Any idea what this could be on my DS’s back

He says it doesn’t itch, it doesn’t hurt, it just feels a bit weird.

It’s nowhere else, just this line of raised spots, a couple of inches long right in the middle of his back.

Any idea what this could be on my DS’s back

I’d say shingles too. My 7 year old had it before Christmas.
definitely take to the pharmacy and see what they say

My first thought was scabies

Could be worth getting a pharmacist to look tomorrow

Is shingles not just for older people then? I don’t think I’ve heard of children getting it.
He had chicken pox as a baby.

You have to have had Chicken Pox in order to develop shingles. My teen had it early last year and it did start off looking quite similar. I initially thought it was bed bug bites as we’d stayed in a hotel. The Pharmacy weren’t sure so referred us to the GP who said shingles straight away.

Lifeisapeach · 30/01/2026 20:05

I’d say scabies as looks more like burrows rather than fluid filled shingles.

spiderlight · 30/01/2026 21:29

My DS had shingles at 9 and wasn't unwell at all. He said it just tingled a bit. It looked very much like that. (He had chicken pox incredibly mildly as well, when he was 6 - about ten spots, only one of which itched).

Eminybob · 30/01/2026 21:36

He’s 7. His chicken pox were pretty mild too.

I guess the consensus is shingles. I’ll pop to the pharmacy tomorrow. Thank you

Shingles. My daughter had it when she was 4.

My first thought was shingles but he’s not unwell. I remember being really poorly with shingles.

No pets.

Bed bugs? But we are clean!

You dont get bed bugs because you are dirty!!

My DS had marks like this last summer. I took a picture and sent it to the GP, she said it’s definitely shingles. He wasn’t unwell at all. She said the rash is the last symptom to come out and if he isn’t getting unwell there is little point in giving them antiviral medication. The only thing she said was not to let him come in to contact with anyone with suppressed immunity - like anyone having chemo.

LemaxObsessive · 30/01/2026 22:56

Don’t send him to school, whatever you do! Highly, highly contagious and there could be family members of kids at school with weakened immune systems. We have a child with Leukaemia at DD’s school and her mum has been told that Shingles especially would be extremely dangerous for her, possibly life threatening

Don’t take him with you!!!!!

So is there any point going to the pharmacy? If he’s not ill and not likely to get ill should I just leave the rash to clear up by itself? (whilst avoiding the immunosuppressed)

I would do an e-consult on Monday and have a doctor look at it (you can add photos) they will say whether that’s Shingles or not.

This is it this morning. It hasn’t spread but does look redder

I'd still get it checked. We were told by the GP that it's only contagious if you come into contact with the liquid from the blisters and just to keep it covered - he sent DS straight back to school, as it was only on his back and side under his clothes and it wasn't bothering him.

Eminybob · 31/01/2026 15:30

Pharmacist says it’s bites 🤷🏻‍♀️

Perhaps a bug/insect got caught under his top, did they give you any clues as to what kind of bite?

No she didn't, I didn’t think to ask I was just relieved it was wasn’t anything to worry about.

My son had shingles, didn't know until we went to the drs about something else and he saw the rash. He felt fine.

TheKateColumbo · 02/02/2026 13:57

How is the rash now? It looks even more like my son’s shingles in the second picture.

Eminybob · 02/02/2026 14:45

it was looking a bit more red and raised today, but no more spots. The pharmacist said it could take a week to go. She was adamant it wasn’t shingles due to the placing. It is pretty much smack bang in the middle of his back and crosses the 2 sides which she said doesn’t happen with shingles.

We've had every skin condition going in our house, including shingles. I'd say bites.
Do you have a cat?

schmalex · 02/02/2026 14:49

I'd pop into a pharmacy and show the photo to them.

FcukBreastCancer · 02/02/2026 14:51

Pharmacist right, shingles cant cross midline and had certain patterns along nerves

BurntBroccoli · 02/02/2026 14:52

It looks like scabies… Often appear in a line as the mites travel across the skin.

Eurax will help the itching but you may need to see your GP.
