3.5 year old vomitting, temp spiking, pin prick rash. Just a virus? Sit tight and wait for it to pass?

Sycamoretree · 24/04/2009 21:54

DD 3.5 had a very disrupted nights sleep and vomitted about 3 times on Thursday morning. She was ill, sleepy and spiking a high temperature all through the day which we kept under control with calpol and nurofen double dosing. She uncomfortably hot to touch when the meds are wearing off. She's also covered in a red rash on her back and stomach and in particular on her cheeks.

She didn't vomit again all day or last night so we thought the worst had passed. Even though last night was hellish as she didn't sleep much, she has eaten a bit of lunch and tea tonight, but has just woken and vomitted everywhere again (at 9pm tonight).

I know I know I know that this is just one of those viruses, but I just need someone to reassure me that I don't need to take her to the docs with this.

Anyone gone through similar? Feeling a helpless just watching her go through it all.

Poor dd. I would ring NHS direct, they will know how to talk you through it all so you can decide if you need to take her or not.

I'm assuming you did the glass test on her rash?

louii · 24/04/2009 22:04

Did you check the rash?

Phone NHS24 asap.

BlueBumedFly · 24/04/2009 22:04

I was just going to say the same as elibean, I would call nhs direct. Hope she gets better very soon xx

pavlovthepregnantcat · 24/04/2009 22:05

i personally would get her checked, i am not huge fan of NHS direct, as they always say go to hosp even if not the right course of action, although in this case it would not hurt to be reassured in A&E, but I would certainly call out of hours gp, who I feel are a bit more personal.

Sycamoretree · 24/04/2009 22:12

Called NHS direct and they are so busy at the moment that they say they will have to call back non urgent cases in 4 to 5 hours. Grrr.

I haven't done the glass test on her rash, but DH says it's showing white under pressure - she's sleeping at the moment so I don't want to disturb her to check.

She doesn't want to be touched. Poor love - she isn't scared of being sick but she tries to swallow it as it comes up and also yuck emoticon.

Do you have an out of hours instead? If you you ring your regular docs number they should list an out of hours? Bless her poorly pickle, it's so stressful eh?

Sycamoretree · 24/04/2009 22:29

I'll do that now Blue, thanks. I'm sure there's nothing they can do but it always seems so horrific in the midst of it all doesn't it?

our dd had roseola (?) a few week ago, burning hot temp, pin prick red spot rash, started round her eyes, then went mad across her front and back, she was sick on first night then for about 5 days had a n=mega temp and rash, its a virakl ibfection and sorts tself out, but try tinternetting 'roseola' it might be of help`?

BlueBumedFly · 24/04/2009 22:48

Good luck sycamore, hope you can get a doc for peace of mind, take care x

frasersmummy · 24/04/2009 22:54

sycamore you dont need to do the glass test as such

if your dh says it disappears under pressure then its not meningitis ... should clarify I am not a medical professional.. this is just what I was told by my gp

I would try to get to a nhs drop in gp centre tomorrow

why do kids always get these things at the weekend??

hope she is much better tomorrow

Sycamoretree · 25/04/2009 08:27

Hi Ladies,

Another gruesome night but this time DH on duty. DD up at 6.30am but is now back in bed sleeping. Poor DS is going stir crazy and of course, today when both DH and I are home, it's peeing with rain...

That's really interesting about Roseola - have googled it and it certainly sounds like the same thing. Hey ho - waiting it out with a truck of calpol and nurofen. Oh happy days!

BlueBumedFly · 25/04/2009 08:39

Poor you guys. Were you able to get an out of hours doc for today? We are in Berkshire and they are brilliant. DD only has ear infections at the weekend, they are booked in for midnight on a Friday I am sure of it!

Hope she improves soon and you can get poor DS out for a run around, even if it means donning him in rain mac and wellies!

Sycamoretree · 26/04/2009 21:50

Do you know, she is still vomiting and still spiking temp and slept for four hours across lunch today? Still has rash and has not eaten anything more than a mouthful of cheerios and a slurp of vanilla icecream in what feels like days. She won't be touched when she is waking hysterical and hot - I feel so bloody helpless!

I spoke to NHS direct and they said give piriton syrup for the itchy rash and alternate calpol and nurofen as I've been doing every 3 hours. They said I need to wait until tomorrow, day 5, to see if she makes a significant improvement - apparently that's about the time one should expect this kind of virus to last. I'm so very very tired. Thank goodness for the good weather so DS has been able to make the most of the paddling pool and sandpit.

Fingers crossed she turns a corner tonight. Not sure I can take much more.

My goodness syc you must be worried sick. Can you get her straight to the doc in the am? Could it be the high temp making her vomit? How are her hydration levels ?

Sycamoretree · 27/04/2009 13:47

I've had to come to work today and leave her with DH. She woke early and wanted yoghurt - of course, the only thing I didn't flipping well have. Went out to get some but she'd fallen asleep by the time I got back and so I had to come to work and DH said she only woke again at midday. Apparently her temperature isn't too bad now, and she hasn't had any nurofen since midnight last night - am about to call home and see if she's eaten anything yet. Am leaving it to DH's judgement to take her to the docs or not.

Am just reading all about bloody swine flu now and making myself ridiculously worried.

She is drinking enough I think. Sometimes she wants milk, but mostly just water. She drank a whole cup of milk before bed last night. Ask me to go out for chips but then said she only wanted them when she was better. Was happy to play with her chip fork for a while though .

Thanks for coming back to the thread . It's awful being away from her.

yousaidit are you in the London area? Am just interested in whether Roseola is going round my local are. Reading more about it, it seems so identical to her symptoms. It's the rash that is so distinctive about what she's going through. I've never really seen it before.

Sycamoretree · 27/04/2009 14:26

Have got an appt at docs at 5.20pm. Apparently she's eaten a couple of spoons of porridge at lunchtime but that's it. Could hear her groaning in the background when I call home.

DesperateHousewifeToo · 27/04/2009 14:53

Hi Syc'tree. Poor little dd. As far as I know, no others off from nursery.

A couple were off at the end of last week too but dd reports they are back today.

Does it give incubation period for roseola? Strange that the rest of you are ok, if exhausted.

According to k, e's mum (I texted her to see if scarlet fever still doing rounds but that was apparently last Oct!), there is a flu-like virus with tiredness and a gastric symptoms going around- which does not sound that similar to your dd's.

Fingers crossed you don't all get it

Let me know if you need anything.

xx

Sycamoretree · 27/04/2009 15:03

Hi DHW. Apparently it's only contagious before the symptoms present - so I'm hoping we've all escaped it. Is passed on through saliva and sneezing etc. Normally only kids get it.

My mum was ill too, but the last time she had contact with DC's was 10 days before DD got ill - and mum was pretty much better by that point anyway. Have just googled incubation period and christ, it's 10-15 days from infection so looks like I shouldn't get my hopes up about DS not going down the same route...

So exhausting - DH hasn't been able to work for a month because of sickness with mum and also DD. Feeling the flipping financial pinch of all this illness - flipping freelancing!

OP posts:
DesperateHousewifeToo · 27/04/2009 15:14

It's the lack of sleep that gets to us, isn't it?

Do you think your mum had the same thing? The dates would tally wouldn't they?

She could equally have picked it up in the park or supermarket, of course.

Sycamoretree · 27/04/2009 15:17

I've no idea really, but I guess it's more likely it's something she picked up during the Easter hols, especially if no one else in her class is ill. Probably got it at snakes and bloody ladders!

Mum was so ill that she couldn't make the drive back from her mums in Newcastle...so she had to stop halfway and hole up in a hotel for a couple of days!

OP posts:
Sycamoretree · 27/04/2009 19:43

Got back from Dr's earlier - the lovely doctor whose practice it is DHW - the top guy, thank goodness - he is so lovely and brilliant.

Anyway, he's pretty sure it's scarlet fever so has swabbed her throat and given us a course of antibiotics. She needs to take for 5 days and if results come back positive, she'll need to take another 5 days.

Sigh. I feel terrible not to have taken her sooner to the docs but described all the symptoms to NHS direct and they didn't think I needed to. So strange as looking up the symptoms, including itching rash, it seems like textbook scarlet fever - especially because it's so prolonged.

Hey ho. Better call the school once I get confirmed results do you think? They'll want to know I'd imagine.

OP posts:
DesperateHousewifeToo · 27/04/2009 19:59

I guess it is better to know what it is, at least stops self from saying ''I told you so''

Yes, probably a good idea to let the school know (once it's confirmed, as you say). That way, if anyone else comes down with something similar, they will be pre-warned.

Hopefully the ab's will kick in soon and she'll start feeling better.

I see that the incubation period is 2-4 days so if any of the rest of you are likely to contract it you won't have to wait long

BlueBumedFly · 27/04/2009 20:36

Sycampretree - at least now you know. You did what you thought was best on the medical advice you were given. Its cool, she is going to be fine.

Now, poor yourself a glass of wine honey!

DesperateHousewifeToo · 28/04/2009 10:17

How is she today?

Have just heard that M was off last week with 'slapped cheek' which I think has similar symptoms too.
