thought it was an asthma attack earlier. am not sure now. she isnt wheezing, or problems breathing, just a horrible hacking cough. she is propped up on loads of pillows.

think she has a cold. but it never comes out through her nose, always goes to her throat and makes her cough.

avenanap · 29/09/2008 22:42

Is it a barky cough?

misdee · 29/09/2008 22:43

yes.

OP posts:
misdee · 29/09/2008 22:43

but not seal barking like croup

OP posts:
avenanap · 29/09/2008 22:44

Is she awake and barking? Lip colour? can she talk to you?

Tis croup by the way.

misdee · 29/09/2008 22:45

she is awake. lip colour fine, all colour fine, chest not recessing.

she is 8 though?

OP posts:
lovecamping · 29/09/2008 22:46

could she have the beginnings of croup? has she been sick?

dd2's croup attacks usually start with a high temperature, vomit, barking cough, trip to A&E for steriod jab, home and fine for the rest of the winter.

avenanap · 29/09/2008 22:46

Hmm. Has she had all her jabs? Has she had a cough like this before?

lovecamping · 29/09/2008 22:48

last winter when we were last at a&e, there was a girl about 6 yrs old and she was recovering from a croup attack.

misdee · 29/09/2008 22:49

she has this cough everytime she gets a cold. she has multiple allergies but never gets a snotty nose, gp says its just runs down the back of her throat. the other two will snot out a cold iyswim.

she has had all her jabs.

no temp, nothing, except for this cough.

OP posts:
avenanap · 29/09/2008 22:51

Is it more of a dry/tickly cough? Does it come in bouts (loads at once, then eases off) with chest tightness?

misdee · 29/09/2008 22:53

yes. i thnk so. she has used her inhaler tonight more than usual, but have checked her breathing and it seems fine. she says her chest hurts but i think thats more to do with thwe force of the coughing than her chest iyswim.

OP posts:
lovecamping · 29/09/2008 22:55

i've no idea then misdee, so sorry 4 you and dd.

hope you manage to get some rest tonight and that yr dd feels betters some.

avenanap · 29/09/2008 22:56

Sounds like bronchitis, the coughing bouts and tight chest give it away, however, it's similar to asthma. Does she still have a fever?

A wet flannel on her radiator should help to put some moisture back in the room (you have to turn it on though).

misdee · 29/09/2008 22:58

she hasnt had a temperature. came out of school coughing. she had lacrosse today so my first thought was exercise-induced asthma. but am not sure.

i hate winter. always means breathing issues.

OP posts:
avenanap · 29/09/2008 23:02

You can get a cough with an asthma attack without the wheeze. It it a constant cough? Is she able to catch her breath?

misdee · 29/09/2008 23:05

she never wheezes until last minutes with an asthma attack. am well known on here for saying that not all asthmatics wheeze

she is asleep now, breathing ok, no crackly, no recessing in chest, she looks ok. colour is still good.

will try rubbing more vicks on her chest and neck and see if that keeps her ok overnight.

Poor Misdee and dd, I am with you here also not feeling great

isn't it quiet at night?

Fwiw, ds (now 5) had a cough all last winter and they thought it was just asthma. He doesn;t wheeze either.

avenanap · 29/09/2008 23:10

I'd pop a wet flannel on or a bowl of water under the radiator to put some moisture in the air for her aswell.

Poor ds2 kerrymum. I'd do the same.

I hope they are feeling better soon.

misdee · 29/09/2008 23:20

OP posts:
Pushpinia · 29/09/2008 23:21

I hope you get some rest - both of you.

On another thread they were recommending a bowl of steaming water in the room (obv. out of reach of the child), maybe with some eucalyptus oil/Vicks dissolved in it.

I've had a terrible cough this week and I know inhaling steam really helped.
