DD is obviously in agony and I can't fix it. Am losing my mind.

She is sleeping now but will be awake soon. Last night she woke crying at 11, completely inconsolable and wouldn't even settle with a feed. She eventually fell asleep at half 1. Today she has been crying all day due to being tired and probably in pain too. Went to bed at 8 and was up less than two hours later inconsolable, but settled with a feed. Will probably be up soon. I am exhausted, got hardly any sleep and have a toddler to look after as well as DD tomorrow so no chance of rest. I think she's teething but I don't know, have tried calpol, ibuprofen and teething powders which have done nothing. I can't even tell if she's ill. Was thinking about anbesol but am worried it will make her mouth too numb to breastfeed. Am feeling powerless and shit. Please help

ds1 had ear infections that burst his eardrums several times at about this age. its bloody stressful, coz you dont have any idea whats making them scream and scream till the eardrum bursts - not for the first couple of times anyway and even when you do, theres sod all you can do unless you catch it early (antibiotics)
'course, it may not be that... but i know where youre coming from. i had 3 under 3 and the stress of one or more of them being in distress was killer.

NappiesGalore · 03/10/2008 00:03

lots of people dont have a thermometers, and actually i can always tell by feel. almost to the exact degree oddly enough. my mums a mw/medical tho, so i have one or 5 around anyway, out of conditioning

charchargabor · 03/10/2008 00:07

She always feeds fine, is a real boob addict so nothing puts her off. She does feed during the night, but the way she is atm is not like her at all. She's really distressed. It's like she's desperately seeking relief. She's not eating much though. God this is hard.

Sorry please ignore that last post of mine, just realised you said that last night she wouldn't even settle with a feed.

Its so horrible when they're crying and you don't know whats wrong with them. We got so used to it we just assumed ears until we know otherwise. He's 6 now so its a lot easier (and going in for a second set of grommets next week). I still remember all those sleepless nights though

Hope she settles and you manage to get a half decent sleep. Are you doing two hourly pain killers, i.e. neurofen at 12, calpol at 2, neurofen at 4?

charchargabor · 03/10/2008 00:09

I can usually tell by touch as well, but am probably missing something. I will take her to the doctors in the morning if I can get an appointment or the walk in.

i recently found out that you can give ibuprofen and calpol at the same time - in this situation it might be worth a try?

ds2 was a real boob addict and would feed no matter what too. even now, his milk in a bottle is like crack to him, will solve any/all problems in an instant and heaven help you if you dont have one to give him when he melts down or gets out of school

am off to bed myself, all 3 are sniffing and coughing and i'll end up sleeping with prob all of them by morning - im with you in spirit tho! hope your nite holds a bit more rest for you and that the doc has some answers/help for you in the morn. night!

charchargabor · 03/10/2008 00:21

I'm going to try and get some sleep now too. Am sure DD will be up soon but she can come in with us. I've heard you can give at same time and staggered NG, but jury's out on which is better. Might try it if she gets up later. Thankyou everybody for your help, wouldn't have thought of an ear infection. Night.

Night, hope she sleeps well. Please update tomorrow as to how you got on. x

charchargabor · 03/10/2008 07:36

Well she was only a bit unsettled for the rest of the night, no screaming and only fed twice. She seems quite happy this morning. Now I'm not sure what to do.

If you're piggybacking the meds, she might not seem to have much of a temperature as they will be keeping that under control. Try and take her to the doctors - otherwise you'll be kicking yourself at midnight tonight if it happens again!

charchargabor · 03/10/2008 08:15

Good point 4arms. Will ring the doctor's now.

How did you get on charchar?

charchargabor · 03/10/2008 11:26

Doc said she's fine, no ear infection or anything. So am assuming it must just be her teeth. Have bought some anbesol liquid to put on at bedtime in the hopes it will relieve her pain a bit. Thanks for asking.

mumhadenough · 03/10/2008 11:39

Oh thats good at least eh!

charchargabor · 03/10/2008 18:26

Countdown to bedtime now, am about to bath her. Have got Anbesol liquid to try. Am planning to rub some on her gums after she's fallen asleep so she isn't too numb to bf. Does anyone know if this will work, and is Anbesol any good? Posted a thread about it but no replies.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/10/2008 18:31

Is it normally when shes lying down? I'd consider reflux as an option if she doesnt settle. I hope you both have a restful night tonight.

charchargabor · 03/10/2008 18:50

It is, as it's when she wakes at night mostly, only a bit fussy in the day. Isn't 14 months a bit old for reflux? She's been fine before.

OP posts:
FourArms · 03/10/2008 19:51

Anbesol is fantastic - I use it as an adult when I get pain from my wisdom teeth. I don't think it will make her mouth numb for bfing though, unless you tip the bottle in Think they also do a gel which is designed for littlies?

I'd say no to reflux if she's been all right up to now. Is she pooing and weeing regularly? Constipated? Could she have trapped wind - lots of beans or peas in the last few days?

charchargabor · 03/10/2008 20:00

Well I've put the anbesol on, but she latched on straight after I put it on so it prob washed off before it had a chance to work. Think it was the funny tingly sensation that disturbed her. I looked for the gel but they only had the liquid in Boots. Will remember to use it when my wisdom teeth start coming in again. She's weeing plenty and pooing enough and doesn't seem constipated. She's had no more beans/peas than she normally has recently. I was almost disappointed that there was nothing wrong with her they could fix at the doctors because I'm not doing a good job at helping her right now. That makes me sounds even worse than I actually am. Well she's in bed so will see in an hour or so whether the anbesol has helped or not.

OP posts:
charchargabor · 03/10/2008 20:18

Didn't work She's just been up. Settled with me rubbing her back but was quite fussy. That's half an hour after going to bed. I give up. I cannot fix whatever is wrong with her. I would normally cope with this so well, but I am just struggling. Going to be a fun night

OP posts:
BoysAreLikeDogs · 03/10/2008 20:23

awww

Now, if she is asleep at the moment, pop off and get your head down, eh?

I feel for you, it's hard hard work.

charchargabor · 03/10/2008 20:26

Would if I could but DP is getting up to go to work soon and would disturb me. Doubt would sleep anyway my body won't switch off. But thankyou for being understanding and posting.

mumhadenough · 03/10/2008 21:48

Charchar, sorry to hear you're heading for another night of it.

Do you genuinely think she's in pain? Is it possible she's just being a wee madam, not wanting to be in bed, waking up and wanting to be with mummy?
