My DD2 has been refered to hospital for a stigmatism and long sighted, we have been waiting 2 months and now have a letter with list of hospitals to call for an appointment. I spent 30 mins today trying to book an appointment but no luck
I have been sent a pic, when youn can clearly see one red and one white eye. Im getting alittke worried. Has anyone had this and things been okay??

makes me wish i had choosen watford now instead of Lister!

Not that im totally ignorant wheres the lister? Im sure ive heard of it, Isnt that a good one? see how you get on you may get someone nice, if youre unhappy you can always ask to change, just make out its more convenient or something! Do you know who the consultant is there? Just getting going and making sure something is getting done is the main thing first, then you can take a breath and see how you want things to progress.

I must admit i was pleasantly surprised by watford, i was just expecting it to be awful, it is a dirty dump but the people there are great.

Lisa - I'm probably stating the obvious but take both pix with you when you see the GP tomorrow and if they don't act on it immediately take her to the walk in eye clinic at the Moorfields.

I know it's a bit of trek but in this instance potentially worth it. My DD had a photo exactly like this and I had it checked out and in the event it was all OK, but the consultant said that this was exactly the sort of image that should prompt further investigation.

Good luck.

pennies: wheres moorfields?

that would be cheaper and quicker than going private wouldt it? or is moorfields private?

missorinoco · 10/09/2008 19:51

your gp sounds sensible. if he is any doubt he will (hopefully) chat with the opthalmologists. if not, turn up at the nearest eye casualty.

good luck

Pennies · 10/09/2008 19:59

No Moorfields is not private, so yes it would be cheaper and they certainly know their eyes.

misdee · 10/09/2008 20:01

i would go to moorfields lisa, and get her seen there rather than faff about with GP and clinics this end.

wehaveallbeenthere · 10/09/2008 20:04

There was a recent writeup about this in MSNhealth this past couple weeks. A woman saw a photo of a friends child (they had been emailing each other for some time) and brought it to her attention to have the child checked out for a rare eye cancer. The child did have it.
I would go ahead and just have it checked as the chances are that it is nothing but some chance reflection. Better safe than sorry though.

lisad123 · 10/09/2008 21:48

i think would rather just go private because if we find out it is the worse case, we can stay under private but if NHS start us off we cant.

I went straight to the opticians in the Howard Centre (WGC),asked for a check of dd's eyes when I had a picture exactly the same.
They were fantastic with dd and referred her to a specialist immediately who practices at the QE2.
Get it checked-may be nothing but it will get you an instant referral.
DR referred to was a Mr.Coker.

Pigstyle · 10/09/2008 22:17

You will need a referral either way and the opticians can refer you privately....same guy-Mr.Coker who has private pateints at Pinehill in Hitchin.

kiltycoldbum · 10/09/2008 22:18

its a shame its taking so long, i went to gp in watford for referral and had hospital appt in just over a week! you must do whatever you feel is the best and makes you feel comfortable (if thats not a bad choice of word). There are some good hospitals etc round here, not too sure where you are but i think you're near me almost! I hope all goes well, i'll keep an eye on the post to see how you are

smartiejake · 10/09/2008 22:51

She was too young to be seen at the opticians?
What rubbish! My dds have been seen regularly by an optician since they were 6 months old.

Definitely take her to Moorfields- my mum who has a rare disease that can affect her eyes has been there recently- it's just brilliant. They have an eye A & E- just walk in and get her checked.

RandomIdiot · 10/09/2008 23:29

Smartie. I don't think she is too young to be seen by an optician per se.

I think she is too young for the optician to do the necessary tests for Rb in a regular opticians consulting room. I predicted this in my post at 22:28 yesterday (I was DNA then).

I don't want to go into details lisaD's DD will not be doing an eye test. The tests that will be required require the spacilist equipment that many "high street" opticians do not carry.

lisad123 · 11/09/2008 09:52

hi lisa, hope you got on alright, will keep peeking in to see if there's any news

smartiejake · 11/09/2008 13:10

Any news Lisa?

lisad123 · 11/09/2008 14:11

sorry mad morning here. Yep GP said it all seems ok from his point of view but her squint is getting worse (another sign ) so have been referred to Pinehill, to see MR Coker. Should be seen within a week, so hopefully will be sorted then. They will also look at her eyesight while we are there, rather than the 4 month wait with NHS, and all covered by DH private health care.
Feeling a little better today, but not sure I will be completely happy till she is seen next week.

cthea · 11/09/2008 16:39

I hope next week's appt will put your mind at rest. Good luck.
