Doctor gaslighting my child or he is right

MuteDS · 07/01/2026 18:02

My beautiful child 7 years old had Scarlet fever, RSV, flu A and other viruses back to back. He was coughing non stop and needed hospital and help with breathing anyways after all the latter subsided. He occasionally feels little vomit come to his mouth when lying down or just random. It happened 3 times so far the little vomit come to his mouth. I contacted his gastroenterologist Consultant because he is under them for chronic constipation and this is the consultant reply:
Mild post-viral regurgitation is common

i have big family and I asked around and everyone seems puzzled and say they never experienced it. Anyone here have similar thing happened to them ? Is it actually common to regurgitate after viral infection. I am actually losing my mind worrying he developed another chronic problem pls advise

I would say that a fatty/rich/fried food diet is exactly what your child doesn’t need right now.

MuteDS · 09/01/2026 22:27

Yes I agree. He has been eating bland food but we have not been out for a while due to their viruses. We actually didn’t choose bad food. He ate this 💔 anyways we won’t go out anymore till he recover thank you for the advice

It’s definitely back . He is pooing every second day but not impacted. His gut slowed down after all these viruses.
@Hotchocolateandmarsh did you child get heartburn or regurgitation? And what caused it for your child. Thank you for replying ❤️

My child was having issues with stomach pain and bloated tummies / would sometimes say there were full after a small amount of food. I was struggling to get them to eat a normal portion.

We tried gaviscon but actually we worked out it was a food allergy and a bit of anxiety.

tantrummingterrors · 09/01/2026 22:35

Post viral lactose intolerance is a thing. Try a very plain, low/no dairy diet for a month. Helped us post viral.

NiceCupOfChai · 09/01/2026 22:38

He’s had four episodes of mild reflux. The consultant has reassured you. just watch and wait and give it a bit of time to settle. You saying you send lots of emails to the consultant and your (mis)use of emotive
language suggests health anxiety. Maybe book an appointment to discuss your anxiety.

He started eating dairy just 6 months ago he is a CMPA child and had egg allergy so maybe 🥲 Ergh I cannot go through the dairy ladder route and all that crap. It took too long to get him to this point 🥹

I don’t know why everyone assume I have anxiety. I don’t. My child suffered a lot so I take every symptom seriously. I just want to catch everything early so it doesn’t become chronic.

I see someone has already suggest transient post viral lactose intolerance- this is really common, just scale back on dairy, fatty food and make sure he’s getting plenty of fruits and veggies and protein.

Please stop stalker emailing the consultant - they’ve given you a perfectly viable explanation. Short of putting your son through a likely unnecessary endoscopy, there’s not a lot else to do right now except watch and wait to see if this is post-viral and clears up with time.

Why is telling someone a symptom they are experiencing is common 'gaslighting'? He's a consultant gastro surgeon. Why would he say it's common if it wasn't?

I hardly think your family who are presumably not specialist consultants know more about the subject than he does.

Surely you should just accept the fact and be reassured. I'm glad he's getting better.

The meal you posted looks quite heavy. Tasty of course, though bread cooked with oil, chips, meat with spices. Might be quite harsh on his stomach? But I guess if he seems to be fine with it then that's a good sign.

Anyahyacinth · 09/01/2026 22:46

What was the treatment suggestion OP ..because even if it is simple acid reflux that's painful ...have you been given child friendly medicine to treat that ?

No treatment or advice given except this reply to every email

No he wasn’t well after that meal. He had meal regurgitation. Anyways we went go out anymore just home cooked bland food till he recover !
and it was chicken not red meat! It was plain greek bread. The only thing oily was the chips. He only had quarter of the bread !

Ah yeah that's a good idea. I would've thought it was a bit heavy for someone with gastric issues. I didn't say it was red meat. Chicken is meat.

Plain rice and toast, milk and bananas and stuff might help. Or kefir?

Hope he's better soon x

I have the same symptoms. Things that tend to cause it are fatty foods, big meals (I have small meals now and snacks instead), squash, tomatoes and spicy foods. As a child I would take tums after my meal and sit still and read a book or watch tv for half an hour so my food could settle. Having a lot to drink during a meal seems to make it worse too so I eat before or after but not during.

CountryGirlInTheCity · 09/01/2026 23:02

OP, my DS had a really nasty bout of scarlet fever when he was 6 (years ago, he’s an adult now) and for six months after he’d recovered from the scarlet fever he had gastrointestinal issues. Not regurgitation but cramps, diarrhoea and so on. We were just about to start investigating coeliac etc when it stopped. Nothing ever since. I think it’s quite common actually. I’d try not to worry.

Is this your whole life or just after viral infection? What caused yours?

In 2017, I had a series of viruses and a chest infection. I'm very asthmatic and was ill as a child. I coughed phlegm every morning for nearly 2 years and I had a tendency to gag and taste sick for a while too. I suspect this is the kind of thing the GP was talking about. Hope he feels better soon

And this

But also this poor person has had an awful time with a child who has had a number of fairly nasty illnesses one after another so a level of anxiousness about their health is perfectly understand. Perhaps we could offer understanding, support or reassurance instead of piling on her phrasing? Or just scroll on by if you’re not able to do that?

Nezukokamado · 09/01/2026 23:19

I would watch it for a little while
Maybe the doctor is right

But if it continues, probe further

beAsensible1 · 09/01/2026 23:22

I can understand being worried OP especially if this isn’t something you’ve experienced and him being quite ill a few times and the allergies. It’s obviously got you on high alert for symptoms.

as other have said small portions, sitting down to eat and taking a bit of time to digest, bland foods. You could keep a little food diary. If it’s still on going at the end of the month you could follow up.

or ask for a timeline.

Yes, viruses can affect gi tissues causing inflammation and nerve damage, affecting motility and weakening the lower oesophageal spincter, the ring of muscle at the top of the stomach that stops food coming up into the oesophagus. Ordinary people wouldnt necessarily know this.
I had an ordinary flu like virus in 2016 and when i started eating again i had digestive issues for the first time in my life (age 45). I had reflux and burping and yes food would come up. I also had some gastroparesis, so my stomach felt full after a small amount of food and wasnt moving through as quickly as previous. No one i knew had ever heard of this happening due to a virus. I was referred by gp to gastroenterologist. Neither the gp nor the gastro team seemed interested in my view that the virus had caused my symptoms. They were quite dismissive of that idea. Yet that fitted my experience. They prescribed proton pump inhibitors for a time. In 2016, there wasnt a great deal about this on the internet but that changed as covid caused many to be left with postviral GI issues. Suddenly in 2021, i was hearing, yes it was well known now that a virus can damage the gut. I also got covid in 2021 and was worried my reflux symptoms might return but they didnt.

It took a while for me to recover from my episode in 2016, maybe 10 months. I was only on proton pump inhibitor for 4 weeks then i weaned myself off it as it prevents absorption of vitamins and minerals. I took vitamin d, because deficiency in vitamin d can cause weakness of tthe lower oseophageal sphincter. I ate a lot of ginger and drank ginger tea and a lot of warm water to ease my symptoms. I had to eat smaller meals and definitely avoid fatty or spicy foods. My appetite was poor for a time. There was no magic miracle cure, i just had to give my body a chance to heal. . A low sugar diet helps to reduce inflammation.
I hope your child will recover soon.

Elektra1 · 10/01/2026 07:32

Try the Gaviscon for kids. Heartburn is fairly normal

PurpleThistle7 · 10/01/2026 07:37

My daughter had post viral gut inflammation after a nom symptomatic bout of Covid. Took about 4 months for her to eat a normal meal. Gaviscon, probiotics and a very simple diet
