She is 9 she has dyspraxia and is already classed as odd by her peers .
She had an eye apt on Monday and the doctor wasn't happy with her sight in the right eye and said she would contact me in a couple of days after chatting with the consultant.
She rang today and they would like her to wear a patch for up to 6 hours a day ,she also mentioned that it could be better for her to wear it for a couple of hours in the schoolday because her bad eye will be doing more at school .
When I told her her face fell and she said "they are all going to laugh at me Mum"
and she is right they will ,the SENCO says she will have a chat with her tomorrow and I know on the long run it is in her best interest I am just so sad for her and I know how cruel kids can and have been to her in the past.

Not looking for a solution just needed a little sympathy moan .

Oh I know! It was terribly, terribly hard for dd when she had very little sight in her eye and had to totally rely on it for 6 hours a day. It did improve very rapidly, which apparently was the point of having it on so much.

Will read those links, thanks.

OK, had a quick look. The atropine study was v interesting, and I'm still cross about not being offered it years ago, as I'm sure dd's eyesight would not have deteriorated as much as it did when she was non-compliant with the patching.

But the link about 2 hours of patching is only comparing 2 hours with wearing specs alone, so doesn't say anything about 6 hours versus 2 hours as far as I can see.

Well, six hours certainly wouldn't hurt, it's that we don't do it over here anymore. I'm sure you could google other studies. I had basically found out on my own about 15 years ago that patients improved the same amount with less hours of patching and then heard a lecture about it about 8 years ago (iirc) when some of the initial studies were concluded.

There definitely was a study comparing 6 to 2-3, btw.
