Just curious really as ds nearly 17 months does not seem interested in walking by himself. He has been happily cruising since about 12-13 months, walking around the furniture using a little push-a-long, he will even use the walls and with some encouragment he will walk holding both my hands. He just does not seem to want to walk by himself, he has never crawled but is a 'bum shuffler'! Don't know if that makes a difference.

I have two older children ds who walked at 10 months and dd who walked at 13 months.

So, just interested really to find out whether this is out of the ordinary, I wasn't really worried about it but a few comments from other people have made me wonder . . .

Thanks Just off on school run, will check in when back.

ds1 - walked unaided at 12 months,
dd - 12.5 months
ds2 - 20++ months

MadameCastafiore · 25/11/2008 14:55

DD - 9.5 months
DS - the same although he was a big fat lump so I was hoping for a repreive until he was at least 2!

duchesse · 25/11/2008 14:56

10 months on the dot for all three. (b, g, g)

stillstanding · 25/11/2008 14:57

DS walked at 17 months.

I really wouldnt worry about it, marchbunny - it sounds like he is practically there.

duchesse · 25/11/2008 14:58

And do not worry, please; bum shufflers often walk later because they can achieve the twin aims of holding something and getting about, without having suffer the vertigo... He will walk. He has just developed alternative locomotion that actually works.

MrsTittleMouse · 25/11/2008 15:00

17/18 months
It's not as unusual as you'd think to be walking so late - even though all the Mums I know seem to think that 12 months is "normal".

DustyTv · 25/11/2008 15:00

DD was 8 mo when she took her first undaided steps, she properly started walking a couple of weeks later. She had been cruising since 6mo, she kinda missed the whole crawling stage. I mean she did crawl but it seemed like she crawled one day and never did it again then started walking IYSWIM.

She is 12mo now and does not stop, she wears me out, where do they get their energy from????

I don't think it is out of the ordinary, every child will do things in their own time. You say your DS is walking holding on and is cruising around the furniature, so he can walk just not ready to go it on his own yet.

Maveta · 25/11/2008 15:02

Almost 21 months. Didn't crawl until 14 months, and started cruising at about 17 months. I despaired and thought she was going to sit on her pretty little bum forever...

stepfordwife · 25/11/2008 15:14

ds1 14 months
ds2 13 months
dd 12 months

SharkyandGeorge · 25/11/2008 15:14

DD1 was a bum shuffler and finally walked about 18 months.

stepfordwife · 25/11/2008 15:16

..but 17 months not out of the ordinary, so don't worry. sounds like he's about to take his first steps any day now..

Fennel · 25/11/2008 15:18

Mine were all 13-15 months but I know lots who didn't walk until about 18 months.

BitOfFun · 25/11/2008 15:19

14 and 16 months, both bum shufflers!

bellavita · 25/11/2008 15:21

both DS's - 11 months

bythepowerofgreyskull · 25/11/2008 15:22

DS1 10 months holding a finger but didn't let go until 16 months

DS2 11 months

sweetkitty · 25/11/2008 15:22

DD1 12 1/2 months
DD2 11 1/2 months

both were crawlers, DD1 commando crawled before crawling proper then walking, DD2 just crawled

knickerelasticjones · 25/11/2008 15:25

DD1 16 months (walked holding onto my finger from 13 mnths but would NOT let go....)
DD2 15 months - walks but only holding onto my finger.

You'd never guess they were sister

kif · 25/11/2008 15:27

18months

PortAndLemon · 25/11/2008 15:36

DS 9 months.

I'll lay money on DD (will be 8 months on Sunday) being a lot older than that when she does it.

uberalice · 25/11/2008 15:39

DS1 14 months
DS2 15 months

shootfromthehip · 25/11/2008 15:42

Was so proud when my DD walked at 8 1/2 mths- not just steps, walked. However, chasing a little baby with no common sense around soon became a problem rather than a blessing. Hoped that DS would stay put til age 5 but he cruised at 7mths, took steps at 9 and was walking at 10mths. This early/ late walking can run in families. I also know loads of people whose LO's have shown no interest in walking til 18ths plus (usually second children). Don't worry about it: as long as they are walking by the time they get to school, it really doesn't matter too much.

marchbunny · 25/11/2008 15:44

Thanks for all your replies, you have helped to put my mind at ease. I really think he does not see any need for walking at the moment, as the bum shuffling is really efficient.

Plus he has two older siblings of 9 and 5 and if he shouts loud enough he gets what he wants, they love running around after him.

Maybe he will walk on Christmas day! 4 weeks and counting
