DD1 is just 3. I started potty training her in March, wee quite successful, but poo nightmare, she go a tummy bug, so back in nappies. Then again in July. Wee great. Dry through night, no wee accidents. Brilliant! Except, poo is always by accident in her knickers. She is obviously with-holding as she will often have several poos (3 or 4) in a day, and atm most of them seem to take her by surprise. She often thinks she is doing a fart, and is surprised by a soiling incident. I eventually realised that she was constipated rather than just awkward, and decided that the best course of action was to put her back in nappies, in order to take the pressure off both of us. I was getting completely hacked off with cleaning up poo out of clothes, and leaving the house was getting harder and harder as you could guarantee that the minute we were out, she would doo a poo. Looking back, I think it probably would have been better to persevere with the knickers, nappies have been a huge step back, and now she rarely does a wee on thje potty or toilet.
I have a sticker chart for her, and she gets a sticker and a treat if she just sits on the toilet for a minute or two, but she won't even do that, she seems to be frightened of a poo coming out. She often complains that they hurt her when they come out, but tbh, I think she is with-holding so effectively, the really hard stuff is still inside her.
I took her to see a homeopath at the weekend, and have decided to give that a go for a month, even though I am very about the effectiveness. I will hopefully then get an ap't with a paediatrician at the hospital who has been recommended as an expert in this field, but I know he will immediately prescribe laxitives, which I am not worried about in itself, but would rather try other things first iykwim.
She's not keen on fruit or veg, although I offer LOADS and dd2 eats loads. She won't drink much water, but does drink juice. Bread, rice and pasta are wholemeal.
I am about to embark on linseed 'tea' to see if that's any use. She won't take any children's fibre supplements.
Sorry, that was very long, and far tmi I expect, but I really feel at the end of my tether.
*Shoul I put her back in knickers now, and start toilet training all over again? or should I wait until the actual constipation problem gets a bit better, i.e. if the homeopath works, or she starts the laxitives
*Should I sod the homeopath and head straight for the laxitives?
*How do I get her to SIT ON THE TOILET???
*This will get better, won't it?

Sorry for very long boring ranty post

Hello all, and welcome cocoqueen.
Egg, I've been told to just drop a note in at the surgery to ask for a repeat prescription.
Lilymolly, great, thanks for passing on what the nurse said. Weird how conflicting info about apple juice, but tbh I can not imagine how on earthj I would managwe to get dd to take the movicol without it.
I missed a sachet one day and dd was more constipated almost immediately! She still strains and pushes so very hard, bless her. Think we're on the laxitives for the long haul.
Cocoqueen, it took about 6 days for two sachets a day to have much of an effect on dd. Good luck, It sounds like you're both really suffering atm.

Hi

So much has happended since I last wrote. We did end up in hospital as DD ended up with a temp of 41.5 and the dr did't know what else to do. The short version is that even the hospital agreed that she was constipated and could feel it in her tummy he said to stay with the movocal and just increase the number of sachets until there is a result. She is on 6 a day and I am pleased to say after 4 days of being on 6 a day she has finally started to produce! It means that she is in nappies all the time but she is okay with this and continues to do most of her wees on the toilet. It has meant that she is happier and has enjoyed her Christmas which is big plus. The doctor in the hospital said she had an ear infection and a urine infection again. So she ended up on more stronger antibiotics. He agreed that they were both probably due to her constipation! Since her system has been flowing a little more she has been healthier in herself.
Now we are trying to reduce the sachets each day to see what effect it has and if she will continue to hold it in or not. I will let you know.
Also we have seen a homeopath. He has recommended some stuff and we have to go back in a month.
We have also been referred to a clinic to try and deal with the pyschological side. This is the big one for me as I think if we can crack that then she will be okay.
All in all we are feeling that there is no more that we can do at the moment and that people are now trying to help us out.
My advice - be referred and keep going.
It is lovely to have a happy child back for the moment. Now we can tackle the potty training side again.

Bye for now,

Coco

Hello everyone I am new to this site and am amazed to find other people in the same situation as us.
My daughter has had problems pooing since she started potty training we have had her backwards and forwards to the doctors over the past 2 years. She was put on lactulose to start with with the doses being gradually increased and increased it was ridiculous. She still wouldn't go the toilet she would just go in her pants. The doc then gave us senakot to take as well as lactulose. Again very messy and she still wouldn't go to the toilet. Last week she was put on Movicol. She started with 2 sachets one in the morning and one at night. After 2 very stressful days of upset tummy/cramping pains and her trying not to go the toilet, she finally went during the night (big and solid). She went to the toilet in the morning and did another poo and then again in the afternoon. Since then she has not been again properly it has just been very very runny and very messy - still going in her pants and not going to the toilet. Yesterday we didn't give her anything to see if it would become less runny. We have also made her go to the toilet every hour and try to go - not easy with a 4 year old having a major tantrum at the thought of doing a poo on the toilet. Really need her to go the loo she goes back to school on Wed.
