Would this growing mole worry you?

I've noticed a little new mole on my sons scalp a fee months ago. Checked it by cho who said nothing worrying but keep an eye if it's growing. I have not worried. Now, about 4 months later, I noticed it grew quite a bit. Not quite doubled in size but grew very noticeably.

This is roughly the change , would it worry you?

The edges look uneven to me too.

Just get it checked op - if the GP has any concerns they’ll refer to dermatology. If it helps put your mind at ease I’ve had moles which have changed checked, and they were fine x

I am. I am taking him in a weeks time - they refused an urgent appointment. But I am just starting to being really worried and if this needs to then go to biopsy we are talking about a month's or 1,5months wait and I am just finding this all unbearable. He is 3 year old and I thought this might warrant some urgency...

So the GP have cancelled my son's appointment. Yet to give them a call back to find out what's going on but in the meantime checked private dermatology appointments for kids in our area and the closest one is end of December.

you could try calling 111 and see if they have any advice if you are struggling to see the GP? Hope you manage to get sorted

Absolutely get it checked by a dermatologist if you’re concerned- the chances are it’s fine though.
My 9 year old had a dodgy looking mole recently (crusty, changed colour, had an indent in the middle etc) it took around 6 weeks from gp appointment to dermatologist giving the all clear (they think he must have knocked it on something) - I worried so so much in that time so get how you’re feeling, it really is an awful worry and you’re not going to be fully reassured until it’s been checked but the chances of it being bad are really really small in children so it’s probably just normal growth!

I wish I wasn't posting here but totally sh**ING myself. My sons mole was examined three times in November/ December/ January and deemed stable by a GP. Theb was told to check in 6 months time. I just noticed it got darker on one side, raised, firm and either dry or crusty. Sent it all to GP as a e-consult. They said they will see him in 2 weeks. I know melanoma is children is vanishingly rare but I am so worried and thought the changes should prompt q quicker review? I am so scared. He is my only child. He is only 3.

The image is slightly high contrast so doesn't look quite as dramatic but I can see the specs in it and it definitely got much darker than it was just 1 month ago.

Do you mean the GP will see him in 2 weeks or have they referred him to derm already? If the latter that's a 2 week wait pathway referral and it's as quick as they get for anything suspicious. It understandably feels frustrating as this worry has already been ongoing for months for you.

No, GP said they will examine the mole in 2 weeks time, there is no talk about referrals.

If it changes any more, or bleeds etc before that, keep chasing them for a sooner appt.

CigarettesAndChocolateMilk · 10/03/2026 18:26

Well I took him to a private GP who said that melanoma on children is extremely rare and he isn't too worried but it does need an urgent review because it meets the referral criteria. Asymmetrical, evolving... had already been under surveillance for some time. He can't refer to nhs. So options are a plastic surgeon in about 1 week time privately (as private derm waiting times 2 months) or wait for the gp appt in 2 weeks time. I feel scared and helpless.

I assume the appt with the plastic surgeon would be to remove it/biopsy? Is this an option for you financially?

Finally after pushing , the nhs GP now called me and properly revited the photos and agreed that it looks very concerning. The images have been sent off to dermatology triage. I just can't shake the feeling that my bot should have been referred back in October/ November where the mole started to grow. I really trusted my GP and didn't question his judgement at the checks we had, last being in January. I feel sick thinking my little boy might have melanoma and it had been growing for 10 months now.

You've done everything you could have done. It shouldn't have taken this much stress and worry or taken this long, your feelings are completely valid. Will derm contact you directly now?

Thank you. I know i tried to do my best but I feel so let down and so incredibly scared. The GP said they will either contact him directly if they would not want to see him or if they want face to face then we will recieve an appt letter. he said he would chase if he doesnt hear back by Monday

It's incredibly frustrating when you are so concerned and not getting anywhere, especially from the people who are meant to provide this service for that exact reason. It sounds like it's being taken onboard and seriously now, just chase again if you don't hear anything, never feel like you are being too pushy under these circumstances. I hope you hear further very soon.

Yes some, thank you. The hospital reviewed images and said it looks like a benign compound nevus. I am a bit uneasy still though as the GP didn't include detail how this had been changing for 10 months already. I have booked him in with a private dermatologist for face to face review but it's not until may.

I agree it's something but you're 100% right to be getting a 2nd opinion.
