DS is having his tonsils and adenoids out tomorrow - eek! Feel sick with worry already. Op has been cancelled twice already as he hasnt been well enough to have it done but I think they may well do it tommorow. He isnt 100%, has a horrid wet cough, but then he always has that. Hospital have just rung and done admission details over phone, as well as confirming his ward bed and HDU bed for afterwards.
Elibean, isnt your LO's op tomorrow too? How are you? DS is blissfully unaware, is yours?
How long have you been told you will be in?

could vomit thinking about it

Thanks elibean for the advice I hope dc recovers very soon. ds is better and at pre assessment they said as long as he doesn't come down with stomach bug this week they will go ahead and operate.

I have started to get headaches for the past 2 days even though I've put the situation to the back of my mind I think its still givng me stress and am terried for him not mostly the operation but afterwards the pain he is going to feel.

I'll let you know how it went

Elibean · 16/01/2009 23:06

I was terrified of that too, but its upsetting but dealable with, somehow...much less scary dealing with it than imagining it, I think.

Big tips: give pain meds a bit before they are due. Overlap them if possible.

Also...offer foods you do'n think they'll want in a million years, you never know! I put ice cubes in a baby bottle with water (or calpol and water, today) and dd loves it. Load fridge with ice lollies rather than ice cream (too gloopy).

And get as much rest as you can now, because sleep is hard to come by during recovery! will think of more tomorrow....xxx

Elibean · 17/01/2009 20:32

Only new thought (in tired brain ) is this: do give as much to drink as possible before the 'no more drink' deadline...dd got very thirsty and upset, before finally falling asleep in my arms an hour or two before her op, but I knew she was well hydrated. I also asked the nurse if she could have a teeny ice chip to suck when she got really upset (and there were still 2 hours to go) and he agreed

Staff are really nice on paeds wards, I found, and that helps a lot. Oh, one other thought, do have snacks and drinks handy for yourself...dd wouldn't let me out of her sight for hours after coming round, so either a bag of things for you and/or someone to get you a cup of tea/snack etc is fairly essential.

Lubbly, how is your ds today? dd had a much better day, though from what I've read its likely to go downhill again for a few days when the scabs start coming off

mumsobusy · 18/01/2009 16:04

Arrrrrggghhh it was goings so well now for the last 2 week poorly last week he had stomach bug now this week he started to get a slight cold hope it gets better before thursday if it gets worse they wont operate

Elibean · 18/01/2009 16:50

Fingers crossed for you. dd had a slight cold, and they went ahead - they know its impossible to avoid all bugs at this time of year. They told me they only worry about hacking coughs and high temps...especially if he's not on the very first day or two of it, so they know its not the start of 'flu or something.

Here's hoping!

aznerak · 19/01/2009 07:38

Hi Elibean!

how is she doing? Hope its still going ok. interesting you saying how distressed she was when she woke up after the op. So was dd and she hated the canula (sp?) and kept trying to wrench it out.
She was incredibly groggy and so I, like you, assumed she wouldn't remember.
Over a year on however, whenever the subject of hospitals or more specifically her tonsils/adenoids is mentioned, she talks about how horrid it was on the "big wheely bed" when she woke up with "the horrid ouchy thing" in her hand!

weird what they remember.

Elibean · 19/01/2009 08:12

Hi! Yes, thats interesting...I hope, if she remembers it, she can talk about it like your dd

She's in loads of pain, poor mite, just as I read about on various websites....day 4 was good, then yesterday she started clutching her ears and crying in pain whenenever meds started to wear off. Guess its scabs starting to peel away. Makes for dreadful nights, and my main concern is I couldn't get her to take her ABs last night at all...she did this morning, but don't hold out much hope for tonight, either

She's had 5 days, so its only today and half of tomorrow, wonder how much it matters??

aznerak · 19/01/2009 17:27

Our dd wouldn't take them after day 5. I tried but she simply spat it out again. Spoke to doc about it and they said not to worry if I can keep dosing her up on painkillers. The ABs for 5 days should be enough. Said to just observe and take into GP if she deteriorated.

She was fine though. Days 5/6 were tough but then she improved really quickly and my day 7/8, she was almost her oldself, just without the snoring and sleep apnoea.

YOu are SO nearly there, well done!

Elibean · 19/01/2009 21:01

Thank you thank you! Just what I needed to hear

She says, as she hears dd waking up for the second time in an hour another long night ahead but yes, we are getting there...

...and I'm less worried about the ABs, which she took this morning but not tonight again. Not sure whether to bother in the morning...

aznerak · 20/01/2009 07:47

How was her night Elibean? It should start to get better in the next day or two - you should be over the worst, so fingers crossed, by the weekend, it'll all be past you! xxx

Elibean · 20/01/2009 10:08

Not as bad, in some ways, because we didn't have to go down and put Peppa Pig on to distract her from the pain! And I got a full 3 hour stretch of sleep at one point. OTOH, she half woke a lot, whimpering, and needed water/cuddles, and once picking up and cuddling/paracetamol, so still v sore. Mostly ears, and she occasionally says her mouth hurts, though I can't see any white spots/thrushy stuff in there.

No more ABs down the hatch, either.

Running low on Voltarol, she won't take Nurofen, might hvae to go to GP for pain meds for tomorrow...

Thanks, Az, for all the support and voice of experience. Hanging in!

lubblyjubblies · 20/01/2009 17:39

Hi Elibean, another night looming and honestly dreading it. DH is on nights all week so typically the first night on my own and DS was worse than ever. He woke so often crying. He was maxed out on meds, terrible. To add insult to injury he has apparently slept from 10am till 3pm when I came home, so obviously he isnt even going to be tired tonight.
How is DD today?

Elibean · 20/01/2009 23:13

Poor Lubbly and poor DS, I totally sympathise with the rubbish nights. I had a 3 hours stretch last night without waking (dd is in with me, dh in the spare room - she just wants mummy ) and that was the best in a week. dh took last week off, but is back at work this week and works tues and wed evenings - not easy juggling well kid/sick kid bedtimes. Nights though...thats hard.

I think dd's scabs have been coming off - she keeps suddenly coughing and spluttering, ick. Also, she had lots of (ear) pain after eating certain things today that she's had no trouble with till now - suspect they were sticking in newly de-scabbed tonsil beds. Do you think same happening for your ds? Its supposed to, around now...

BUT: at 7pm dd was clutching her ears and whimpering in my arms, I gave her Volatarol, as usual, and an hour later she started jumping around and ate more than she had all week...then drank some milk for the first time in days...so am hoping hard that she's turned a corner.

Hope your ds will be better tomorrow too - and here's wishing us both a better night!

Elibean · 20/01/2009 23:14

ps dd has had max meds the whole week - and we asked GP for extra today, to last another 3 days. After tonight am hoping we won't need them, but better safe than sorry.

naswm · 21/01/2009 11:44

how are the little ones doing now?

Elibean · 21/01/2009 12:36

Not too bad, naswm, thanks for asking

Night was still rough, but instead of having to take her downstairs and soothe her for half an hour in front of a DVD, I can just give her a sip of water and cuddle in bed...definitely better. Lots of coughing and spluttering and throat clearing at night, so suspect scabs going fast now.

And she's eating better, though will still yelp with pain at times when she does. Meds still needed 24/24, and she's still sleeping in my bed. But....definitely better!

Elibean · 21/01/2009 12:37

How's ds, lubbly? How was your night?
