ENT apponitment - What should i expect?

My Ds 2.7 has his first ENT appointment ( supposed to be urgent - waited 6 weeks!) next friday and i was wondering what to expect.
His tonsils are so big they almost touch and he has been constantly ill with throat/chest infections since last august. He has just finished his third lot of antibiotics this year (since jan).
Do you think i should video him sleeping to show the docs his breathing at night? ( very snorey and a bit laboured imo )
Any info would be greatly appreciated as i don't want to get my hopes up!!!

My 2.5 year DD had her tonsils out t the end of March. It has made a world of difference to her. I posted a summary of our experience of the op in this post.

Good luck with your DS's op.

DS had his tonsils out on Monday - he is 4.5 and he is ok - he has lost a lot of weight and has a silly high pitched voice at the moment but we were the same as you and he had had 6 boughts back to back with about 4 days inbetween without tonsilitus.

Scariest bit was how quickly he went under when they put the drugs into the canula but he has been ok since Monday so I hope you little one has the same experience.

How are you doing, Roulade?

roulade · 03/05/2009 22:50

Sorry Elibean, just noticed your message . I am getting extremely nervous about wednesday now ( only 2 sleeps til we go in). We have explained to ds what is going to happen but i think he is a bit too young to understand that it really will be sore! He is going around at the moment with pretend scissors cutting our tonsils out and putting them in the cupboard.
We just have to confirm that he has a bed tomorrow then we are all set to go in on tuesday at 4pm (gulp).Do you have any recommendations of what to take with us? Obviously his bear will be coming and a mini puzzle his auntie bought him ( he is a puzzle maniac) but any other suggestions would be fab!!

Don't worry, it doesn't matter that he doesnt' understand how sore he will be - kids live in the moment! Its more for us, I sometimes think

If the hospital has TVs for each bed (HDU does, where dd went) that will be a godsend...if not, I would take a portable DVD player with headphones, if you can. Apart from that, I took a couple of books, and a bag with tiny new pressies in (like stocking fillers, tiny toy farm, finger puppet, etc) but tbh, TV and books were the best as she was too sore/tired to play much.

For you, bring a couple of clean tops in case he throws up on you after anaesthetic - quite common! And a couple of short-sleeved ones for him, too. Its warm in hospital, you'll both get hot and sweaty, probably. I also took a bottle of water for me, a drink for her (once she was allowed, post op), some snacks for both of you. Wipes, a few toiletries, a flannel to wipe hot/sore/sicky faces/necks with. Some cash for drinks/phone calls/car park.

If I think of anything else, I'll add later! Meantime, good luck and hang in there - life will get a lot easier in a week or two

Elibean · 04/05/2009 09:28

lol at the cutting tonsils out - dd1 did a lot of that when her sister was going in!

roulade · 04/05/2009 10:42

Dh also suggested the dvd player which we will hopefully borrow off of sil. i will definately pack a few more tops and a spare set of bottoms i think!!!
According to GOSH booklet Tvs have to be switched off at 9pm ( why should we let the ill kids sleep? thats what i want to know!!!)
.
Thanks for the suggestions, i will go and sort them now! Any more will be greatfully received

Well it's all done!!! He had to stay in 3 nights in the end due to having a nasal prong to help his airway for the first night. Apparantly his adenoids were so big that they were growing into his nose!!!
I am amazed at his recovery so far, he is like his normal self and since we got home this morning has been munching on really crusty bread.
The first night after the op was the worst as the nurses had to keep waking him up to suction out the tube which upset him somewhat but since having it removed yesterday morning he has been fine.
I am sooo relieved it is all over and hopefully he will have no problems ( bleeding etc ) with his recovery.
Thanks everyone for your help and advice, you have been fab

Phew, roulade, am so glad its over and he's doing so well! I'm sorry you had to have the extra nights in, but hopefully now it'll all be plain sailing and far, far better nights. No wonder the poor love was having trouble breathing at night - they told us that dd's adenoids were probably more responsible for her apnoea than her tonsils (which were also huge, nearly met in the middle).

One piece of info they didn't tell us, but I read here on MN, which hopefully won't be relevent but just in case: adenoids can grow back - its pretty unusual, but they can. Usually (I asked the consultant if it was true!) after a couple of years, if they're going to - but its rare. Just wanted to mention it because I'm a strong believer in information being important - if either of our LOs start gasping at night again in a few years' time, we'll know what to ask ENT to check for

Here's wishing your ds ongoingly great recovery, hope you start to see the benefits v soon.

roulade · 09/05/2009 00:13

Thanks!
I didn't know that about adenoids! I will bring it up at his check up in 4-6 weeks time.
Lets hope our LOs are not any of the unusual cases eh?
