I've noticed a little new mole on my sons scalp a fee months ago. Checked it by cho who said nothing worrying but keep an eye if it's growing. I have not worried. Now, about 4 months later, I noticed it grew quite a bit. Not quite doubled in size but grew very noticeably.

This is roughly the change , would it worry you?

The edges look uneven to me too.

I agree it's something but you're 100% right to be getting a 2nd opinion.

I am just trying to find some reassurance it in it still. It wouldn't be much of a 2nd opinion as I just found out it is going to be the same consultant that assessed the photos under nhs (I am guessing we only have one paediatric dermatologist in the region) but I'd be more comfortable with an in person review

I'm not medically qualified, but I wouldn't be worried about it at all. It looks really normal to me! Hope you get some reassurance soon though x

I have had melanoma (very early stage) and I agree I wouid most definitely be getting this checked out, fingers crossed you’ll have some answers soon as the waiting is awful even as an adult let alone for a child. It’s the change in colour and size that would concern me the most BUT I highly doubt that it’s a melanoma given his extremely young age, probably just an ugly duckling mole. Is there a history in your family of skin cancer? Has he had much sun on his head?

Either way I think you should push to get it removed as benign moles that are unusual looking are more likely to turn cancerous later in life.

Oh I see, yes that does often happen that Drs do both private and NHS work so their services end up overlapping especially if their is a lack of them in your area as you say. But I hope you can get some more clarity and ressurance with it being a face to face appt. Let us know how it goes.

I would like that too. And I am still very worried about it.No skin cancer in the family (yet at least), I had an unusual mole removed but low suspicion for melanoma, most likely just atypical, still waiting on histology results. it had been 9 weeks already though. But even my mole didnt look as bad as my child's. I wish I could have had an in person review already for my son.

My mum has a very similar looking mole on her head. She was referred and they said it was nothing to worry about. I cant remember the name of it, but it was basically some sort of cyst type thing. It grew very suddenly as well.

Thank you all, I actually had another look at the mole yesterday and when brushing the hair away the darkest part of it (was about 1-2mm) came off like a dry scab. Underneath was no blood but sort of a tiniest raw kind of skin/flesh like 0.5mm area. This really worried me but overall the mole looks much more even now. I am wondering whether he could have scratched the mole on something - he did bump his head above the ear (in the region of the mole) on the sharp corner of a dresser about a month ago, maybe it traumatised it. Who knows. I am going to check it again in a week to see whether any further changes.
