/2009 19:12

Sleep is good

I would check his temp while asleep (if you have an ear thermometer, its pretty easy) and if its hovering near 40 again, I would wake him up for Nurofen - otherwise, as you say, let him sleep!

Hope he's better, and that you have a reasonable night.

TripleTroubleMuffin · 13/06/2009 19:14

Thank you.

Will keep checking on him.

Hopefully his DB won't have him up before 6.

I know the problem - poor dd1 has shadows under her eyes as her little sister wakes with the dawn.

She's not alone, either

alibobins · 13/06/2009 19:52

Dd was like this on Wednesday temp of 40 feeling cold and dizzy woke up Thursday with swollen tonsils so took her to docs and it was tonsilitis
He said he'd seen alot of children with the same this week.
Def try and get some nurofen into him.

TripleTroubleMuffin · 13/06/2009 19:58

DS is asleep still and his temp is 36.5.

OP posts:
alibobins · 13/06/2009 20:00

Hope it stays that way

Elibean · 13/06/2009 20:14

Thats great, TTM

Ali, dd had tonsillitis, ugh. hope all well now.

alibobins · 13/06/2009 20:22

Yeah she's getting better

TripleTroubleMuffin · 13/06/2009 22:08

Thanks all for being there.

Feel a bit daft that I may have over reacted. had a bit of a tiff with Dh as well.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/06/2009 22:13

don't feel daft. It is horrible when they arent well and you don't quite know why. i hope you all have a good restful night and all is well tomorrow.

TripleTroubleMuffin · 13/06/2009 22:14

Thank you.

I have secret worries about DS1 and tend to panic when he is ill. I am very lucky that my children are rarely ill but when they are I get a bit scared.
