Would you give your DC Medised even if they were under 2 years old?

DD is 15mo and is very snotty, she is struggling to breath when trying to get to sleep or for a nap.

The doctor has not prescribed Medised (I got some in a couple of weeks ago for DH as he was quite ill, it makes him feel better lol)

Would you?

I am aware that it is only with the last few months that the directions have changed re giving Medised to DC under 2 years old. It used to be okay for 3mo onwards.

As I said before, the rules changed because some parents were thick.

ive used medised since ds was 9m old, i had to go to the chemist without ds and lie my face off to get it. my friend who has older children told me the old doses so i felt fine about giving it.

Yes - Medised is great stuff IMO. Just the thing for little noses. I have road tested it on all my kids.

The antihistamine is not a problem in minor OD terms, because they just conk out (we had to find this out the hard way with a bottle of Piriton once and a panicky call to the doctor).

Paracetemol on the other hand needs to be approached with extreme caution because of the potential for liver damage. However if you are being sensible and not exceeding maximum daily dose it will be fine.

I asked the doctor yesterday about giving it to DD who is 20weeks. She said it's fine. We give calpol during the day if she needs it and medised at night.

Yes. When I was refused it in Boots just after the rule change, DD was 18 months and had used it before. The pharmacist told me that the rules had changed because some parents were going over the recommended dosage - ridiculous reason if you ask me so I got my mum to go in to buy it for her "3 year old" granddaughter.....

miniandme · 21/02/2009 16:28

I have been using it on dt as he has a serious case of the chicken pox and is only 13 months but is thrashing around with the itching,we ended up driving him around at 5am the other morning to get him off to sleep it is so distressing watching him!!
The dosage is pretty much just the same as for calpol. i too lie blatantly to pharmacist that it is for dd1 who is 6

yes - the warnings were only because people didn't follow the correct usage etc.

I would use medised with a 15 month old, but I might seek medical advice with a child who was as young as 5 months. However I would only use it when they had a heavy head cold, not as knock out drops.

Medised is really effective, but fairly potent. My son who is seven years old tells me its the best thing for an ear infection.
