My 18 month old keeps reacting to sun lotion, we've used kids 50+ in nivea, tesco soleil, and lidl own brand but she gets a rash with each one. Don't want to buy an expensive one without doing some homework!

We used the La Roche Posay kids one and they didn’t react to that having reacted to some others. It might be different for your child though.

Cherrington · 18/06/2025 12:13

Might be best to do a patch test too before you slather a new cream all over. I know that could work out expensive. Would a pharmacist have a tester tube perhaps?
Or could friends give you a little dab of theirs? Maybe ask pharmacist for recommendations too.

One of mine reacts to the high factor suncreams, presumably because they contain more of the UV blocking chemicals, but is fine with factor 20 of any brand we’ve tried so we just use that now- this we discovered when we forgot the kids stuff once. High factor suncreams aren’t necessary most of the time anyway, applying it correctly according to the instructions is the most important thing and it’s too often overlooked.

Ultra sun sensitive

TeenLifeMum · 18/06/2025 12:28

Dd and I are allergic to salicylates and I have to check the ingredients every year as they change.

Green people and la Roche have been our favourites but this year I’ve got P20 (not all of them are salicylate free within the brand so I have to check. Dd is also allergic to coconut. Rest of family gets cheaper stuff 😂🙈

OnyourbarksGSG · 18/06/2025 12:30

In a huge huge fan of altruist. It was developed by dermatologists and is silky smooth, melts into the skin and none of the very sensitive gingers in my family have ever reacted to it badly. You can buy it on Amazon.

Sillybillypoopoomummy · 18/06/2025 12:33

aqua biore watery essence is the only one that DS does not react to, and it is lovely (although we assume not waterproof as the label is in korean!)

winnieanddaisy · 18/06/2025 15:02

My husband was allergic to suntan lotion and by process of elimination , we found that it was white, milky lotions he reacted to . He was much better with clear lotions.

CCLCECSC · 18/06/2025 15:05

We've had success with ultrasun and childs farm sensitive.

Myfridgeiscool · 18/06/2025 15:06

DD uses Altruist, get it in Sainsburys.
Others bring her out in a rash.

LavenderBlue19 · 18/06/2025 15:09

We use Ultrasun sensitive.

I've worked out I'm allergic to octocrylene. My son seems to react to any SPF 50, which is a pain - haven't worked out a common ingredient yet.

Seahorsesplendour · 18/06/2025 15:13

Also recommend altruist!!

Lavenderandbrown · 18/06/2025 15:19

Blue lizard sensitive skin from Australia. My fair haired son’s favorite

Most kids sunscreens are identical to other versions, they are just labeled differently. I have studied labels to death looking for safe products to me. Companies sell the same exact product in multiple packages.

I was able to find 2 of the ones you mentioned on the SkinSafe app. They both contain fragrance and benzoates which are common irritants. There are other possible contenders as well because you never know what the cause could be.

you will probably have the best luck with a mineral based, fragrance free suncream. The downside is they are harder to apply, but they are very effective and tend to be considered safer.

recommending a specific brand is difficult because I am not in the uk.

whatever you get, patch test first. Just apply a small dot and then wait 72 hours. I use my arm, but for a child I would probably do it other back.

OtterMummy2024 · 18/06/2025 18:30

I wear Ambre Solaire Sensitive for my rash-prone skin and Soltan Kids Sensitive for the baby. See if friends have some different brands you can patch test, as suggested :)

Sillybillypoopoomummy · 18/06/2025 18:47

Ambre Solaire, Soltan kids and Child's Farm literally burnt DS's skin (without the sun!)
Haven't tried Altruist though, so although it is not my thread thank you for the name!

Nannydoodles · 18/06/2025 18:55

Another one for Altruist! It’s really good, they do a face one too which is incredibly light. I have always reacted badly to other sunscreen, kids ones seem worse as do a lot of the sun sensitive ones.

healthyteeth · 18/06/2025 19:01

You could try ditching the chemical sunscreen and getting a mineral sunscreen.

Much gentler on skin. Try Jason or Green People Children.

Sillybillypoopoomummy · 18/06/2025 20:16

Interestingly Jason is a deodorant DS can tolerate (that and Everyman Jack), and I did not know they did sunscreen - ty

PragmaticIsh · 18/06/2025 20:19

My DD reacts to most suncream, but La Roche Posay for kids is absolutely fine. Any others she gets a limpy rash that lasts for about a week.

Wasywasydoodah · 18/06/2025 20:24

I second mineral sunscreen. Much less likely to cause a rash. We use suntribe. My son hasn’t had a rash since swapping (and we tried lots of the expensive chemical ones: sunsense, ultrasun etc etc)

Youre welcome:)

Many people don’t know about how much more gentle mineral sunscreen is (& how much safer it is for reef and ocean too).

This looks a good brand too at Holland and Barrett

IwantKandixxx · 19/06/2025 20:48

Altruist definitely!
Recommended to us years ago by my daughter's Dermatologist at St Thomas Hospital London. We all use it now. Get mine from Amazon. Cheaper than most high street brands
