Any idea what this could be on my DS’s back

He says it doesn’t itch, it doesn’t hurt, it just feels a bit weird.

It’s nowhere else, just this line of raised spots, a couple of inches long right in the middle of his back.

Any idea what this could be on my DS’s back

Bite mark?

HundredYearOldMan · 30/01/2026 07:45

Shingles

Soontobe60 · 30/01/2026 07:46

Flea bites. Do you have a dog or cat?

Eminybob · 30/01/2026 08:05

My first thought was shingles but he’s not unwell. I remember being really poorly with shingles.

No pets.

Bed bugs? But we are clean!

I think you can get shingles mildly

tirednessbecomesme · 30/01/2026 08:34

I was also going to say flea bites - has he been around anyone else with a pet even if you don’t have them?

LittleNoosh · 30/01/2026 08:39

DS had shingles and at the start it was fine, no pain. It became sensitive but he felt fine all the way through. So I wouldn’t automatically rule it out just be use your DC is well in themselves.

Have you chekced they don’t have a bag strap or something similar that rubs there? DS has a tendency to getting marks where his heavy rucksack strap rubs from being thrown on and off.

Eminybob · 30/01/2026 08:58

He’s not been anywhere apart from school this week. Oh Beavers on Tuesday but there are no animals there.
Could be his book bag, although I tend to be the one carrying that 🙄
Will see how he goes over the weekend and if it gets any worse or he gets ill I’ll give the GP a call.

It does look a bit like shingles, if it is shingles he needs to be seen and given antivirals quickly, they only work if taken soon after the breakout.

Eminybob · 30/01/2026 10:00

Is shingles not just for older people then? I don’t think I’ve heard of children getting it.
He had chicken pox as a baby.

Another vote for shingles. You can get them at any age without feeling ill.

0ddsocks · 30/01/2026 11:08

My DD got shingles at 2 1/2. I thought it was mainly older people too. Doctor said the younger they are the less they tend to suffer and for my DD it was no more than like a bad cold.

(and via it she gave my newborn chicken pox so if you have any other kids be aware of this)

PudgeJudy · 30/01/2026 11:10

I’m guessing shingles too.

shannie · 30/01/2026 11:49

Could it be scabies ? There’s lots of it about

PeoniesAreMyFavouriteFlowers · 30/01/2026 11:52

FYI bed bugs is nothing to do with whether you are clean or not.

Waitingformychinesetakeaway · 30/01/2026 14:53

If you’ve had chicken pox then you can develop shingles, at any age. I wasn’t poorly with mine as I remember randomly finding the rash when I was at work.

TomatoSandwiches · 30/01/2026 15:06

Looks more like scabies to me and yes children can and do get shingles as well.

Eminybob · 30/01/2026 17:03

Thanks. Is it a drs visit then do you think?

0ddsocks · 30/01/2026 17:36

How old is he?

Peabody25 · 30/01/2026 17:38

Probably worth a doctors visit for some antivirals. DS12 had shingles before Christmas and the gp said to get antivirals into them as soon as the first few spots appear. They de make him feel under the weather for a few days, mainly just lack of energy which carried on for a few weeks, and some tummy and headaches for a few days

Springup24 · 30/01/2026 18:07

You can go to a chemist rather than waiting for a GP as they can also give you anti virals. You have to be quick though, as they are most effective if started within the first few hours. My daughter had shingles, and until then I also thought it was just elderly people!

Theonlywayicanloveyou · 30/01/2026 18:09

Scabies

Springup24 · 30/01/2026 18:09

It doesn't look quite like her shingles did though. But worth asking the pharmacist.

shannie · 30/01/2026 18:23

I really do think scabies which is better treated asap before it goes through the house.

Waitingformychinesetakeaway · 30/01/2026 18:55

Scabies doesn’t tend to start in the middle of the back.
