kids can develop allergic reactions to things over time so it could be a new thing like soap, bubble bath, washing powder

it could be cold/heat/dryness and extreme weather changes causing sensitive skin

just to check - did you do a glass test for meningitis? it doesnt sound like it but just for your reassurance - roll a glass over rash area and the redness should appear to go. If you can still see rash through the glass, call NHS Direct asap.

bumbly · 12/02/2009 23:00

rash starts to fade after a while so dont think mening

thanks!!!

Can you update this thread and let us know how he gets on as it sounds similar to what my dd has had for the past 3 weeks.

Although she is feeling better now the rash is still there and every time I think its about to disappear it comes back.

Doctor said its just her body reacting to the viral infection and prescribed dermol and cortizone but it hasn't really helped. School has said they have had contact from other parents of children at the school (not the same class) who have the same thing and they have been off for weeks too.

Am phoning to see if I can get another appointment tomorrow (this will be her third).

Hope your ds gets over this quickly.

bumbly · 14/02/2009 13:07

thanks - update

went to useless gp

said alternate neurofen and clapol

fever was up to 39.5 and hives even came on face

was told hives cuz fair skinned

anyway as of late he now vomits whenver eats something..othwerwise doesn't vomit so dont think vomiting bug..temp went down to 36.0 most odd

Thanks for the update bumbly.

Was told the same as you for the fever - neurofen and calpol.

My dd also had them on her face which panicked me a bit as I hadnt seen anything like it before but they seem to have gone now - thank goodness.

The rash seems to be mainly on her trunk. Yesterday I yet again thought it seemed to be fading but it seems pinker again today. Have another appointment for Tuesday.

My dd wasn't vomiting but I know some of the other kids with similar symptoms to hers at school were. As I said before she felt better pretty quickly so I hope your ds does too.

mummytopebs · 15/02/2009 01:04

My dd had a similar thing when she was around 2 (no vomiting though) it was an allergic reaction to something and they kept coming and going for around 6 week - turned out she had been playing in the garden and it was something she had picked up in the soil (well thats waht it was narrowed down to) Has your ds been playing in snow or garden where could have come in contact with something? I would go back to gp if not happy

mummytopebs · 15/02/2009 01:08

Forgot to add this was never in the same place one day could be back, next day leg etc etc it was really bad when she had it on her bum, it covered her full bum cheek. I would also give piriton that semed to take the itching away and the swelling

lisad123 · 15/02/2009 01:12

think there is something going around as my dd had this a few weeks back and we were told ecemza and sent away with steriod cream, that hasnt work
SGK ds2 had something simular the same week. think it might a virus making the rounds

bumbly · 15/02/2009 09:03

still gt temp of 39.5-40

no rash

racing heart and bretah all night last night

and cal/ibu does not seem to be doing anything

not eating

what the heck is this?

belgo · 15/02/2009 09:07

Viruses can cause high temperatures and urticaria, as the urticaria itself is a response to the immune system working.

I think you should take him to the doctors today because the cal/ibru aren't helping, he's still got a very high temp and his eating and breathing in particular are effected.

If you can't find a doctor, take him to a&e.

eyeeye · 15/02/2009 09:23

Sounds like he's got a virus.. I'd give the nurofen / calpol and keep in light clothing, potentially use a fan and as long as temp is ocming down after medication (within the hour) I wouldn't panic unduly.

Have you given him piriton as well in case the uritcaria is an allergic reaction.

Listen to your gut and consult medics if you feel it is important .. but I read panic in your posts (understandable of course when it's your child) and sometimes this can colour thought processes (it is common for viruses to take 3 days or so to dissipate)

CoteDAzur · 15/02/2009 09:52

I'm glad to hear ibuprofen has brought down your DS' temperature

To be perfectly honest, I have never heard of urticaria flaring up as a result of simple fever. (Assuming we are talking about real urticaria, and not a bit of rash). I would take him straight to A&E.

belgo · 15/02/2009 09:55

Cotedazur - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urticaria talks about urticaria being the result of a virus.

eyeeye · 15/02/2009 09:56

I know you can get uritcaria with glandular fever

CoteDAzur · 15/02/2009 10:24

That is all great what Wikipedia says, but if it were my son, I would take him straight to the A&E.

I say this as someone who has several quite serious allergies that manifest themselves with urticaria. That it spreads from a small bit on wrist to multiple areas around an infants body within 12 hours would worry me. If it spreads any further, it could cause serious problems like breathing difficulties. and trust me you would hate to be waiting for ambulance to arrive if that happens while you are at home. (Not fun - it happened to me).

Besides, diagnosing allergic urticaria as opposed to the rashes that result from certain very serious diseases is not that easy for us (non-professionals).

As I said, I would go straight to A&E. Not because of the fever itself, but because it is coupled with urticaria that is spreading.

Lulumama · 15/02/2009 10:28

IIRC, bumbly's ds has had rashes before, often around the time he is unwell

temp 1 degree above normal and a bit of a rash is not something i would take a child to A&E for, but that is my opinion.

especially if the calpol and nurofen have been controlling the fever

for a small child, spending several hours in A&E is likely to be more distressing than the illness itself !

belgo · 15/02/2009 10:30

cotedazur - if you read my post, you'll see my advice is very similar. I hope that bumbly's son is now seeing a doctor.

rubyslippers · 15/02/2009 10:33

My DS had a very bad bout of urticaria - it was basically because he had a virus and he was covered from head to toe

GP reassured is that it could happen when children are run down

i think a call to a GP or NHS Direct would be the first course of action rather than A & E because the fever is controlled
