oops i still had my tarpaulin on

phdlife · 27/09/2008 21:12

that's what everyone said when ds had it recently.

your poor lo, sympathies

RubySlippers · 27/09/2008 21:12

yes - slap it on

make sure he gets plenty of nappy off time as well

if it reallu isn't shifting, then get canestan

NorbertDentressangle · 27/09/2008 21:12

Eddie, me old mucker!

Metanium certainly sorted out DS's really bad nappy rash a few years ago (not sure if theres anything better on the market now though?).

Metanium and as much bare-bottom time as you can manage.

madamy · 27/09/2008 21:12

It is in our house! It's the only thing that helps ds when his is bad - have tried all sorts of other creams but metanium wins easily.

msdisillusioned · 27/09/2008 21:13

Fantastic stuff - works a treat.

spicemonster · 27/09/2008 21:14

It's worked brilliantly for my DS except when he got thrush and then it was Canestan but I'd try metanium first. Don't buy any of that bepanthan stuff - it's rubbish.

TheProvincialLady · 27/09/2008 21:14

Oh bless him We stopped using metanium, sudacrem etc when we were recommended a lentilly substance called soothing cream or something, made by Nature Babies. It smells lovely and is indeed very soothing. We also use a barrier called petroleum free jelly, which is made from all natural ingredients. We got both from our health food shop but you can get them online too. They cured DS of his nappy rash, which wasn't so much terrible as just really, really persistant.

I have heard other people say that their DC get resistant to one sort of cream and they have to rotate.

dilbertina · 27/09/2008 21:15

Yes it's top. I find less is more though...Really thin layer so skin can still breath is best IMO. If it doesn't improve quick get him down gp though....

PestoMonster · 27/09/2008 21:16

Leave nappy off, paint the sore bits with egg white, repeat as necessary

This tip came from my Health Visitor who told me they were not officially allowed to recommend it any more, what with salmonella scares etc

However, it works.

Better than any chemicals.

Good luck

Tutter · 27/09/2008 21:16

ok thanks

v thin layer then, yes?

why down the docs if it doesn't clear up??

ds1 only had it once - think it cleared up in a day or two. ds2 more sensitive skin-wise - he's cutting molars atm so is really struggling

charchargabor · 27/09/2008 21:17

I have found it best for all of DD's rashes except one which needed Timodene from GP. Agree with dilbertina that less is more.

noonki · 27/09/2008 21:19

bepanthen is by far the best I have come across and is much easier to apply than metanium

  • before bed put LOADS on then have bare bum for as long as you dare!

also apparently don't use unless necessary and change nappies a bit mroe regularly than normal

good luck

Certianly worked great for dd when she was wee. The other thing I can think of although can't remember what it's called (pg brain) is like a spray on second skin stuff which you can get over the counter from chemist - I'll try and remember to ask dh, he's a paeds surgeon currently doing neonatal care and they use something like it in the hospital for really bad nappy rash.

greenandpleasant · 27/09/2008 21:36

bepanthan fave in our house as ds had reaction to metanium which made rash worse - you have made me remember the shaking in pain bit now - poor wee things . so just to bear in mind that if metanium doesn't work pronto then stop using it! (which I didn't as he was brand new at the time and I didn't realise and rash got to be badly broken skin - ow ow ow)

YumeeMumee · 27/09/2008 21:39

Another vote for Bepanthen...it always works for DS. It is also much easier to apply than metanium....and doesn't stain!

But also agree that as much bare bum time as poss is realy the best solution.

Tutter · 28/09/2008 09:16

twiga - if you can ask your dh what the second skin stuff is called that would be great

ds2's skin is, in general, better this morning, but there are two large areas where the top layers of skin have come off - the metanium won't stick there and it looks very sore

Pheebe · 28/09/2008 12:21

E45 do one also that is working great for our ds who has a tendency towards excema also. It sticks to broken and wet skin

Twiga · 28/09/2008 22:44

Tutter, I will do - will try and post tom lunch time with the info you need - he's doing a night shift just now and must be hectic as not answering the phone.

DANCESwithLordPottingtonSmythe · 28/09/2008 22:48

Metanium worked brilliantly for both my dc. DS has eczema (mild) and generally sensitive skin. Bepanthen BURNT his bottom (skin blistered up) I really cannot recommend it. Horrible stuff.

plus3 · 28/09/2008 22:51

Bepanthen is much better than metaniun, clears DD nappy rash very quickly - She seems to get it whenever she is teething. Try and get as much air to the skin as possible - the longer without a nappy the better!!

ScottishMummy · 28/09/2008 23:07

cannestan thrush cream from chemist worked for my baby red mottled botty.so sore lo levitted at changing

i used an assortment eg bepanthen, cannestan, zinc and castor oil

Tutter · 29/09/2008 07:40

thanks all

metanium has done the trick - it's pretty much cleared up

thanks twiga but hopefully i won't need the second skin stuff now

DANCESwithLordPottingtonSmythe · 29/09/2008 07:41

SEE! SEE! Metanium does the trick
