darling is 20mths robust, chatty confident fellow.
Chest infection, vomiting for 9 days, 7 of those on antibiotics. Now has rapid shallow breathing, heaving chest and temp. And vomiting up calpol. Fluids ok and within himself he is still there a bit. A trooper it seems.
He got better last Friday but went downhill again sunday night Monday morning. GP advised cautious 48 hr watch but if no improvement then we were looking at a pneumonia type thing and he would need paediatric care.
I am not a panicky type at all and am so worried. He is my 3rd child btw.
Wish him luck appt at 10:40

abraid · 27/11/2008 08:51

MY son had pneumonia at 11 months and was hospitalised. He got better very quickly.

I know what it's like. Good luck.

Buda · 27/11/2008 09:55

Hoping he is on the mend today Piffle.

Elibean · 27/11/2008 13:20

How is he now, Piffle?

So sorry he's so unwell, anything to do with breathing is the pits

abcmum · 27/11/2008 15:16

Get well soon little man x

Piffle · 27/11/2008 18:25

update.
He was admitted and on 3hrly nebulosers which helped loads. Plus steroids. His breathing improved so we are home but he is far from well. But def better.
Now have to convince him that the inhaler spacer is a good thing not something to fight...
Right must go and have a glass of wine
Thanks for all the messages!

oh excellent! Glad he's doing better.
We got DD to use her spacer by 'taking turns' having a go on it. A bit like passing a bong around

Piffle · 27/11/2008 20:42

we tried him doing it on the bear, mummy the rabbit etc
But now he has his strength back, with it comes the fight.
Funnily restraining him with close affection and talking is the only way we can get it into him... I need help to do it!
Dp off to Florida for work sunday til Friday... Is that an AIBU title? Hmm

OH the inhauler can be really hard work on your own. Worse comes to the worst a towel wrapped round them or choclate buttos

glasgowstyle · 27/11/2008 20:52

Happy he's doing better - hope he's ok xxx

strawberrycornetto · 27/11/2008 20:52

Hello Piffle. My DS was also admitted with pneumonia yeterday, and we are home today in a similar position. Hope your DS gets well soon, its scary, isn't it. I could also do with a glass of wine - or just some sleep. Did you stay in with your DS last night?

Piffle · 27/11/2008 20:59

Yes I did he woke every 40mins do ended up in with me so I could calm him easier... Am v shattered indeed. Dp stayed off to care for other two babes.
Ds2 just woke now simply for head stroke and reassurance.
Seeing a very different side to him and also he has lost 1.2kg in weight
hope your ds is ok cornetto? How old is he?
Omg how tiring are hospital stays huh? Noisy places

So glad he is on he mend Piffle. Fighting the spacer is good!

How about doing the revere psychology thing and saying he can't use it?? It would work with mine!

So - when are you coming to visit??

Piffle · 27/11/2008 21:33

as soon as I can afford manage it buda. Have so wanted to travel there!
Even better having the very lovely Buda there to see too!
Yes agree the fighting is good although does not feel like it at the time!

OP posts:
Buda · 27/11/2008 21:36

Am sure the fighting feels crap but the fact that he CAN fight is good! you do not want him lying listlessy (sp?).

Buda · 27/11/2008 21:38

Oh - do you do vitamins?

I swear by them after I forgot to resotck last year and DS ended up really sick.

We do Vivioptal Junior and Eskimo Kids. If i forget DS gets sick. The Vivioptal is prop the most important for immune systems etc.

Boco · 27/11/2008 21:39

Oh dear I know how you feel, I've been a zombie for days - dd wakes at 4 every morning as that seems to be the worst time with breathing and coughing. She's really much better today though, think we've turned a corner at last and she ate some dinner. She's also lost weight and looking very pale and skinny.

I find bribery and distraction only thing that works with the spacer. I bought her a disco pen - it's a pen and you press a button on the end and it flashes disco lights. During the ten puffs of ventolin and 3 of steroid we have the lights off, disco pen flashing and me adn dd1 sing 'dd2's a disco bayyyybbbeeee'. Seems to have worked for a whole 3 days.

Hope he gets better soon and you get some rest.

tissy · 27/11/2008 21:41

and the more he's screaming, the bigger his breaths, so he's inhaling more salbutamol (or whatever the drug is).

When dd was like this, I found it easiest to sit behind her with one arm wrapped round both of hers, and the other hand holding the spacer onto her nose and mouth, pushing her head back against my chest.

Can you sing something like "One man went o mow" for as many puffs as you need?

Piffle · 27/11/2008 21:45

I'm gonna do the soft sheet arm wrap akin to newborn swaddling... Hold his face below mine secured with a loving chin like vice grip.
And kisses...
He is fine afterwards and sleeps straight after...
He is only 20mths and while advanced language wise, this week is not a time to stretch it!
Sleeping better tonight fwiw

awwwwwwwwwww I wanted to add that I am thinking about the little sausage.

God Piff , you must've been out of your mind with worry.

Would wrapping him in a towel (wrapping it over a few times so you make him into a sausage roll) help when you give him his medication? I've always had to do this to ds for eye drops etc.

xx

hugs to your poor ds
poor babs
dd had bronchiolitis that they thought was pneumonia almost a year ago now. she picked up really quickly once we were in hosp. hoping you see the same speedy recovery for your ds

Buda · 27/11/2008 21:54

Poor baby. And poor you!!!!

hunkermunker · 27/11/2008 22:37

Very glad he's on the road to recovery, Piff. Hope next week's not too tough and he's much better by the time DH goes away.

LOL at disco pen, Boco - just sorry you have to use it for spacer bribery

Piffle · 28/11/2008 09:30

going ok with spacer now thankfully he realises how much it helps i think. Was ok night every 4 hrs ventolin and 2ozmilk. He is still not eating but figure if he drinking, resting and breathing that food can wait.
He was 12.2kgs he is now 10.5 given he is tall he looks very thin. Scary in ten days only.
Still nowhehas stopped vomiting at least.
Thanks everyone x x
