Any doctors around? I'm worried my 4 year old may have diabetes.

I have noticed for some time - at least 4 weeks that my 4 yr old is ecessively thirsty. By excessively I mean that for brfeakfast =she will gulp down 2 cups of water, by mid morning ish another 2, lunchtime another 2 etc. In betgween she always accepts if offere4d a drink and by the time she asks ( if not offered in between the breakfast and mid monring say) she actually cries for a drink on first asking - for e.g. she'll suddeenly cry/comp=lain "mummy i'm so thirsty i need a drink now" - and so she does as she'll drink it all. Surely this can't be normal?

I gazve her hot sweet herbal tea just now for the first time before bed as she wanted somthing hot and to my surpirse she drained the cup drinking it in big gulps after sayhing she was v tghirsty.

No other signs of anything at all being wrong although today she vomited and has a slight temperature. I thnk this is totally unrelated however as the excessive thirst started 4 weeks ago.

Does anyone have any ideas as tgo what it may be ? Diabetes?

I would echo others and say GP tomorrow morning with a wee sample.

Diabetes can quite easily be ruled in or out with some simple tests.

I just wanted to add that phoning NHS direct or your out of hours GP service might be a good idea. They can ask you some questions and hopefully put your mind at rest at least for this evening - but if they feel your daughter needs to be seen tonight - they will tell you.
Is so hard when they are ill and you don't know why...hope all works out in the end.

NHS Direct were who I called and they advised me to take my DD2 in. Sadly she was misdiagnosed by 2 GPs prior to this, neither of whom tested her blood or urine.

Sadly Type One is on the increase in young children.

DD2 is fine now by the way, she is doing brilliantly and has an insulin pump which has made control much easier.

Thinking of you both, fingers crossed everything will be ok.

I would like to echo what the others say - nhs direct tonight, definitely gp's first thing (I actually wish I'd gone to a&e as my gp couldn't fit me in until 4pm - either that or I should have pushed for an earlier appointment). Diabetes can present quickly, it is known as 'the shock diagnosis', I read somewhere.

My son has diabetes and has recently been given an insulin pump which has changed our lives.

... my son had exactly the same symptoms as your daughter. Excessive thirst, lots of weeing, wet beds for the first time ever, stomach pains, weight loss, tiredness, crankiness, pear drops smell on his breath. As I said ^ I wish with hindsight that I'd taken him in sooner.

If it is diabetes then as soon as treatment starts you will start to get your little girl back. x

Dd has a urine infection! Of all things! It just shows how weirdly some things can present in childrne as I am a veteran of urine infections having suffered them for 11 years myself beofre an op corrected them at age 11 and also having dealt with them before in other childrne of mine. never before however have I seen excesive thirst or loss of appetite or vomiting or sotmach ache although i understand that all are perfectly standard markers of a urine infection.

We were discharged wiht antibiotics and a referral to a urologist - quite why we need that i don't know as it is only a first occurance and I had thought that referrals took place after 2 or 3 urine infections. I don't mind dd having non invasive follow up tests but don't want her to undergo anythinig invasive or overly painful after just one infection.

Much releived and settle dthis afternoon now . She is sleeping - still drking and vomiting but more settled. thanks everyone
