3.5 year old vomitting, temp spiking, pin prick rash. Just a virus? Sit tight and wait for it to pass?

DD 3.5 had a very disrupted nights sleep and vomitted about 3 times on Thursday morning. She was ill, sleepy and spiking a high temperature all through the day which we kept under control with calpol and nurofen double dosing. She uncomfortably hot to touch when the meds are wearing off. She's also covered in a red rash on her back and stomach and in particular on her cheeks.

She didn't vomit again all day or last night so we thought the worst had passed. Even though last night was hellish as she didn't sleep much, she has eaten a bit of lunch and tea tonight, but has just woken and vomitted everywhere again (at 9pm tonight).

I know I know I know that this is just one of those viruses, but I just need someone to reassure me that I don't need to take her to the docs with this.

Anyone gone through similar? Feeling a helpless just watching her go through it all.

Hey DHW. Work have given me afternoon off so I'm heading home soon to lift the burden from DH and hopefully to allow DS (the puppy) to get out for a proper run around.

DD still lolling around and had very broken night again but she ate half a tesco shake and make lovingly home made American style pancake this morning so things must be looking up.

Hope so - had booked day off work this Friday to take her to Tiger That Came To Tea at theatre and all round mother daughter bonding stuff

I expect you are on your way back but, if you get this, hope you have a good afternoon.

Any calories you can get in dd will be good, doesn't matter where they come from

Sycamoretree · 28/04/2009 15:41

DD perked up MASSIVELY. Playing with playdoh now and actually wants a hug (to be touched!) massive improvement. x

We've got scarlet fever outbreak here - kent.

BlueBumedFly · 28/04/2009 19:44

Sycamoretree - great news!! I hope she goes from strength to strength now and you can all get some recovery time.

I am guessing there is no immunisation for scarlet fever.... hmmmmm, I think this should explained better to parents, I would never have thought of Scarlet Fever.

Sycamoretree · 28/04/2009 20:01

I didn't think it actually even existed anymore...

But thanks - I'm ridiculously happy to see her smiling today - even if she did through a complete strop that I wouldn't let her come to the park with DS on her scooter . Had to get him out and she had to stay home with DH. He's 19 months and has a lot of, erm, excess energy that needs burning up!

Apparently toddlers (under 3's) don't usually contract scarlet fever, so hopefully he'll escape it.

I am going to check the symptoms on NHS direct so I know what I am dealing with just in case, especially as it seems more common again now.

Glad she is well enough to throw a strop!

DesperateHousewifeToo · 28/04/2009 20:49

That's great news

Hope she is more settled tonight and you can get a better night's sleep.

DesperateHousewifeToo · 29/04/2009 13:19

Did you have a better night?

Any results from the dr yet?

Hope dd has continued to improve.

xx

Sycamoretree · 29/04/2009 13:52

No results yet - am hoping we do today. DD better, ate some breakfast but DH says she's a bit mopey and not interested in lunch. She is crotchey and rude at the moment - great! Still had a rough night with her but it was my turn with the ear plugs so I'm not too bad this morning.

The revolting medicine is a pain four times a day as we are having to come up with all kinds of creative entincements. If we try and get heavy about her taking it she becomes literally hysterical, chokes, spits etc.

So it has to be the softly softly approach. "Hey DD, maybe if you take this I will build you a land made of marshmallows and chocolate and you will be princess and rule over the entire land" etc etc type of ridiculousness .

Let's just say, the novelty of a bed on the sofa has well and truly worn out and she just wants to consider herself completely better and back at school etc. Good news is she is now past the stage of being able to infect anyone according to the Dr (24 hours after starting ab's) so at least if she's up to it DH can wheel them down to the park for a bit of fresh air.

Everything ok with your DC's? DD didn't get into B school btw .

crotchety, not crotchy! That just would not be ladylike!

DesperateHousewifeToo · 29/04/2009 21:55

Sorry you didn't get in to B School . I'm sure an occasional place will come in the future but no telling when.

Glad dd is perking up.

I guess no news on the diagnosis yet? Fascinated to know what it was she's had.

Sycamoretree · 30/04/2009 14:07

Me too! Am sure docs will call today - send swab off end of day Monday....she will run out of ab's on saturday so they have to have diagnosis before then to know whether to continue.

Will be on the text immediately after they call!

Sycamoretree · 30/04/2009 18:01

DHW - Doc's called. It WAS a strep A infection, which becomes scarlet fever in some kids, it apparently depends on the sensitivity of the child...I googled kidshealth.something and it seemed to say the same thing. In some kids it might just present as a sore throat, in others, they get the full rash, fever and vomitting and "strawberry tongue" that DD had - which is sf.

So, not sure what if anything to tell the school. Don't want to send alarm bells ringing but maybe I'll just relay exactly the above?

OP posts:
DesperateHousewifeToo · 30/04/2009 19:47

Ooh, glad you got the results. I'll be off to google again

I'd tell school that she had scarlet fever. I remember last term there was an article in the school news letter that said a few children had it.

Once you have told them, it is up to them to decide whether to tell the parents. All you can do is tell them.

So presumably she has to have the disgusting ab's for another 5 days? Poor little mite and poor you having to think of creative ways to get her to take them

Sycamoretree · 30/04/2009 20:37

Will call them in the morrow.

DD has become a big more resigned to taking them now, but yes, we have to pick up another 5 days tomorrow.

She says the flavour is cabbage, marshmallow, sugar, stinky cheese and caterpillar.

OP posts:
DesperateHousewifeToo · 30/04/2009 20:44

Such a sophisticated palate she has

BlueBumedFly · 30/04/2009 22:08

Ah caterpillar, a personal fave!
