when a doctor says 'if he goes off his feed bring him back in' exactly what do you class as off feed??

ds2 is 5 weeks old for a week has had blocked nose type thing. took to gp weds as he had awful cough and struggling to breathe. no temperature. gp said he has catarrh/mucus and justkeep doing what we were (steam etc) but if he got a fever or went off his feed take him back.well he fed at 11pm but only took 1oz, slept through till 7 where hes only taken 2oz and fallen asleep. this is first time hes slept through but has gone 6 hours at night before. he isnt yet in a routine apart from feeding roughly every 3 hours. i dont know what they class as off his feed. sometimes he'l only take 1oz and fall asleep so i dont know if this is him getting worse as hes ill or not. anyone?? he doesnt have a temp

Didn't want to leave unanswered. IME, a temp/fever is the bodies way of fighting any kind of infection or problem, so if no temp, there might not be anything to worry about.
I don't know what your gp would class as going off feed, but if you're worried, take baby to get checked over.

gagarin · 28/12/2008 08:30

"Off his feed" is only taking 1oz instead of 4-5oz for 2-3 feeds in a row - leading to a significant reduction in the amount of feed he takes and prob dryish nappies. The dry nanppies are not a good thing.

So if when he wakes he doesn't take more than an ounce for the next couple of feeds I would be inclined to phone the out of hours doc or go down to the walk in centre?

mad4mybaby · 28/12/2008 08:32

thanks for responding. he never takes more than 3oz... guess ill have to see what happens at 10am...

If it's any help, I am a mum of 3 and I reckon you can never disturb a doctor too much with a newborn. They never mind you going to see them. So if you are worried, I would nip down to the out of hours clinic for some reassurance.

In the meantime, if there is a pharmacy open, a pharmacist will be able to make you up some sterile saline drops for the baby's nose (which is more or less the only thing they can be given for a cold at this age). This will help with any snot situation.

mad4mybaby · 28/12/2008 09:45

he doesnt have any snot in his nostrils, its all in the back of his throat. But i am using the drops.. yesterday bought an air humidifier thing aswell. Im going to see how he feeds next feed. I think its because he slept through the night that im querying it. It may be the first time because that what he wanted to do or it may be a coincidence it was at night time and hes more ill.. IUSWIM?

lillaura, odd you sent your link as i read that before i posted! It sounded exactly like reflux to me aswell. ds1 had severe gastro reflux, projectile vomit EVERY feed and now ds2 has silent reflux but nothing like ds1 thankfully. I hve that to deal with on top of this bug thing

VirginBoffinMum · 28/12/2008 09:50

He's a bit young to be sleeping through the night. This household's record is 4.5 months for a particularly big baby. Normally it's 6-7 months with some disruption when they're teething.

If it's seeming like more than a simple cold then I would see a doctor unless he has a really good feed and an impressive nappy before lunchtime.

mad4mybaby · 28/12/2008 09:54

well ds1 stopped night feeding at 8 weeks...im not holding my breath oviously!! With regard to the nappy comment he isnt doing many poos at all. Without making this epic post but he has silent reflux plus intolerances and hashad milk changed a few times abnd been put on neocate a few weeks ago and doesnt poo much and asked gp about that aswell on weds and she said not to worry about it as its because his body sorting out after milk change...

VBM never say never dd1 was 5 months, ds was 7 months ahhhhh dd2 was 2 months, dd3 (other than this bug for last week or so) has been 11pm-7am and last night had last feed at 8pm slept from 9pm-5am so think we are getting the night sleeping back

they say using a dummy/soother is good because it encourages your baby to open their mouth and breath through the mouth more

lilLAURAand4poorlykids · 28/12/2008 09:57

forgot to mention that dd3 11pm - 7am was from day one

VirginBoffinMum · 28/12/2008 09:59

Blimey I am seriously jealous now.
Hope my next baby is as obliging.

lilLAURAand4poorlykids · 28/12/2008 10:06

lol the thing is she has been making up for it during the day recently sent to test me maybe?

tatt · 28/12/2008 10:13

small babies can't afford to lose a lot of weight and dehydrate easily. He would probably be OK until tomorrow as he is still feeding but if you're worried speak to the duty doctor later on today.

You can raise the head of the cot by placing something (wood best but thick books possibly) so that there is a slight slope. Steam is great.

lilLAURAand4poorlykids · 28/12/2008 10:18

just had a thought - when ds was baby he had a horrible cold he was about 5/6 weeks and the doctors said that i could give him calpol due to him being a good weight (weight of average 8 week old) so maybe you could call the surgery for a doctors call back and discuss his weight and see if doc think he is big enough for a small dose - cant promise he will esp as i dont know how heavy your baby is but wrth a try maybe?

lilLAURAand4poorlykids · 28/12/2008 10:21

says on calpol bottle
2-3months(weghing 4kg and not a premature baby) a single 2,5ml spoonfulmay be given, another after 4 - 6 hours if needed ) which is 8lb 13

NorthernLurkerwithastarontop · 28/12/2008 10:22

So he is sleepier than normal for him and feeding significantly less? I would take him to the doctors tbh - he is very young - better to be safe and overcautious I think.

lilLAURAand4poorlykids · 28/12/2008 10:23

yes def agree at least contact dr and see what they say or try your HV,

mad4mybaby · 28/12/2008 10:49

lilLAURAfeelingontopform · 29/12/2008 15:30

no worries - its so exhausting when babies are poorly , dd3 slept 11 - 2 had one ounce of milk then slept till 5 took an hour to take 2 ounces and brought it all back up she has been feeding 1-2 ounces at a time all day - im going crazy
