Cough back again

DD had a long lingering cough, took a turn for worse with high temp and put on amoxycillin. Did nothing and put on clarithromycin. Cleared up and finished course but now cough seems to be coming back. Temp seems fine, but wondering whether to head back to GP or not.

It sounds like maybe another virus- which the ABs won't be able to help with- but if the cough gets worse or she runs a temp again I'd go to the GP just to be on the safe side. There's so much going round at the moment we seem to be hardly a week between colds/coughs here! Hope she's better soon

mummynumnum · 29/12/2008 16:18

seems ok in self so hope will get no worse.

We are all beginning our second round of coughs here.,. drives you crazy, doesn't it?

believer07 · 29/12/2008 17:49

Its probably time that you sought some kind of alternative healing, if you keep going with the anti-bs you are just going to keep getting infections every 6-8 weeks.

Try this book I just reccomened it on another thread.

here

I do worry about all the antibiotics and i do not go to the GP willy nilly for any of us. DD has febrile convulsions and it seems that any sniff of one of those and we all panic.

mummynumnum · 29/12/2008 21:07

She is coughing away upstairs. Feeling a sense of panic and poss trip to docs. no temp-so maybe not...

believer07 · 29/12/2008 22:42

Its your call, he oould check for infection. If it gives you peace of mind go.

mummynumnum · 30/12/2008 07:08

Def may look into the probiotics if you can recommend a good one, but for now want to avoid a feb convulsion so will try and get her the once over this morn. Hacked away coughing all night

OP posts:
JumpingJellyfish · 30/12/2008 08:35

I would definitely go- sounds like the cough is annoying her a lot even if she's not running a temp. You need the peace of mind that only a doctor can offer.

We use probiotics here, definitely think they help the immune system- we get Biocare Acidophilus plus ones (strawberry flavour) and just give half a teaspoon on food twice a day (as recommended by a medical herbalist), so the bottle lasts quite a long time- take a look at this page

Hope your DD improves soon, know how worrying it is xx

mummynumnum · 30/12/2008 08:38

Doctors still closed-Hmm! Wonder if they are having an extended holiday. Hope not.

OP posts:
mummynumnum · 30/12/2008 08:43

Are most peoples GP closed today?

OP posts:
JumpingJellyfish · 30/12/2008 09:00

Yep ours are- do you have an out-of-hours number? There will be out-of-hours doctors working if your surgery is still closed. Usually you can get the number on the answerphone of your GP surgery, or in your yellow pages etc. Good luck

mummynumnum · 30/12/2008 09:03

ooo they have an engaged sound now-good sign!

mummynumnum · 30/12/2008 09:32

Only emergency appts today so booked in for 910 tomorrow. Hopefully we can get through to then.

OP posts:
JumpingJellyfish · 30/12/2008 09:38

If you are really worried before then you could either use the out-of-hours doctors this evening or go to A&E.

I sometimes find sitting my DD in a very steamy bathroom helps ease her cough a bit. Hope she starts improving again soon.

mummynumnum · 30/12/2008 14:20

Have re-scheduled for 4.30 today as high temp (feb convulsion levels) have started. Given paracetomol and ibuprofen but temp still not as low as would like.

OP posts:
mummynumnum · 30/12/2008 16:51

Doc gave her something for asthma and asked to see her in a week. Would you get really high temp with asthma? Stupidly did not ask the doc that.

OP posts:
JumpingJellyfish · 30/12/2008 20:11

No you wouldn't get a high temp with asthma- but rather with a virus or bacterial infection. If he didn't give you ABs then he must think it's a virus (which are more common). Even upper respiratory tract infections (colds, most coughs) which are caused by viruses can cause reactions like asthma in children. How old is your DD? From what I've read and experience with DS asthma can rarely be properly diagnosed until around 2 yo. But many babies with bad coughs get the inflammatory reaction similar to asthma and so inhalers really do help- and they also reduce coughing at night allowing more rest.

Hope she's much better soon xx

mummynumnum · 30/12/2008 20:35

She is 2 and she seems to have stopped coughing, so salbutamol liquid appears to have helped, although just going up to check on temp.

She did seem to pick up after nap this afternoon so hopefully a good sign.

thanks for good wishes.

Trip to out of hours doc last night, sent home, feb convulsion and back to a and e. Chest xray and urine tested. All ok-just a virus-damn virus's!

OP posts:
mummynumnum · 31/12/2008 14:50

temps not good and all manic again. just dont know what to do.

OP posts:
dooneygirl · 31/12/2008 15:21

I'm so sorry. DS gets febrile convulsions, and usually croup every time he gets anything that affects his respiratory system, and I absolutely obsess over his health. His are all down to virus things that ABs cannot help. I feel so helpless, and can only imagine you feel the same.

mummynumnum · 31/12/2008 15:49

I do-its the sitting there thinking please go down before she fits! so anxiety creating!

OP posts:
dooneygirl · 31/12/2008 19:12

Is she doing any better?
