They are 5 and 21 months. Will they have any ill effects?

sounds like you have already convinced yourself to do nowt

SlightlyMadScotland · 26/03/2009 20:01

OK.

I think that I have done my maths right this time.

20mg/kg is a dose which would cause illness according to the link in my previous post.
Each tab is 6mg of iron.

So 3 1/2 tablets per kg in weight would be a problem.

So as I originally said 5 tabs and 2 tabs shouldn't be a problem....but you never know...and can you guarantee it was only 5 and 2 which would be more my concern.

Northernlurker · 26/03/2009 20:02

Take your children to A&E now. The only thing you know for certain is that they have had access to a potentially dangerous substance. You don't know how many they took - you only know what your (no doubt now scared) 5 year old has told you.

You cannot muck around with this sort of thing. Go to A&E and when you get back throw the damn supplements in the bin!

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 26/03/2009 20:02

No not really I have just texted my mum via o2 online to phone the local Health center on my behalf.

I asked her to email or ring DH if it is serious.

I am just trying to calm down because you are all panicking me.

I was expecting you all to say that they may have a bit of dirroreah or something. Not that it may be fatal.

SlightlyMadScotland · 26/03/2009 20:03

That maths is also based on a single link...

SlightlyMadScotland · 26/03/2009 20:06

Just to be clear what we are all saying is that it is likely to be OK, but that we are not qualified to say for sure and that we strongly recommend talking to someone qualified as this is something you wouldn't want to mess with; and that we would be concerned about the quantity consumed.

purepurple · 26/03/2009 20:06

multivits can be dangerous in young children
you need proper advice now

ScottishMummy · 26/03/2009 20:07

sorry,no i am saying no can assess or diagnose online.so no one here can say will be OK

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 26/03/2009 20:08

I do know how many they took. DD2's are still on the floor all slimy. I counted the NEW packet and it would seem if dd2 had two then dd1 has only ate four. How do you propose I get them to a and e with no phone or transport? Shall we all make the hours walk in the cold and rain?

And she is not scared, she is currently dancing and signing 'my old mans a dustman' to dd2.

Nobody wants you to panic - but an overdose of vitamins can be very serious for a child and you just don't know enough about this to be relaxed. Stop procrastinating and take your children to A&E please.

Northernlurker · 26/03/2009 20:09

Taxi? Friends? Walk?

purepurple · 26/03/2009 20:12

have you got neighbours?
knock on their door and ask them to take you or use their phone

or go to a phonebox?

ScottishMummy · 26/03/2009 20:13

this is mental.your kids ingest potentially harmful tabblets on you are online getting humphy at suggestion you go to A&E

ach ....no phone.too far.too cold

oh well then

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 26/03/2009 20:13

How would I phone said taxi? Or my friends? Who live in London and Sheffield or don't drive.

I have texted my mum and am sat here panicking thanks. I don't need you to make me feel worse.

I don't want to overreact and scare them both or drag them both out in the cold. The hospital is over an hours walk away. The taxi rank is is a 30 min walk away.

And I am not procrastinating. I am sat here panicking on my own with no phone and no means of contacting anyone expect via text and email which is what I have done.

MY MUM IS PHONING NHS DIRECT!!!!

OP posts:
purepurple · 26/03/2009 20:16

good!

Northernlurker · 26/03/2009 20:20

I'm sorry I really don't want to add to your troubles but I feel you are now behaving unreasonably. Obviously your situation is difficult - but you asked for people's thoughts and you've had them. You need to get this sorted now. Hanging around on the internet waiting for your mum to be called back by NHS Direct and then e-mail you? Yes going out with the children is a crap situation - but sitting at home fretting isn't great either!

chegirl · 26/03/2009 20:24

NHS direct is online could you email them? I cant remember if they have that facility but you could check.

scaredoflove · 26/03/2009 20:27

I am someone who never consults a doc unless a limb is hanging off and won't stay on with plasters.....

This time I'm with everyone else, get your mum to call you a cab or go next door and phone one yourself and get to A & E, vitamins and especially iron overdose can be very dangerous and needs prompt attention

I'm sorry you are scared but you asked for advice, this isn't being said to scare you

andirobo · 26/03/2009 20:28

Urm how did you text your mum if you have no phone?? Can you do it on-line? I would just get your mum to call an ambulance for your kids - at least you will get there nice and warm and quickly with a blue flashing light.

ScottishMummy · 26/03/2009 20:29

email facility not intended for urgent clinical query.general queries only and 5 working day response

mrsgboring · 26/03/2009 20:29

I second the A&E suggestion. Go and knock on your neighbours' door and ask them to phone you a taxi. Alternatively text your mother or DH to ask them to phone you a taxi.

Yes, it's shit getting your kids up to go to A&E and yes, you may be okay without the trip to A&E but at least this way they will know never ever ever ever to do such a thing again.

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 26/03/2009 20:42

My mum is phoning NHS direct. I have the tablets because I was advised to give dd a vitamin supplement and to up her dietry intake of iron by my GP as she ha low iron and is making herself ill by not eating.

They were kept in a cuboard that dd climbed to while I was making dinner.

My phone is lost god knows where. I don't even know if it is in the house. My house phone will not work. I can hear what people are saying to me, but they cannot hear me. I need to buy a new one.

DH has stormed out to god knows where with his phone.

It's raining and blowing a gale here and the hospital, which is in the processing of closing down a and e is over an hours walk away and I don't even know if they still see children. The new Super Hospital is about two hours walk away. The new health center/drop in center is still being built. The out of hours service only see's you by appointment.

I have decided the best thing to is wait and see what NHS direct say, I am sure if the dd's need urgent medical attention my won't have to wait for them to call back.

And after typing all that DH is back and he is phoning.

honestly i would have thought they were fine and can understand why you feel they way you do

HOWEVER I WAS ADVISED ON FIRST AID COURSES THAT IN THE CASE OF A POSSIBLE OVERDOPSE SEEK EMERGENCY ADVICE

so i think you may have to drag them out and waste an evening in a and e because the possibilties if there werent fine and you didnt dont bear thinking about

sorry
