Today he has a temperature, says he aches and his eyes hurt. He is alert thought less energetic than usual. Is this normal after these Boosters? Never really known him to show any reactions after immunisations before. A bit worried.

DS had those (preschool booster plus MMR) at the start of last week (we had been going to space them out and possibly even go with single jabs, but we're going to India at the start of January and I consider that vaccinating him now against diseases that are pretty common out there is definitely the lesser of two evils; he's getting typhoid and Hep A jabs at the end of the month, if anyone would like to share horror stories about those).

He had very sore arms for the first afternoon/evening, one of which was still a bit sore the next morning, and he was grumpy and irritable for about 18 hours or so after the jabs, but then was back to normal.

thenewme · 12/12/2008 19:06

All I would say is keep an eye on the injection site.

noiamnot · 12/12/2008 19:10

I am sorry I upset you.

I don't have a problem with vaccinations per se (my kids have everything but mmr) but pumping that much into their systems all at once is asking for trouble. Sure, some kids will be fine but if you look at it you are giving mini-doses of all those diseases into your child at once. That is a lot to ask of a 6 year old's immune system.

Nurses and doctors say it's ok because that is the government vaccination schedule.

I would never dump all that into my kid at once.

Seriously get some echnicachea if you don't have some already and give high doses of it, as well as cod liver oil and vit. c and a good multi for at least 2 weeks.

CrushWithEyeliner · 12/12/2008 19:12

wow that is a lot at once why on earth so many?

No wonder he feels rough

FleurLeChaunte · 12/12/2008 19:13

That is the standard pre school booster now.

CrushWithEyeliner · 12/12/2008 19:19

wow really? That just seems like a lot for a childs system, but I feel strongly about singles so I would say that I suppose.

Can't believe the nurse said there would be no reaction to you no wonder you are confused. There is always a risk of reaction - think of how many chemicals in his system at once from an artificial site. I think this kind of reaction is normal but do call NHS and keep an eye on the site as tnm says...

"Call NHS direct for some reassurance and don't let a few, ahem, nutcases make you feel bad." Really don't get this comment at all - what is nutty about feeling that this is a lot of vaccinations at once?

FleurLeChaunte · 12/12/2008 19:22

Probably mean't that the scare mongering on the thread wasn't really necessary, with which I agree.

OP posts:
dinny · 12/12/2008 19:29

but children can be and are damaged by vaccines, it's not scaremongering by lunatics

not suggested your ds has been damaged, but you make a decision to have your child vaccinated and should be aware of the benefits AND risks IMO

noiamnot · 12/12/2008 19:30

you were already a bit scared fleur

FleurLeChaunte · 12/12/2008 19:34

If possible I think it would be useful to start a thread to debate this. Not here because I just wanted a bit of advice.

Dinny if you read my previous thread you would see that my ds has High Functioning Autism and he had the vaccinations a year late. I made myself aware as much as I was able with regard to the Risks and the Benefits. I was told by a "Health Professional" that there would be no side effects and through previous experience with ds I had no reason to doubt this.

Vitamin A is in cod liver oil and will help deal with the measles part of the MMR - you can get nice tasting cod liver oil these days. I have mini capsules (nordic naturals) which I give to ds2 and ds3 in a spoon of honey or chocolate. They love it. It is worth oaying extra for decent cod liver oil that has been treated to have heavy metals removed. Otherwise you'll give a nice old dose of toxic ocean as well. Have a look at the packaging - it will say if it has been (although tbh you can usually tell from the price).

Malt extract is a good immune booster as well and tastes delicious. I'm going to get myself some this weekend as I have been knocked out with a virus for weeks.

Something like Floradix is a good mix of everything - lots of vitamins and easy for kids to take.

And of course lots of fresh fruit and veg.

Lots of live yoghurt as well, or probiotic mixed into kiddies yoghurt.

dinny · 12/12/2008 19:37

you will always get opinions as it's such a contentious subject

WhatFreshMistletoeIsThis · 12/12/2008 19:38

Fleur try not to worry - you have made a careful decision based on what you know, and you have your son's best interests at heart. That's all any of us can do for our children, and sadly life is not risk free.

If Calpol is making him well enough to charge around then he's not in too much of a bad way, just keep an eye on him and don't be worried about calling NHS Direct if you're concerned. I'm sure he'll be just fine

There is an awful lot of evidence to weigh up about vax and the MMR, and afaik none of it is conclusive plus a lot of it is mediated by reporters looking for a sensational story, so it's REALLY hard for parents to make a good, informed decision.

FleurLeChaunte · 12/12/2008 19:40

Thanks jimjams, will take a list out with me tommorrow. He already has a multi vitamin every day anyway as he is not the best eater due to his HFA. Live yoghurt a great idea. He is ok with yoghurt so will get some in.

CrushWithEyeliner · 12/12/2008 19:40

Oh come on who was scaremongering? Anyone would say that was a lot of vaccines in one go.

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 12/12/2008 19:40

Just seen the HFA bit- don't give malt extract if you have any concerns about gluten (sorry if teaching grandma to suck eggs).

But the rest is fine and you can get gluten free floradix.

FleurLeChaunte · 12/12/2008 19:41

Go away and start another thread will you please dinny. You are very tenacious but this is not the best place for it imo.

OP posts:
FleurLeChaunte · 12/12/2008 19:45

Bloody Hell it is not something I went and specifically asked for! "Please overwhem my son with vaccinations so he can be really ill Ms Nurse!". I thought I was doing the right thing and tbh I still do, although when the time comes for dd I will probably get one jab done on alternate months but that was NOT the advice I was given from a previously excellent nurse and Health Visitor. Just give it a rest will you. I have had some fab advice, lets just leave it there.

OP posts:
WhatFreshMistletoeIsThis · 12/12/2008 19:46

I think if someone comes on asking for advice about whether to give that many vax then it's perfectly reasonable to voice concerns if you have them - but given that this is after the event it's not helpful at all and will only worry Fleur half to death.
