Doctor gaslighting my child or he is right

MuteDS · 07/01/2026 18:02

My beautiful child 7 years old had Scarlet fever, RSV, flu A and other viruses back to back. He was coughing non stop and needed hospital and help with breathing anyways after all the latter subsided. He occasionally feels little vomit come to his mouth when lying down or just random. It happened 3 times so far the little vomit come to his mouth. I contacted his gastroenterologist Consultant because he is under them for chronic constipation and this is the consultant reply:
Mild post-viral regurgitation is common

i have big family and I asked around and everyone seems puzzled and say they never experienced it. Anyone here have similar thing happened to them ? Is it actually common to regurgitate after viral infection. I am actually losing my mind worrying he developed another chronic problem pls advise

There is absolutely nothing in your post to support your suggestion that the doctor was gaslighting you or your child.
gaslighting
the practice of psychologically manipulating someone into questioning their own sanity, memory, or powers of reasoning:

Do you mean that you think the Dr isn’t taking the symptoms seriously enough?

From the briefest of googling, post-viral gastrointestinal regurgitation is a thing.

Yes I think I said it wrongly. I was hoping for him to be seen and send tons of email and each time he email back that it’s normal normal and I am just really worried

Gaslighting?

Either you don't actually know what that means or you seriously need to reevaluate the way you think.

Wolfiefan · 07/01/2026 18:10

You send tons of emails? Maybe the issue is your anxiety?

This sounds like you ha every high anxiety .
Take Drs advice and seek further advice if symptoms continue and worse .
I do think at this present moment in time it sounds like you are overthinking and over analysing.

cestlavielife · 07/01/2026 18:34

The consultant has reassured you.
Relax and give your child time to recover.
This mild symptom is nothing to worry about.

FuzzyWolf · 07/01/2026 18:48

He’s not gaslighting you and his suggestion is a likely one.

FurForksSake · 07/01/2026 18:54

It sounds like mild reflux, if it continues he might need some medication for a few months for it to settle. My ds had similar and was given medication when it didn’t settle. He’d throw up at night and was complaining of bile in his mouth.

hopefully it will pass, prop him up a little at night.

And this

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 07/01/2026 19:07

He’s right.

you don’t need to get help for your son’s mild reflux which, the doctor has reassured you on multiple occasions about, will get better by itself.

i do think you need to get help for your health anxiety.

Clutterbug2026 · 07/01/2026 19:08

Your child had mild reflux on 3 occasions and you sent his doctors lots of emails 🫣

MissAnthr0pe · 07/01/2026 19:10

Gaslighting?!

Calm down and give your child some Gaviscon if it persists.

I think the problem is that

  1. clearly the doctor thinks it's normal and so he doesn't need to spend time seeing him
  2. "seeing" your son won't tell them a thing about his digestive tract or acid production, that would take complicated tests and biopsies, which would be traumatic for your child. They aren't going to put him through that unless they think he is seriously ill, which there is no evidence he is. He is not experiencing anything usual (loads of people get slight acid reflux) so there is no need to make him suffer.
  3. get help with your health anxiety.

English clearly isn’t OP’s first language so why pick her up on that? Perhaps she meant ‘misleading’ rather than ‘gaslighting,’ either way, do you have a supportive response?

Yes I do thank you. It happened today again after we ate out and couldn’t finish his food. He usually a foodie 😭
so today fourth time. I think I’ll cut off mayo and fried stuff for a month till his stomach recovers

How is the constipation issue at the moment?

Hotchocolateandmarsh · 09/01/2026 22:20

I’m going to ignore the derail OP

I would try some gaviscon, the GP had prescribed this for my child the same age. See if that helps settle. Also weigh them and keep an eye on their weight. If it starts decreasing then it’s facts to go back to the GP with.

Try some more bland feed for a few days to the stomach lining chance to recover after all the illnesses.

MuteDS · 09/01/2026 22:21

MILLYmo0se · 09/01/2026 22:18

How is the constipation issue at the moment?

It’s definitely back . He is pooing every second day but not impacted. His gut slowed down after all these viruses.
@Hotchocolateandmarsh did you child get heartburn or regurgitation? And what caused it for your child. Thank you for replying ❤️
