How long does your 2 year old sleep....

Because mine needs loads. She goes to bed at about 7:00, sleeps until about 8:00 and needs about a 2 hour nap in the day time. She has lots of exercise and eats tons.

Most of my friends 2 year olds don't have a nap. Have tried dropping it, but just didn't work....

2 yr old DD 7 til 8 most days and a 2 hr nap in day and would DIE if she dropped the nap as now have a non-sleeping DS, 8 weeks, sent to punish me for my lovely sleeping girl!

Hi everyone!
MAOMI83 says that childrens that go to bed late, wake up earlier? and that is a book saying that as well? Well, we need to be carefull about what books says, they'll be lots of books about everything in the world that any of us wants to write, and it doesn't means is true, just to be printed off in paper.
I am from Spain, we go to bed late in general, and the kids later than here, and I can assure you that's not true, not just for my experience, is for everyone around there, they'll wake up later, obviously, they'll sleep how much they need.
I don't know at what time your partners are back at home from work, but mine never before 7'45pm, so if I'll follow the UK way, my son'll never see his dad. He goes to bed between 10'30-11'00pm, sleep in one go 'til 10'00 . Plus his 2 hrs nap during the day.
Good luck and sleep to all of you!

I found that when mine were babies they needed to go to bed very early and slept better if they did. I'm sure it is true for some children. But as mine got older, bedtime gradually moved to 7pm. Both my 4.11 year old and my 2.6 year old go up for a bath at seven. Older one is asleep by 7.30 most nights but the little one is not (usually 8.15pm). He is very rarely asleep earlier unless he hasn't had a nap. But then we need to do two bedtimes in one bedroom. That obviously isn't a runner even if the theory was true for my children.

All children have different sleep needs and different patterns. If you read it in a book and it worked for your child that's great but it doesn't necessarily mean anything for anybody else's life. From this thread you can see all the little ones who need stacks of sleep and those that don't. My DS2 is perfectly content, happy and healthy on his 10-11 hours per day. Others need 13 or 14. They are not machines all programmed to do the same thing!

tassisssss · 09/12/2008 18:23

OP, mine is almost exactly the same as yours. 7pm bed, 8am would be common for up and in the cot for 2.5 hours at lunch (I think she often's awake for about 30mins of that.

My ds had naps at lunch and 11-12 hours in bed at night until he was 3 so I'm really hoping dd is the same. She was 2 in Sept.

Mellin · 09/12/2008 18:28

Lord, this thread is depressing me.

I am lucky if dd (2.1) sleeps 10 hours at night, sometimes she naps around 40 mins during the day. Always naps at nursery but is a nightmare to get her to sleep those evenings.

I vowed to stay away from sleep threads when she was a nightmare sleeper as a baby. I see I should have stuck to that vow now she is a toddler!

notevenamousie · 09/12/2008 19:13

Actually mine has slept through a few nights a week for the last few weeks, I have had 8 hours sleep twice in the last 10 days, which is bliss.

DD is 1.11 and sleeps 7ish til 5-6ish with one or two night time wakings most nights, sometimes worse. She does usually nap, an hour ish, and is very difficult if she doesn't/ won't. I am just destined not to have a sleeper - but the 8 hours sleep nights have been utterly bliss!

MeAndMyMonkey · 09/12/2008 19:27

Also disagree that children who go to bed later wake up earlier - dd is 2 and never ever asleep before 8 (she simply wouldn't be tired enough for one thing) but am sorry to admit she never wakes up before 8am either, usually 8.30 and sometimes 9 .
Plus, I am ashamed to say she is sleeping for approx 1.5 hours in the day as well, after an initial battle to give up the daytime nap, she has now returned to it with a vengeance.
Sorry all!

My DS (21m) won't go to sleep earlier than 8 whether he has a nap or not - despite my efforts to get him to go to bed earlier. If I take him up at half 7 he will generally stay awake (seeming obviously wide awake, messing me about and making idle chit-chat) until the usual time. On my days off/weekends he generally will wake around 5 in the morning and come into our bed to sleep ( but he goes back to sleep straight away and this means I can too). He then wakes much later from our bed - around 7:45. If he has managed to stay in his own bed all night he'll generally wake a little earlier - say 6am.

He will sometimes have long naps for up to 3 hours (more often it will be less) but will no longer lie down with me willingly to have a nap - so has to be in pushchair or car (if I am lucky I can transfer him to the cot when I get home and he'll sleep there but this is becoming a rare occurrance now ) At nursery he'll usually have about an hour and a half in the daytime. I have been known when desperate to push him arond the block in the pushchair at around lunchtime and then leave him sleeping in it in the hallway!

Bedtime routine for us is to start getting ready for bed, stories, toothbrushing etc at 7:30 and in bed around 8-8:30pm.

He's started to () manage to get through the day unscathed without a nap (albeit a bit grumpy). I am worrying now that it is the slippery slope as I don't want him to drop naps.

mybabywakesupsinging · 10/12/2008 00:07

ds1 (3) bed at 8:30 sings/chats to himself for 30-60 mins, sleeps till 7am. Dropped nap at about 21 months.
ds2 (18 months) bed at 10, sleeps till 6 when I feed him then usually snoozes again till 7:30ish. Still sleeps for a hour or so in the day most days.
I am so glad they don't need 12 hours. I work long hours and would never see them...

stressedsanta · 10/12/2008 13:06

my ds is 2.4 and he goes to bed at 7pm and sleeps through until 6 maybe 7am
he also has a daytime nap that can vary between 1-2 hrs

i like sleep

honeybunmum · 10/12/2008 13:24

I've got the DC in a great routine, what do I do about DH who set the house alarm off at 5am today and we couldn't switch it off until we took it to pieces! DC slept through the lot.

PinkPoinsettias · 10/12/2008 13:27

ds is 2.4 and sleeps from 19.30 - anything from 7.30 to 10.00.

he rarely sleeps in the day but occasionally nods off and when he does it's often for upwards of 2 hours

dp and i are big sleepers too though so no surprise our kids follow suit!

Swedes · 10/12/2008 13:36

My 3 year old still has a two hour nap (immediately after lunch) in the afternoon and she goes to bed at about 8.30/9pm and gets up at about 7.30am.

My 17 month old has a 3 hour nap in the afternoon (immediately after lunch) and goes to bed at about 8.30/9pm and gets up at around 8/8.30am.

My older boys were great nappers too. DS1 (now 16) gave up his afternoon nap when he was about 3.5years and DS2 (now 13) gave up his nap when he was 4 as I remember worrying how he was ever going to manage a whole day at school.

Why on earth do you want to drop the nap? Long live the nap.

keresley · 10/12/2008 21:17

My 4 year old son sleeps from 7.30 pm till 7.00 am and still has a 2 hour nap in the afternoon.

vesela · 10/12/2008 21:55

DD (20 months) goes to bed at about 9.30 and wakes up at 8.30/9. She also sleeps about 2-3 hours in the afternoon.

A later bedtime just seems to work better(even though my DH and I both work at home). She's happy and has no trouble concentrating in the evenings.

The only time it's a bit difficult is when we have a babysitter - which has only been a couple of times - and I wonder if I'm going to manage to get her to sleep by 8. But I give her an earlier nap, and then she doesn't seem to notice the difference. The flip side is that the later bedtime is great for things like family meals out.

turkeyandherbstuffinggarden · 10/12/2008 22:10

ds is 2.5 months.he's just dropped his nap after waking at 5am for a couple of months. If we go out the car he'll go out like a light....

He's down at 7pm and wakes anything from 6am to 6.30/45am. usually earlier end of the scale.

I'm very envious of the 12 hours a night and 2 hour naps. DS did 2 hours naps religiously since a baby but just suddenly decided at around 2 that he wasn't up for that anymore. Newly pregnant I was gutted - thank god for cbeebies......
