Went shopping on Saturday, DD looked tired and had a little sleep in the car on the way to my mum and dads. When we got there, she said that her neck started to hurt, she had a blotchy rash. Later she started grabbing at her neck and head saying that they hurt. So we went to NSH direct, they did her temperature, checked her neck, checked her ears and throat etc. They said that she was fine, they appreciated she was not fine as to how we knew her, but there was nothing they could see wrong, possibly a viral infection. We took her home, and she did do the whole neck/back hurting thing again, but we just soothed her til she went to sleep.
So, Sunday, she seemed fine in the morning. We decided to go out for dinner, she was fine during the starter, but when the mains came out, she had a little cry and pulled her shoulders up saying her neck hurt. She brightened up after a few minutes, we took her to my parents after dinner. There she started having what I can only describe as spasms, grabbing hold of her neck and scratching at it, screaming that her head/neck/back hurt. Her face was bright red, her eyes puffy, her neck red, she was hot and looked in pain. So we took her to A&E
A&E have told us that she has had an allergic reaction to something. They gave us piriton, and told us to go home. While she was there she had one episode of the neck hurting thing, and the doctor said she was attention seeking.

So, I have a few questions:

  1. Do you agree it could just be an allergic reaction?

We have changed our washing powder recently, though yesterday she was in clothes that were washed in the old powder. Doctor said that it could be because she was around me wearing clothes in new powder. Which leads me to question two

  1. Why would it just be her neck/back that hurts, not her legs etc which had clothes on. Why would it not be an issue with other people wearing a different powder to us?

  2. what do I do now? Do I have to re-wash her clothes? What if it was not the powder?

  3. Could it be something else? We did give her peanuts in the morning on Sat, she has had them before, but could it be a late reaction or would it be immediate?

Help!

at your gp saying attention seeking!

What is your gut feeling? Does the piriton help?

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 01/12/2008 19:37

I dont know how long the piriton should take to work, but when she was falling asleep (about 45mins after she'd had it), she did kept saying her neck was hurting, crying in pain and saying "mummy, neck hurts, please rub it".
She has done this today at the childminders, though only once, when they were going to have dinner. Childminder rubbed her neck and she was fine, ate her dinner.

(Am also cross at the attention seaking thing, if she is, she deserves a bloody oscar. I kept saying that its not like she is being ignored and she wants atteniton, she's sometimes doing it mid play, laughing along with us, and suddenly seems in pain).

could she have pulled a muscle in her neck?

I know my dd used to say she had pain somewhere when it was actually something different like a sore throat

sorry not much help just throwing some ideas at tyou

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 01/12/2008 19:48

she did slip off the chair at the childminders on fri and the cm managed to grab her by her cardi, so possible she has pulled herself. I told this to both nsh walk in centre and a&e but both ignored it

how quickly can you get an appointment with your GP? if you can get one tomorrow I would take her. if not and she keeps professing this pain I'd be tempted to take her back to A&E. I know nothing about allergies btw but I'm not sure I'd be content either.

FeelingLucky · 01/12/2008 19:51

Doesn't sound like an allergy to me. I wonder if it's an infection?
BTW- I'm no doctor, just really feel for you and hope someone more knowledgeable comes along.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 01/12/2008 19:54

I can go to the doc, just wondered if it would make me look a little neurotic! Prob can get her in on Wed/Thurs, they're aways really busy

Is her temp normal?

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 01/12/2008 19:54

yes, tepm normal.

An allergy would explain why her face was red & puffy but it wouldn't at all explain her neck pain. I'd say it's fairly out of order for the A&E dr to say it's attention seeking, and not to look into it further.

Has she got a fever now?
I think if it continues you should get her seen again tomorrow.

lulalullabye · 01/12/2008 19:57

Hi, ok, when you have an allergic reaction to something you get swelling in the throat so maybe this is why your dd says that her neck hurts. Also if there is swelling then she may feel like it is tight in that area, making it harder for her to breathe, hence causing her to panic.

As for neck pain in relation to meningitis if thats what worries you, this will not be in relation to that as to be blunt she would be extremely poorly or worse by now if it was.

I think it is hard for children to express that the inside of your throat hurts. Also and allergy to anything can happen after 2nd or 3rd time of eating, so the nut thing could be a possibilty.

Sorry not to be able to help further.

leoleomakingalist · 01/12/2008 19:58

I do not think it is a allergy. I have never heard of anyone having a reaction to someone else's washing powder . The way it 'strikes' is also quite sudden and I would have thought if it was a allergy then she would be suffering all the time she was in contact with the cause.
I agree with hatwoman - either back to A&E or emergency Dr or GP tomorrow.
Ignore the attention seeking comment .
Are her eyes ok now? Is she sleeping more than normal.

BTW I have no professional qualifications - just a mum and I believe you have to go on your gut instincts.

What do you think?

thenewme · 01/12/2008 19:58

at doctor.

I would demand a GP appointment for tmw or go to A&E and refuse to go until she is checked for meningitis and other nasties.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 01/12/2008 20:05

have done the glass test when there has been a rash, though it is more blotchy than anything else, and she can move her neck well / tolerate light which I think is a good sign.
She isnt sleeping any more than usual, and her eyes seem a lot less puffy, though still look sore.
Oh, she also has a sore mouth which the dr said was excema (sorry for sp!) caused by the allergic reaction, which I'm sure happened before we changed wash powder.

she seems perfectly well within herself iyswim, she went to the cm this morning as she seemed fine and when I picked her up she was singing at the top of her lungs and screaming about how "precious" the christmas tree was.

She is complaining about her neck now

OP posts:
FeelingLucky · 01/12/2008 20:26

No you're not neurotic, and don;t let the doctor tell you that either.

leoleomakingalist · 01/12/2008 20:35

Everyone has a story about a Dr telling a parent that they are neurotic but trust your mummy instincts she is your child and if you feel that something is wrong go back.
My sister was told that she was a neurotic first parent and my nephew progressively got worse and then my dad insisted my sister took him to Great Ormand Street (he was very much like that-luckily) and on arrival he had a heart attack from some sort of kidney failure. The hospital said it was lucky he was at the hospital when he was. (He is now in his 20's so all okay in the end despite losing a kidney).
Don't want to scare anyone I just wanted to remind us all to trust ourselves.
Obviously your parents were there on 2 occasions and didn't think you were neurotic.

thenewme · 01/12/2008 21:00

M ex GP told me for months there was nothing wrong with my DD and I believed him. I trusted him and I wanted to believe him. He was wrong.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 01/12/2008 21:05

She has been screaming again. trying to get her to go to sleep but she is really not happy

OP posts:
ElfOnTheTopShelf · 01/12/2008 21:05

(thenewme, what was wrong?)

OP posts:
hatwoman · 01/12/2008 21:10

lula has reminded me that dd once complained of neck pain and it turned out she meant a sore throat. hopefully, of course, this whole thing can be explained and is nothing serious but I don;t think you;d be neurotic to get her checked again.

StarlightAssumptionMcKenzie · 01/12/2008 21:11

Take her back to A&E. Tell the NHS told you to if you're worried about appearing neurotic.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 01/12/2008 21:27

am a wimp. have called my mum up, she is on her way. DD now has spots.
Could it be chicken pox?

OP posts:
StarlightAssumptionMcKenzie · 01/12/2008 21:32

wot are they like and where are they?

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 01/12/2008 21:34

mouth, above her eye brows, in her ear. But her ear is scabby. the rest are red spots, a bit like heat spots.
