Chapped lips, GP visit?

Itsthefinal · 28/09/2025 14:40

When do chapped lips require a GP visit? No matter what I use, DDs chapped lips don’t get any better. It’s been this way for about a year.

I apply Vaseline a few times a day and before bed but have used lanolin, aquaphor, aveeno and everything in between. No matter what I do they look like this ALL the time ☹️ she doesn’t pick at them or lick them (that I’ve noticed). They are driving me insane. They just peel off and start all over again..just not sure what more a GP could do.

My ds used to get terrible chapped lips. Lush’s Ultrabalm was a game changer.

PersephoneParlormaid · 28/09/2025 14:43

Does she suck her thumb? Does she eat a varied diet or take vitamins? Is she a mouth breather at night?

Itsthefinal · 28/09/2025 14:44

@PersephoneParlormaid not a thumb sucker, takes daily vitamins but could be a mouth breather, yes!

DD1 was like this.....until we realised she had a lanolin allergy, and all those lovely lip balms were actually making the problem worse!

Itsthefinal · 28/09/2025 15:01

@CointreauVersial yes I thought this and stopped all lanolin products, it’s slightly better with Vaseline but still not great.

As someone with a skin picking disorder myself I can’t even look at them 😬

I wouldn't use vaseline tbh, it's petroleum based and I find anything petroleum based makes my chapped lips far worse.

I use a beeswax based lip balm which works wonders.

Itsthefinal · 28/09/2025 15:03

@GenuineWorkOfFart interesting! Don’t think we’ve tried beeswax yet..

Could be a vitamin deficiency or an issue with wheat (amongst other things)

Thundertoast · 28/09/2025 15:03

How hydrated is she? Have you tried upping her water intake?

Itsthefinal · 28/09/2025 15:04

@Thundertoast she drinks absolutely loads, so I’m sure it’s not dehydration.

She did have a dairy allergy as a baby but worked through the milk ladder, so could be an intolerance. Just overwhelms me I’m not even sure where to start.

I agree with @GenuineWorkOfFart re vaseline.

I use Bepanthen, the nappy cream, and it works wonders for me.

MumofCrohnie · 28/09/2025 15:09

There were other symptoms, but in DD's chronically chapped lips were a sign of vitamin deficiencies caused by Crohn's disease.

Burts Bees is probably the easiest to find. They also do a night repair balm in a little pot which is amazing stuff!

Blueberry911 · 28/09/2025 15:55

Vasaline traps in the dryness, you have to use it after something hydrating, I believe

I second the Burts Bees night repair balm - really lovely.

LilyCandelabra · 28/09/2025 16:10

Just seconding what others have said about it possibly being a sign of an underlying condition. My brother had permanently chapped lips for years and was eventually diagnosed with coeliac disease.

TheFormidableMrsC · 28/09/2025 16:12

Vaseline is useless for this. You need something like O’Keefes which works miracles, even overnight.

Ketzele · 28/09/2025 16:19

That is a completely adorable picture of your dd, despite poor chapped mouth. I was going to make some helpful suggestions re balms, but actually I think GP visit is a good idea.

parietal · 28/09/2025 16:20

If it isn’t causing her pain or discomfort then I don’t think it needs a GP visit. Can’t you just ignore it?

WonderingWanda · 28/09/2025 16:24

I would stop putting anything on them. I find when I wear any kind of lipstick or balm I lick my lips more and they become more chapped.

Owly11 · 28/09/2025 16:30

I would stop putting anything on them for a month or so to see how they go. If she is having a reaction to anything that will get her back to baseline. Skin doesn’t need products and if you are sensitive to them it can cause problems.

DumpedByText · 28/09/2025 16:31

Vaseline is a waste of time, try Burts Bees or Tropic both very good.

Autumn1990 · 28/09/2025 16:32

its easy to make lip balm using coconut and beeswax as a base don’t use any essential oils though as I used a purchased lip balm with essential oils and it burnt the skin off my lips
Or try going a few rungs back on the milk ladder as see if that clears it up.

landlordhell · 28/09/2025 16:36

Coconut oil or olive oil dabbed on.

DarlingHoldMyHand · 28/09/2025 16:37

Have you tried Ameliorate lip treatment? You can get it off Amazon for about £7. I put it on my son whilst he slept so he wouldn't lick it off and it cleared up his chapped lips.

It really works. I bought it myself when I was on some medication which gave me incredibly dry lips.
