Another 104 degree temp, nurofen not working now.... HELP!

BlueBumedFly · 25/12/2008 23:00

My DD has a history of bad colds, ear infects and tonsillitis.

A few weeks ago she had tonsillitis and had double strength antibiotics to get rid of it, she is allergic to penacillin so have to have useless erythromycin.

Tonight we have yet another 40+ temp, she had nurofen (5ml) at 7pm and it seems to have done nothing. Just given Medised as she is very bunged up and will take her to the out of hours docs in the am.

So, can I give more than 5ml nurofen and also can I give it more than 8 hourly???

I know how to safely combine paracetomol and nurofen so not worried there, just very worried about poor DD. She is 20 months old.

Many thanks to anyone still up and about. I will gratefully receive any messages but may have to pick them up in the morning due to a 5am start with DD and her very high temp.

Many thanks in advance. xx

Ah, poor love....sounds a lot like the one dd1 had. She had high temps for six days, I was beginning to think it would go on forever...not sure if it was real flu or not, but the rest of us didn't get it (and we were immunized). Probably not.

If she's no better tomorrow, I'd maybe get her checked out again?? In case she needs different ABs? If only for peace of mind...

And how are you feeling now? Throat?

Sending wellish vibes your way (all we have in the Elibean household ) and thinking of you, xx

BlueBumedFly · 29/12/2008 20:30

Thank you honey, so kind. xx

I did take her back to the doc today. She is no better in fact ear infect in both ears now. Had to see the dozy old caring original practice doctor who just dolled out another week of ABs. I am going to see my own doc next week for a polite frank and open and see if I cannot get her on a better AB. The problem (and I have prob said this before and am now just repeating myself) is that erythromycin is such a broad spectrum AB that is does not do the job. As she is allergic to penicillin, unless she gets a hospital worthy infection which I hope to god she never does, they won't make the jump to a specialized ENT AB due to the cost. So, am going to ask for a referral.

I asked doc to look at my throat too, apparently just a virus, made me feel like a right moaning mini! It really flippin hurts!!

Hey ho, having a glass of wine, that is sure to help.... if not I shall have another!!

Thanks for your kind wishes, very very much appreciated. I think there is most def a 'mini' flu doing around, glad your DD is over it now, we are on night 6 so fingers crossed! xx

Hope your dd is ok. My dd has recurrent bad chest and ended anti bs on xmas day and today has come back. DD prone to feb convulsions so I am constantly in there with a thermometer. Ok at min!

BlueBumedFly · 29/12/2008 22:40

Bless Mummy, feb conv is scary. DD was starting to shake quite a lot the other night so I stripped her off quickly and opened a window to cool her down. She had what I can only imagine was the start of a feb conv when she fell and bashed her ear quite badly on a coffee table on holiday in August. Her temp actually plummeted and then spiked and the shaking started. We had to have her checked for 24 hours for concussion.

Scary stuff, hope your DD fights this one off as soon as possible, how do you sleep? It is just so hard, all the advise sounds good about raising the immune system but when faced with a little girl who is so poorly I just want to get it gone and at the mo ABs seem the only way ahead for this week anyway. Once she is off them I am going to work really hard with the probiotics as Believer said and also have her referred so she can be better treated.

Good luck with your poorly DD. xx

Poor both of your dds, hope tonight brings lower temps all round.

Blue, of course hold onto probiotic advice for later - but equally of course crack on with ABs for now. I think your ENT referral thoughts are spot on, FWIW, its made a huge difference with dd2 having the ENT team to turn to - things the GP couldn't begin to deal with, they've done as a matter of course. Hope tomorrow is the turning point, meantime...

As for grown-up throats, try gargling with soluble aspirin, if you can - especially before eating or talking! - works well as temporary painkiller.

mumsobusy · 30/12/2008 09:46

bbf my ds is the same as your little one every 2-3 weeks he down with a temp 39-40 he has tonsillitis everytime this has been going on for the last 2 years even in the summer we get it. He has been on antibiotics non stop. Ive recently come across Minadex Tonic its a vitamin which you give children during and after illness it builds their immune system it has worked for him for its been 2 months why not give it a go it might work with yours

BlueBumedFly · 30/12/2008 13:49

Mumsobusy - how do you give the tonic? Can you put it into something? DD has serious spoon/syringe phobia after so many meds, I really need something I can hide! I like the idea though for sure.

Elibean - will have to go to the doc for me too, my ear seems to be so swollen I cannot make my teeth meet at the back.... that is just not right eh?

Elibean · 30/12/2008 14:19

Yikes, no, it isn't - get thee to the GP, Blue! How is dd today?

Like the sound of the tonic, will see if I can get it for the dds

mummynumnum · 30/12/2008 14:31

How is dd today?

My dd has got worse today and temps started to spike about hour ago. I have now brought fwd docs appt to 430 today from tomorrow morn and praying calpol and ibuprofen will keep temp down to then.

probiotics later when she is well i think!

BlueBumedFly · 30/12/2008 20:49

Elibean - though not, will be off to the GP tomorrow. It feels like there is a metal wire between my ear and my nose, very bleugh.

DD is fighting back glad to say but obviously still has a sore throat. Strange, we went out this morning for a walk and wrapped her up in warm everything, hats, hoods, scarves, coats, gloves, fleeces, suddenly she just broke down which is very unlike her and I had to carry her back to the car. Usually she would forgo her fave stuffed toy rather than be carried so she really must have been feeling like rubbish. Poor pickle, we just had to get out of the house before one of us went stir crazy but in retrospect it was a bad idea. La-di-da.

Mummynumnum - How did the docs go? Poor DD, what did the doc say? xx

mumsobusy · 30/12/2008 23:38

The tonic is given 3 times a day my ds fussy about medicine too he actually freaks when he see medicine the only one he will drink is in his words (purple one) which is Calpol I didnt have any problems with this one it has a sweet taste. I would try putting it in his milk

mumsobusy · 31/12/2008 00:02

I just went to read the bottle 6 months - 3year old take 1 spoon twice a day.
3 to 12 take 1 spoon 3 times a day.
Adults take 2 spoons 3 times a day.

It can be taken by spoon or stirred into milk or water after meals

mummynumnum · 31/12/2008 09:24

Gave her salbutamol for cough.

later on high temps, delirious, trip to out of hours and then convulsion later so back to a and e. Had xray and urine checked and all ok. back at home just managing temps.

BlueBumedFly · 31/12/2008 10:30

mummymum , oh good grief how very very upsetting for you all. You have must very best wishes that this one passes soon for you. What can I say, how dreadful, am sending a really big hug xxxx

Mumo - many thanks for the info, will buy some this week xx

OP posts:
Elibean · 31/12/2008 13:12

mummy, sounds like a very stressful and worrying night, I'm so sorry...glad the tests checked out ok, and hope the temps are down and manageable v v soon.

Thanks for tonic info, am going to try and get some!

How's dd, and how's your ear, Blue? Did you see GP?

BlueBumedFly · 31/12/2008 13:37

Elibean - getting there very slowly I think but not a patch on poor Mummynumnum so I am actually now thanking my lucky stars! DD is very tired and fragile but her temp has not regulated so I am hoping the ABs are now finally kicking in. planning on staying in and putting up with the cabin fever for a few more days in the hope she recovers in time to go back to Nursery on Monday.

January is going to be hell on toast. My oldest step DD has spinal surgery and my FIL is having chemo for lung cancer and is very poorly now. So, need to get little DD fighting fit so she does not pass any bugs onto those two as they will not be able to stand any bugs with their treatments.

La-di-da, what does not kill you makes you stronger as they say so hoping to be the strongest mummy in town by February!

OP posts:
mummynumnum · 31/12/2008 14:48

temps not good and all manic again. just dont know what to do.

BlueBumedFly · 31/12/2008 15:21

Would there be any point in going back to A&E? What ABs are you on? Are they likely to kick in soon?

OP posts:
Elibean · 31/12/2008 18:54

God, Mummy, what a nightmare. Did they tell you what to do last night, if the same thing happened again? How many days has it been now? I think that powerless feeling when the temps start to go up is awful, I'm so sorry. You must be exhausted.

Blue, glad dd is slowly getting there...my robust dd1 was pretty fragile for a few days after the 'flu thingy she had, so am not surprised your much younger dd is too. A lot on your plate...is your DSD having scoliosis op?

BlueBumedFly · 31/12/2008 20:14

yes elibean, 2 ops, one to prep and remove rib and fuse a few vertebrae then one to put the rods in a week later. Do you have any experience? We are terrified of course but dd is holding out really well bless her xx

OP posts:
Elibean · 31/12/2008 22:17

NOt me directly, but dh's neice....it was a while ago though. I can ask him if you want to know anything, but fwiw she's now grown up and married and fine

I think it is a fairly long, slow recovery though....but am sure you've been told that already. WIshing you, and especially her, lots of luck!

BlueBumedFly · 01/01/2009 12:17

thanks elibean, she is due to have her first op end of jan and we hope to be back at school full time just before Easter half term, only time will tell xx

OP posts:
mummynumnum · 01/01/2009 20:42

just bring her back if gets worse, virus and ab's wont do anything.....they are always very good to be fair.

temp seems to be better today. she has eaten as well-so all good. the night time seems to be the test. I am shattered. she is due to go to nursery tomorrow but feel very reluctant to send her.

BlueBumedFly · 01/01/2009 23:06

I was trying to post from my handheld to save logging on but my signal has gone doo-lally so you might get 2 messages from me.

What I was trying to post was... along the lines of.....

Do you have to work tomorrow Mummy? If not and if DD is fighting fit and ready for some distraction, could you take her in and get some well earned rest yourself and then perhaps collect early?

You must be shattered. On the other hand, if DD does go to Nursery and her immune system is low she might get something else on top? So hard. I am just wanting to get back to normal to be completely honest.

I tried to sleep today during DD's 2 hour lunch sleep. DH went out and took the older girls so the house was all quiet.... then 3 kindhearted people called me to see how DD was!! Ahahhhhhhhh

Good luck honey, hope you get sorted very soon and you and your DD get the rest you need to recover properly.

Happy New Year? Keep in touch xx

OP posts:
Elibean · 02/01/2009 13:50

Good luck both of you, this coming week, I wish you both normality (and health!) to start the New Year...xx
